Terrible Tech Support.......2004-01-06

Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. They're tech support team is in Turkey and they dont care a thing about anybody. They kept hanging up on me and refused to help me saying it will take some time. When i called back- no one knew anything and had zero updates. DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS! Get a Gateway or Dell instead...two companies that actually care about their customers.

Three laptops.
5 service depot repairs in the first six months.
Three system board replacements.
One laptop not fully functional on day one.
Buy extra hard drive if you have a fleet; parts shortage delayed a repair to 30 days.
What's the point of a lightweight laptop if you need to send a spare with your users 'just in case' another failure occurs?

Outstanding Notebook.......2002-08-24

I've owned a Portege 2000 for a few months now, and work on it, full time, everyday - no desktop. Right now, I'm writing this review while hooked up to my home wireless network with cable modem access. I have had no problems with the built-in wireless features of the notebook. The battery life is the best I've every come across. The keyboard is "full-sized", and has a good "touch". The touchpad is a little small, but after I got used to it - it works well. I purchased the optional docking station which I keep at my office, and recommend it also. While it doesn't have alot of features, it does provide a quick way to hook up to my office's wired network and an AC power source. The lack of built-in floppy and CD drives may be a concern if you don't tie into a network. Doesn't come with a lot of software (no MS Office, MS Works, or WordPerfect Office), but these can be loaded once you have it. I've found that most machines come with too much junk software anyway, so this was refreshing. The notebook has a slot for a Secure Digital memorary card - which is a nice feature as many digital cameras (but not mine), and some PDAs (including my Toshiba E570 - another great product) have this slot / use this card which makes data transfer very simple. What else can I say - it looks cool, and the light weight is amazing. It is not a great "gaming machine", but it doesn't claim to be. In short - the perfect business machine for person who carries their notebook regularly, and is the networked.

Awesome ultra-light.......2002-08-05

If you don't care about the lack of a CD-ROM or a floppy, this little laptop is the greatest ultralight. With the extended life battery I get around 6 hours of continuous operation at my normal levels (if you dim the screen a lot, you can get closer to 8). It's comfortable, quiet, and reasonably fast. What it loses in lack of removable storage media (like a CD-R) it makes up in networking--it comes with integrated wired ethernet, wireless, and a modem. This little laptop rocks.

On a less utilitarian note, this laptop is really small and sleek. You'll be proud to show this one off to your friends and family. They don't get much cooler-looking than this.

For those of you who care about it, Linux installs with very little headache (and less for you than me now that I've figured out all the things that *don't* work; see [URL] for my install notes).

[A lot of money] for 256mb memory.......2002-04-18

Great, light, thin ... really really cool! Problem: Uses non-standard memory. Cost [alot] for a 256MB upgrade (almost 25% of the laptop cost!) !!!! Compaq, Dell and Gateway have ultra's very similar to this either out or coming out in the next few weeks .... their 256MB memory upgrades can be bought for $75. Unfortunately this is going to have to go back for that reason. I need the memory. [the cost] is outrageous!
