The SD-5980 is outfitted with 10-bit/54 MHz video DACs (digital-to-analog converters) and ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs for seamless, flicker-free images when viewed through high-definition and HD-ready TVs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p/720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using a minimum of twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. For compatibility with traditional SD (standard-definition) televisions, the SD-5980 sports composite- and S-video outputs.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface supporting standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

The SD-5980 also performs 3:2 pulldown reversal. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion. The "expanded" mode in the player's black-level setting produces richer, deeper black tones in every image. PLUGE (Picture Line Up Generation Equipment) delivers black as well as below-black signals to a television.

Digital picture zoom is an interactive DVD feature that lets you select and magnify an area of a picture you want to zoom in on. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces high color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. You can also use this feature to expand letterbox-only films to full-screen (4:3 aspect ratio) dimension.

For audio, choose from 2-channel analog audio outs (which benefit from 24-bit/192 kHz digital-to-analog audio converters) or either of 2 forms of digital-audio output, optical or coaxial, for transmitting discrete, multichannel surround signals--either Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1--to a compatible audio/video receiver and speaker system. (Both Dolby and DTS signals can be transmitted via HDMI as well.)

Listening in surround sound puts you right in the middle of the action, whether you're playing an action movie, a concert video, or a period drama. Not set up for surround yet? A special 3-D Surround circuit simulates surround sound from any 2 speakers.

I had great hopes for this machine. Immediately I noticed that the first line of the entry always seemed to be in a dark shadow and I had to try tipping the unit to get light into the inner screen to make it readable. It too often doesn't have the words --- even many very common ones in its database. The voice is extremely fuzzy when you try the audio pronunciation feature. It only has a few forms of many of the the words I am seeking. If this unit really has 250,000 words -- as they tell us---then they should create a new one with a couple of million

Better than a paper dictionary.......2003-01-14

I like being able to find words quickly, in either English or Spanish, with this dictionary. It contains a large number of words, and it conjugates verbs. There have been quite a few times it has not had a word I requested. Its important weaknesses are that it translates only words and does not recognize phrases; also, the speaking voice is fuzzy. I also noticed that it mispronounced one Spanish word (pajaro). On the up side, mine has worked well for 3-4 years, and it does not require frequent battery changes.

Yes, This is a good translator gave it has a gift to my girlfriend and she loves it and it really helped my spanish writing skills.Only downfall is battery removal & install. The Screen could be better.

I am a physician and in the summer time I have some migrant patients come to work in our area, I always feel handicap to communicate with them and make them feel we care for them. So I brought some spanish medical conversation books but I can't pronounce it, so it was useless. As I found out about Franklin BES 1840 and brought it. Since then I use the BES 1840 to help me and I can communicate adequately for my patients to understand some simple phases, and they appreciate that I try to learn their language. I highly recommend Franklin BES 1840, it may be sound mechanical, but very adequate and easy to use. I do wish they can expand their vocabulary.

Good Toy for Learning Spanish.......2002-05-14

After reading all of these negative reviews I almost didn't buy this. I'm glad I did. I am using it as a compliment to my Pimsleur Speak and Read program. You can program a list of 40 words you are trying to learn and then use the games to help you memorize them. I prefer Hangman. I also use it to look up words because it is smaller and easier to use than my desk dictionary. If you want to learn Spanish, buy the Pimsleur program. The speaking function is worthless on the BES-1840. It is difficult to understand and the pronunciation is wrong many times. Also it is somewhat pricey but it makes a good toy for learning Spanish.
