Amazon.com Product Description

Everyone seems to have a convenient and cool-looking handheld computer these days. But if you've been reluctant to plunk down a large chunk of cash to organize your phone numbers and calendar, the Oregon Scientific ECHO may be the gadget you've been waiting for.

This affordable organizer has all of the basic functions of the more expensive PDAs, including a docking station that enables you to exchange data with your PC. Plus, you get handy functions like a calculator, world time, and daily alarms to keep you on schedule.

At 512 KB, the ECHO's memory is more than big enough to hold hundreds of phone numbers, Web site addresses, and short memos. Enter memos and notes using the onscreen keyboard--a small typewriter icon will pop up on the screen and you just tap the letters with the included stylus. Each memo can hold up to 100 characters.

Navigating the ECHO's menu is easy with oversized icons for phone book, notepad, calendar, calculator, clock, PC sync, and other choices. A row of icons on the left side of the screen allows you to scroll, delete, edit, and return.

A great feature of many handhelds is their ability to transfer data to and from your PC. If you enter an appointment into the ECHO's calendar, for example, just slide the unit into the included docking station and start the linking software on your PC (the ECHO comes with PC Sync on CD-ROM). With one click of a button, your desktop schedule is updated.

Another plus for the ECHO is its compact size--it measures 3.34 by 2.13 inches and is only 1/4-inch thick. At about the size of a credit card, the ECHO fits easily into a shirt pocket and weighs only a few ounces. The ECHO shuts itself off automatically after three minutes of inactivity to save battery power.

The ECHO is powered by two lithium cell batteries, which should last for months with normal usage.

1 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2004-03-04

Synching is tricky (and the process is not spelled out appropriately in the user guide) but I finally figured out the nuances after much trial and error and boy was I excited! Too bad the thing died on me a few weeks later. I bought it because I wanted the smallest organizer possible to carry in my purse replacing my address book and the scraps of paper I jot notes on. Now I'm stuck trying to figure out which Palm or Handspring is smallest, lightest and most reliable for a reasonable price. Yes, the Echo is inexpensive, but it's also cheap.

5 out of 5 stars One Small Step for PDAs, One Giant Leap for kids.......2003-10-23

Hello shoppers! I have been looking for a good, affordable PDA ever since about 1 month ago. One day, I was on the Office Depot Website, and they had this on sale for only 9.99! I thought to myself, why not try it out. The dilivery date(The one they gave me anyways) was the 22nd of October. It actualy came the day before.
This PDA sometimes does not synchronize with your computer, well thats the trouble I had, until I bothered to look on the box which said that you must update the Sync. Program. I did, and it worked! All though it is not backlit, it is awsome. It can do conversions like Miles to Cm, or Euros to Yuns, whatever!!! I would reccoment this to anybody, excpecialy people who dont want to spend 100+ dollars on a PDA!

1 out of 5 stars Echo is NOT back lit........2003-10-09

Well I only ordered this pda from amazon, b/c it was $9.99 and b/c it was backlit. The description says back lit and it's not back lit at all. So now I have 2 pda's that are not back lit... Also, the cost was 9.99 but by the time they added shipping the thing cost almost $20 bucks to get here from amazon. Finally, if I ship it back b/c it isn't back lit at all, then I lose my shipping charges, plus the shipping back charges... So I might as well just keep it, and wonder what to do with it...

4 out of 5 stars Great value at [$]........2003-03-21

This credit card sized PDA has most of the typical features that would make one consider a PDA. I purchased my ECHO on sale for [$]. I mention this so it can be taken in consideration in light of my 4 star rating. As mentioned by another reviewer, the screen can be hard to see at times. Some of the icons are not clear at first. Now that I have them memorized, and know what they do, its not a problem. I noticed a reviewer mentioning that they had to change list into text etc. This is not necessary. There are two software packages on the CD, although this may not be as obvious as it could be. One is an stand alone onragizer program that runs on the windows desktop and links with the PDA. This program's look is a bit unattractive, but it is easy to use and does the job. The second software program allows you to synchronize the PDA with a variety of well known programs like MS Outlook, Lotus Organizer and others. I have addittionally tested it with MS Outlook XP, and MS Outlook 2003 BETA 2 with success. The only reason that I did not give this device 5 out of 5 stars is do to the lack of support for the TO DO list in an organizer program.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but no star.......2002-06-25

I'm an 11 year old who loses track of the papers that I write my notes on, I bought this when we had to make a project to show the whole school, it worked great until I needed to save a lot of information on it, it said I couldn't save more than 100 words, knew this but it was very annoying. Don't get me wrong, this is a good tiny little computer and it works great until you need to save a lot of data. This is great if you need just to jot down reminders or remember dates but don't get this if you have to save a bit of data.
