Spin movies, music, photo CDs, and enjoy VHS tapes right from one handy device. The ADV-3800 from Apex includes a progressive-scan DVD-Video player with MP3 and WMA file playback as well as a four-head, hi-fi stereo VCR all in a single sleek, silver chassis.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the ADV-3800 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

For non-HD-ready TVs sets, the unit's top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. And, for standard 4:3 aspect-ratio TVs, the unit's Active Fullscreen Function (AFF) lets you view widescreen movies in full-screen, without black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

The ADV-3800 also delivers the convenience of VHS recording and playback--a great way to time shift your TV viewing and share your camcorder footage with loved ones, and the only way to enjoy your extensive library of videocassettes. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into convenient front-panel jacks for fast hookups.

The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. If you route the stereo output to an AV receiver, you can even enjoy four-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic mixes from TV and Dolby-encoded cassettes.

Amazon.com Review

If you're tired of squinting at the small monitor in front of you, the KDS Visual Sensation 21e is the 21-inch solution to your tiny-display woes. Whether you're a high-end CAD user, graphics professional, or even a casual user, the KDS VS-21e offers an advanced and robust display at a slim price. This massive display provides 19.9 inches of display, perfect for those who are bogged down by the clutter of overlapping windows.

The display quality of the KDS VS-21e amazed us; the display has rich color and tight contrast and brightness controls. We found the DVD playback to be bright and colorful, as were screens using various graphics programs. Onscreen controls include RGB color temperature, pincushion controls, horizontal and vertical convergence adjustment, and positioning controls. Calibration controls are a cinch with a four-button touch pad and easily navigable onscreen display menu.

Tired of the flicker of low-refresh-rate monitors? The Visual Sensation supports a whopping 1,920 x 1,440 at 75 Hz. And even if you prefer lower resolutions, the VS-21e supports sky-scraping refresh rates. For graphics professionals, the VS-21e provides BNC connections for a top-quality image. The only flaw we noticed was a slight geometric distortion that couldn't be corrected, in the corners of the monitor. Even with this rather minor flaw, the KDS Visual Sensation 21e is the all-in-one solution for graphics professionals, businesses, and even everyday users. <I>--Dan Simpson

    1 out of 5 stars KDS's warranty stinks.......2004-03-24

Supposedly, we have a 3 year warranty. Well, I'm two and a half years into my warranty, and my monitor has failed. After two months of waiting for a replacement, they called me back and told me that I'd have to take a cheaper, new (but older--1998) model monitor that has an inch less than viewable and a .28 dot pitch.

I'll never buy another KDS monitor again.

    5 out of 5 stars Windows XP?.......2001-12-20

This monitor looks like a winner, but I wouldn't go out and buy one right now if I were you. Check for windows xp drivers and graphics card drivers for windows xp (if you have it) before buying this one. Once you do that, you will have an excelent and affordable monitor from KDS. Way to go KDS!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value; Why even consider a 17" or 19" monitor?.......2001-09-15

Over the years I've had lots of PCs and equipment. When I read the reviews before I bought this item I was a bit confused. Other reviewers made it sound like there would be installation issues, and that adjustments had to be made for crystal clarity. I didn't have to do anything but plug it in.
How could anyone who bought the KDS 21" VS-21E have anything but rave reviews. It's awesome! I will never buy any other monitor for any PC, for myself, or anyone else. Goodbye 17" and 19" monitors. If people ever figure this gem of a deal out smaller monitors will become extinct. KDS, you really outdid yourself! A most excellent price and value!

2 out of 5 stars You will hate it if you have used flat screen monitors.......2001-08-28

I bought this to be a companion to my 2-year old 21" flat screen monitor in a dual monitor setup using the ATI Radeon VE video card. The decision was based partly on its price, partly on the KDS' nice warranty and partly on the reviews at this site. It turned out to be a bad decision, not because I got a bad unit which had unsharp text and graphics but more importantly because I just couldn't adjust my eyes to the screen curvature. If your eyes are already adjusted to a flat display, then you will shun this and all other monitors that have a curved screen. If you have never used a flat screen monitor before, I think this may not be a bad choice for an upgrade from your existing 17" or 19" monitor. However, with flat screen monitors costing just slightly more than curved screen ones, and the price differential narrowing each week, I think you owe it to your eye comfort to get a flat screen monitor, especially if you work several hours each day in front of one.

    5 out of 5 stars KDS VS-21E massive size + low cost.......2001-07-21

I bought this monitor in March of 2000 and it's now July 2001. It has been a wonderful monitor, except for the heat (but all 21" put out tons of heat), It's starting to flicker so I called KDS and they said they would ship a new one to me right away and replace it. Found out they have no questions asked 3 year warranty. I was very impressed. I mostly play Diablo2 and watch DVD's on it. and it's on 12 hours a day, for the price you can't beat it.
