Returned two within the warranty period already.......2005-03-30
The monitor works great when it works.
I just can't recommend it because I've had two monitors now show the same defect (interlaced vertical lines of the wrong colors, flickering edges/pixels on shapes, even when disconnected from the PC) before the 3-year warranty has expired. Sony is great in that they will exchange the monitor with a refurbished monitor -- and pay for FedEx shipping -- but since they replace it with the exact same model, if there is a common defect in the design (which, in this case, only seems to show up after about a year of use), I'm not sure what the recourse will be after the warranty expires.
Works great after some tweaking.......2003-09-19
I picked up this monitor a little while ago, looking for a 17" LCD that would be a little easier on the eyes for a coder getting annoyed with staring at CRTs for long lengths of time. The specs seemed good, I was especially impressed with the response time, which was much better than most other LCD's in its class, and really helps get rid of that nasty 'ghosting' in movies or games.
There were a few problems I had with this though. The first was that the screen was way too bright. Seriously, I tried playing around with the monitor settings for quite some time, and I still couldn't get it right. The whole point I got this was to reduce eye strain, and it seemed as bad as a CRT. I eventually got it to look nice with a combination of monitor settings and graphics card software settings. Admittedly, this brightness thing might bug most people less than it did me.
Also, when I bought this thing, I think I was looking at the specs for the S71R, not the S71, and there's a big difference in terms of viewing angle. The top part of the screen can be noticeably darker than the bottom bart of the screen when viewing it straight-on in certain situations. Not really bad, but you can notice it on dark colored backgrounds.
On the whole, I am very satisfied with this LCD. No dead pixels (on mine anyway), great response time, with a few drawbacks mentioned above.
