Nicely affordable yet packed full of powerful video and audio playback features, the Toshiba SD-3990 single-disc, progressive scan DVD player has a stylishly silver, super-slim profile that measures just 1.65 inches high. It's also compatible with a wide variety of disc and digital file formats, including DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, and VCD discs as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG (Kodak Picture and FujiColor CDs) content burned to disc. It's also DivX Home Theater Certified, meaning that it's compatible with video burned to disc using both the DivX video format.
The SD-3990 performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.
With the JPEG Viewer, you can easily display your favorite digital photos and create custom slideshows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The interactive Digital Picture Zoom feature allows you to select an area of the video from a DVD and magnify it. Other DVD playback features include fast scan, slow motion, multi-angle selection, multi-subtitle selection, and parental lock.
You get vivid, realistic sound, thanks to Toshiba's 24-bit/192 kHz pulse code modulation (PCM) audio processor. PCM audio translates digital signals from your DVDs and CDs into warmer, natural sound. The DVD player offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can connect to a multi-channel home theater surround sound system via the coaxial digital audio output. It also produces 3D virtual surround sound from two speakers. It features the following video and audio connections:
Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Computing power doesn't have to rest on your desktop; it can travel with you. Keep yourself informed and organized with the Philips Nino 510. The Nino 510 manages your calendar, business contacts, and to-do list; recognizes voice commands; and records voice memos. It also sports a beautiful, razor-sharp color display.Setting up the Nino 510 was easy--we just inserted the battery pack, connected the Nino dock to our PC, dropped in the Windows CE CD-ROM and followed the setup wizard. The process was entirely straightforward as we followed the instructions on the Quick Start card.
The 510 has a crystal-clear LCD display with 256 vibrant colors--among the brightest, sharpest displays of any handheld PDA we've tested. You navigate through the Nino's applications by either pressing several side-mounted buttons (designed for one-handed operation), by speaking voice commands, or by tapping the stylus on the backlit display. The Nino is especially comfortable to hold and operate. For text input, you have your choice of tapping the on-screen "keyboard" (standard or Tegic T9) or using one of the handwriting recognition systems (Jot or CalliGrapher).
In our tests, we trained NinoVoice--the voice command recognition system--to recognize our commands for common applications (for example, saying "Note Taker" to activate Note Taker). We found NinoVoice no more or less convenient than the more conventional buttons or stylus, but it's still a cool feature. Also included is CalliGrapher, the sophisticated handwriting-recognition software from ParaGraph. CalliGrapher does not require that you train it to recognize commands, although you can for improved accuracy. This software also recognizes cursive writing.
With its attractive, ergonomic design, digital audio abilities, terrific software suite, and beautiful color display, we highly recommend the Nino 510--the PDA that can keep you both organized and entertained.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent PDA for the Price.......2004-02-20
Nino Better than the Rest.......2000-03-03
A constant criticism of Windows CE devices are the multitude of software options that aren't really useful. But, I love the voice recognition software and the digital messaging. I use it to recap sales calls all the time.
I too had some problems with installation, so I sympathize with the previous comments. If Philips has indeed discontinued the Nino, I hope their replacement is even better.
Nino - No wonder they quit making it.......2000-02-16
poor cradle design.......1999-12-13
Philips NINO still the best bet!.......1999-12-08
When the NINO first came out,it was a dramaticaly different palm size pc and it was widely accepted as the best. Now most Palm-pc manufacturers have copied Philips success.
First off, the NINO is ergonomic. I did the review for the 312 and the same goes here, it is easy to hold and access information with ONE HAND. Compared to others (like the stupid Compaq 2150 I have) that are trying to copy the 3Com Palms. You can scroll, enter and exit with one hand and access your favorite applications as well with one hand!
The 510 includes the latest software package for the NINO series and if you look at the reviews from the major magazines and online computer sites they love it because it is HIGH END software. (even the voice recognition software which is fun to use, but you'll be quicker using the buttons).
The color ppcs are nice, however most windows ce basic applications don't really use it, it's still mostly gray. However add on packs and software are using it and when you want to view pictures (I have all my pictures on my ppc instead of in a wallet) you can pop it on and show your friends...they love it because they are seeing it on a ppc.
Final word, you'll love the NINO 510. Philips provides great customer service (I used them before and they were very quick in helping me out) and they are sturdy. I used my NINO in a hectic retail environment for months where it got banged around, stuck it in my BACK POCKET, dropped it, etc. It only gave out when I hit the screen with a metal beam (which would kill virtually anything anyways.). It actually still did work after that with the big crack in the screen but I couldn't use it because the touch screen was damaged...talk about takes a licking and keeps on ticking! Get extra insurance or extended warranty though because the screen is your most expensive part of the ppc.
There is a new windows ce 'active sync' which is what you use to connect your ppc to your computer. It works great (version3)
You'll find plenty of places on the net to sync your ppc and computer such as yahoo!, etc. where you can maintain your address book, calendar, tasks, etc. Place PCS cell phone notification like I do and even when you don't have your ppc you'll be notified! Connect a palm pc modem to your NINO 510 (get it before january 2000...50 buck special offer from microsoft also on the windows ce website) and you'll be surfing the web.
There is no way Palm operating system pcs can match what windows ce can do. Windows CE operates just like windows so there is a 0 learning curve...besides, there is more flexibility and tons of future add ons that only windows ce can offer that the palm os lacks. Palm pcs are ok if you want a bland, 'basic', palm size pc. If you want the best, stick WindowsCE though.
They are sturdy little machines and are truely fun to have!
