Product Description

The slim EM-500 is a mobile multimedia tool that targets both the younger market and professionals. Designed to highlight Casio's new faster processor and available in 5 different colors, the EM-500 is stylishly designed and engineered to take advantage of the new and emerging digital content that is available on the Internet. The EM-500 is the first Pocket PC to feature the new MMC (multimedia card memory system) featuring postage stamp size memory cards with up to 64MB of storage.

Amazon.com Review

The Cassiopeia EM-500, Casio's follow-up to its E-100 series of personal digital assistants, closely mirrors the E-115 but offers a few changes. The biggest change is the move to using MultiMediaCard (MMC) memory over the more standard CompactFlash memory slot. The postage stamp-size MMC cards offer needed memory expandability (as the EM-500 comes with only 16 MB of internal memory, compared to the 32 MB of the E-115), especially if you plan to use the EM-500 as a portable MP3 player--one of its many multimedia capabilities.

While MMC over CompactFlash limits the ability of the EM-500 to use many Pocket PC peripherals, we were willing to overlook that once we got a peek at the EM-500's gorgeous TFT screen. This very bright, very colorful (65,536 colors, to be exact) display shines beautifully when you're playing games or watching mobile video player clips, which run along at a respectable 15 to 20 frames per second with the EM-500's 150 MHz MIPS processor.

The thick EM-500 (about twice the thickness of the Palm Vx) offers standard Casio programmable buttons to bring up the menu, calendar, and contacts, as well as a navigational D-pad, which is great for gaming. In addition to functioning as a stereo MP3 player (when using the included headphones), the EM-500 also works as a voice recorder, allowing you to dictate reminders for yourself or voice messages to send with e-mail. Casio promises six hours of battery life, but we often were able to get seven or more as long as we left the backlight on medium brightness.

With its IrDA port, the EM-500 can communicate with wireless devices, and its USB connection provides speedy data transfer--even installing programs larger than a megabyte took only a few seconds.

Despite the limited memory and the lack of CompactFlash support, the powerful processor, excellent display, and long battery life make the EM-500 a competitive entry into the Pocket PC market. --J. Curtis

2 out of 5 stars Power problems plague EM-500.......2002-06-24

I bought my EM-500 last fall and have had to send it back twice now for repairs. For some reason, out of the blue, it just refuses to either turn on, or remain on after a few minutes. There is a power update that I installed when I first got it but it doesn't seem to fix the problem at hand. If you're looking for dependency and reliablity, I defiantly wouldn't recommend the EM-500. I've lost all my data twice now (partly my fault because I didn't do a backup).

i've just ordered an em-500 and am very excited to get it. I can't wait to get this device and see what it can do. so far, the reviews have been great and i am very anxious to try it. i will get back when i receive my device....

    2 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2001-12-01

I both like and hate my Casiopia. From a hardware perspective, it is great. The display and color is wonderful and I love the buttons. Also, unlike the Palms, they didn't waste 1/3 of the screen on a typing space so you can see more on the screen.

What I hate about it is the software. As always, Micro$oft makes (...) software that is slow and propriatary. I cannot get anything non-Microsoft to work very well. I tried to get the Franklin Covey software to work and it wreaks havoc on my task lists. When I called about it, I was told that Microsoft keeps changing things and they couldn't keep up. Also, when I asked around about other software I find that the selection is abysmal. It takes about 30 minutes to synch. And if the first of the two batteries is low, it won't let you use it (it turns itself off as soon as you turn it on) even though the second battery is full.

Hey Casio! Ever think of using Linux?

I don't know if I would rather have the Casiopia or a Palm. I love the screen size but I hate the software. I think I will wait for the Cell Phone/PDA combos to come down in price.

4 out of 5 stars Great Pocket PC!.......2001-09-23

Well I just bought an EM-500 Sky Blue and am very happy. I know that there are going to be a lot of new Pocket PC's hitting the market soon but I did some research and found out that this is really all I need. The price is great (only 299.99 here) and the MMC/SD cards are going down! There is an optional modem from casio and a few other venors that plugs into the port at the bottem of the devise. I have 3 32 Mb MMC cars (I own an Mp3 player that uses them)and that is plenty of space for anything I want. If you have been thinking of buying this, do it. You will be very happy!
