Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

For non-HD-ready TVs sets, the unit's top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. And, for standard 4:3 aspect-ratio TVs, the unit's Active Fullscreen Function (AFF) lets you view widescreen movies in full-screen, without black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

The display quality of the KDS VS-21e amazed us; the display has rich color and tight contrast and brightness controls. We found the DVD playback to be bright and colorful, as were screens using various graphics programs. Onscreen controls include RGB color temperature, pincushion controls, horizontal and vertical convergence adjustment, and positioning controls. Calibration controls are a cinch with a four-button touch pad and easily navigable onscreen display menu.

Tired of the flicker of low-refresh-rate monitors? The Visual Sensation supports a whopping 1,920 x 1,440 at 75 Hz. And even if you prefer lower resolutions, the VS-21e supports sky-scraping refresh rates. For graphics professionals, the VS-21e provides BNC connections for a top-quality image. The only flaw we noticed was a slight geometric distortion that couldn't be corrected, in the corners of the monitor.
