Tracfone, which is a company based in Mexico, is very shaky at best. After almost a year of trying them out, we're finally throwing in the towel and giving another pay-as-you-go company (Virgin Mobile) a try. At least the phones with Virgin Mobile aren't models from 5 years ago. But the problem(s) we've had with Tracfone, aside from trying to communicate with their phone reps who hardly speak English, is unorganization, bad tech suppport, and the product quality itself. Half the time we got charged double minutes because the phone was supposedly out of the area and in 'roaming mode,' when it actually wasn't. It took months for them to send me a simple battery charger to replace a defective one. Finally the last straw was my wife's phone suddenly went inactive - couldn't make any calls whatsoever. When I called to find out why, they could give no explanation, but said she would have to reactivate and start with a new phone number (this would be the third new number for her). Bye-bye Tracfone - it hasn't been fun.

5 out of 5 stars Very happy with my TracFone Service!.......2002-01-12

I purchased a TracFone a few months ago; I don't use a wireless phone much, but didn't want to be without a phone in case of emergencies. My phone was easy to setup through their web site, and when I had a problem (due to my own error!) customer service was friendly and got me up and running again quickly.

The coverage in my area is great, and the signal is crisp and clear. Mostly, though, I love the way TracFone handles the prepaid cards! They are the only provider I found that let you purchase minutes, and if you don't use them all by the expiration date, will carry them over! So, if you had 10 "units" remaining, but it was about to expire, you can purchase 10 more units (for only $... bucks!) and you would now have 20 units available... The other services all seemed to expire your minutes, no matter what... It's the only prepaid plan I saw that's a better value than a flat, monthly rate with a contract.

This service lets me have a digital, wireless phone, and I control how much or how little I spend for it! Perfect for teenagers, or infrequent users like myself. I love it!
