4 out of 5 stars It's done what I wanted.......2007-02-10

I bought the 100 MB external Zip drive a couple of days ago so that I could move files from an old Windows NT machine to a new Windows XP machine. The old machine has an internal 100 MB Zip drive, but no way of creating CDs or DVDs.

The external Zip drive plugs into a USB port on the new machine. Installing the software was quick and smooth, and I was able to move the files (about 1 GB total) without incident, although I had to do it in maybe 12-15 iterations. The drive was able to read about 600 KB per second.

I'm keeping the old machine around until it dies, so I'll probably use the external Zip drive occasionally to transfer files back and forth between the two machines. Since I've only had the Zip drive for a couple of days, I obviously can't speak about its long-term reliability. But if it died tomorrow, I'd still feel like I got what I wanted out of it.

However, if you won't be transfering files between a machine with USB ports and an old non-USB machine with a Zip drive of its own, I'm not sure why you'd bother with a Zip drive at all. Why not just get a portable flash drive instead?

One curious note: since I had to move the files less than 100 MB at a time, at the end of each stage, I'd remove the files I'd just moved in order to make room for the next batch of files. At first, I removed the files while the Zip disk was still in the external Zip drive. But one stage involved moving several hundred files; deleting them took the external Zip drive more than 5 minutes! The next stage also involved several hundred files, but this time I moved the Zip disk back to the NT machine's internal Zip drive before deleting them; this took just a few seconds.
