Amazon.com Product Description
Panasonic's remanufactured, progressive scan DVD-LX9 offers the versatility of a portable DVD player alongside the performance of a sophisticated home-theater component--and you can use it as both. The player handles DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM playback, as well as standard and recordable CDs, including MP3- and WMA-encoded discs. Its slender chassis holds a solid-sized, 9-inch widescreen (16:9) LCD screen and a built-in rechargeable battery (good for about 2.5 hours between charges).

Adding to the fun are the external powered speakers that come with the unit, along with the docking cradle that keeps everything connected. Each 2-watt speaker delivers far better sound than a built-in speaker would provide, while the docking cradle offers such bonuses as a switchable component video output--which lets you connect the DVD player to a high-definition TV and enjoy the best possible picture--an S-video output, and a 5.1-channel audio output.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-LX9 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs thanks to its progressive scan technology. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD player. To enjoy the progressive scan functionality, viewers will need to connect the DVD player to an HDTV through the docking cradle's component video output.

Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LX9's highest-end sound derives from the immersive six-channel DVD-Audio music format. DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound in both multichannel and stereo. The DVD-LX9 performs its own decoding of DVD-Audio signals, passing high-resolution analog--not digital--audio to your surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate this feature. Audio features also include DTS and Dolby Digital decoding with 5.1-channel analog- and digital-audio outputs and a Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing. Advanced Surround Sound (VSS), meanwhile, simulates surround effects from any two speakers or from headphones.

The video extras include a Cinema mode, which reduces the detrimental effects of screen glare from ambient light, rendering cinematic colors in pictures that are gentle on the eyes. Further, Cinema mode improves the visibility of details in dark scenes by automatically adjusting the picture contrast. The DVD-LX9 also offers high-speed, five-step Smooth Motion Scan, which provides crystal-clear fast forward and rewind. At the highest setting, the unit scans at an incredible 200 times faster than normal speed. The unit even includes a Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot that's compatible with AAC, MP3, JPEG, MPEG4, or voice G.726 files.

Finally, the player is HighMAT compatible. High-Performance Media Access Technology is a standard co-developed by Panasonic and Microsoft to improve interoperability for digital media programming between PCs and electronics devices. HighMAT provides an efficient method for arranging digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable media.

The DVD-LX9 measures 9.13 by 1.21 by 6.83 inches (W x H x D), not including the stereo speakers or docking station, and is backed by a 90-day warranty.

4 out of 5 stars Just what I needed for an external USB floppy drive.......2001-09-10

We have an iBook and an iMac, both running OS9. We installed the VST external floppy in minutes and were up and running, easily moving the drive from one computer to the next (although, as the documentation warned, the floppy drive must be directly connected to the USB port or a powered hub, for example daisy-chaining off the iMac's USB keyboard does not supply enough power to the drive). Unplugging the drive while the disk is mounted on the desktop automatically dismounted the drive too. This drive was simple to setup and and is easy to use - just what we needed!

2 out of 5 stars Mixed impression.......2001-07-31

I ordered this floppy drive in order to save data to an external media with an iMac running OS X. The drive itself seems well constructed, although I was disappointed that it did not come with a grape "skin".

OS X interoperability is poor, however. OS X recognizes the drive when it is plugged in to the usb port, and recognizes the disk if it is inserted when the drive is plugged in. HOWEVER, ejecting a disk after it is connected to the computer doesn't work.

Some of this may be because OS X is expecting software-controlled ejects, but it is still disappointing. VST still doesn't have an OS X driver available (as of 7/30/01). Unfortunately, this seems to be the only game in town.

5 out of 5 stars Great product!!.......2001-06-30

Great product. I installed the software without issues on my g4 and was up an running in a few. Also it recognizes both pc and mac formatted discs!!WOW its about time!!

4 out of 5 stars A good basic floppy drive.......2001-02-22

I have these drives on all our new Macs because many still use floppies to bring work home. All have functioned properly so what can I say? If you need a floppy drive on a new Mac this is a good one to buy. It is thin and travels well if you need it on the road. It does not read 800K disks.

1 out of 5 stars Defective product.......2000-12-23

I'm not sure whether the software is buggy or the disk drive itself is just not able to read disks, but I wasn't able to read either PC or Mac disks with this disk drive. I double-checked everything from the USB plug to the software installation and used disks I knew were good. No matter what I did, the disk drive insisted that the disk was damaged and refused to read it.

Furthermore, when the disk drive wouldn't read my disk, it would affect my entire USB network and put my printer on the fritz as well. It's literally worse than useless.

Time for me to enter the new millennium and maybe get one of those flashy Zip drives. This floppy disk drive, though, is getting returned.
