Amazon.com Product Description

A sensible compromise between price and performance, Sony's new Vaio PCV-RX820 desktop PC delivers ample speed, easy operation, and all the essential tools for the modern computer user. Those who must have the fastest processor and state-of-the-art goodies like DVD burners should investigate other Vaio models such as the stunning Vaio PCV-RZ16G, but the PCV-RX820 should suit everyone else just fine.

Featuring a 2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB of PC-2100 DDR RAM, and a 400 MHz front-side bus, the PCV-RX820 is powerful enough for virtually any current home, home office, or business application. Its integrated 32 MB SIS651 graphics accelerator will handle everything but high-end 3-D games. Its speedy 40x/32x/12x CD-RW drive will burn audio and data CDs and play retail music discs, and its built-in 16x DVD player allows you to enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbuster or quickly copy contents from one CD to another.

To help keep your files and programs in order and to ensure you have enough room for the future, the system also includes an 80 GB hard drive. Sony has even incorporated a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for older or smaller programs and files.

The PCV-RX820 sports a wealth of connection interfaces and devices, including a digital audio port, headphone-in and microphone-in, a parallel printer port, and an exclusive Memory Stick Media Slot. An integrated V.90 modem provides low-speed e-mail and Internet access, and a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet connection delivers high-speed Web and LAN connectivity. Anyone who transfers particularly large amounts of data (such as DV camcorder footage) will appreciate the unit's half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports and front and rear IEEE 1394 interfaces. Sony has not packaged the PCV-RX820 with a viewing screen, allowing users to make their own selection from the numerous available choices.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Computer for the price!.......2002-11-13

Well I have had this computer for about 10 days and everyone in the house loves the speed we are enjoying here. It's a Pentium 4 with the 512MB of RAM which I thought was overkill but it certainly zips through webforms fast and performs MS Office like a dream.

Sony loads you up with some nice software like Wordperfect and stuff to help you get the best use out of the CD-RW and DVD drives they installed. The front access to USB and memory stick ports are very convienent too!

When I opened the box and put it on my desk I was really puzzled on how you oopen this computer up. So rather than be totally confused I went to Circuit City and the salesmen show me how the top pops off after you push 2 tabs and they the sides come off after you push another tab inside. Easy as pie! I haven't messed with that. My only problem was my top cover had to be replaced by Sony because of a sharp egde. But other than that it's a great choice for a family PC.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect balance of features and value........2002-11-13

This is another excellent entry from Sony CE, again gaining high marks for its value. It features an my favorite processor, an Intel Pentium 4 running at 2.0 GHz and offers 512 megs of very fast DDRAM. It also has 4 2.0-ready USB ports, a large 80 gig hard drive and a very good CD-R/W + DVD player. My only complaint is the lack of a true game-ready, 64 megs (or higher!) of video RAM. The included 32 meg Sony in-house, on-chip setup here just won't cut the mustard. There is, however, an open 4x AGP slot, so an upgrade can be bought and slid into place in 10 minutes without any fuss. In addition, there is no monitor included here, so that's another important expense to add. Nonetheless, it's a quality machine with lots of great features and it's one you'll probably be happy with for years to come.
