Amazon.com Review

One of the main complaints about the first few generations of electronic book readers is their cost--who wants to pay several hundred dollars for the equivalent of a few $3 paperbacks? Enter Franklin's new line of eBookMan devices, available in three different models. We got an early peek at the top level eBookMan, which features 16 MB of memory, a sharp 200 x 240 16-level gray scale display, and excellent versatility.

In addition to being an e-book reader, the eBookMan also plays audio files (both audiobooks and MP3s), records voice messages, and functions as a respectable PDA. A flip-up cover and hard rubber outer coating afford protection for the device. With a USB-connected cradle, transfers between desktop and the eBookMan proceed quickly.

While the eBookMan offers a date book, address book, memo application (using natural handwriting recognition), and voice memo recorder, its main angle is still as a book reader. The large screen and powerful backlight makes reading literature in the Franklin Reader format clear, though the backlight did seem to drain the batteries rather quickly in our demo unit.

Ironically, the eBookMan's versatility also draws attention to its limitations. While the unit will play MP3 files, it can only store four to six songs at once with its 16 MB of memory. However, if you pick up an optional MultiMediaCard with up to 64 MB of memory, it is possible to adapt the eBookMan into a more respectable MP3 player.

While you'll need to spend a little extra to money to get your eBookMan to reach its full potential, the unit's low original cost and variety of applications make it an excellent gateway into the world of electronic literature. --J. Curtis

    5 out of 5 stars a good .......2007-06-10

The price is right for what it does and it does what it does well.I am very satisfied with this ebookman. The only possible improvement I can concieve would be to enable it to accept higher-capacity memory.But.then it wouldnt be quite what it is,so what the heck? lol All in all,I am very satisfied with the unit and the service. well done (...)!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Franklin EBM-911.......2007-05-07

It is a nice device, but you get more from an iPAQ or a Palm plus you get the added benifit of starting with a lot more memory and being able to increase your memory using SD cards. The Franklin is supposed to use MMC cards to increase the memory, but I was unable to access books loaded on the MMC card to read on my Bookman without using the computer to transfer files. Not very convenient when you are on a plane or a train in Asia and want to read a book on the card.
On the iPAQ or Palm you can download files onto the SD card and open them using the device while on the go, no need to transfer files using the computer.
I do like the size of the screen, much better than the iPaq or Palm, but it does not make up for the lack of sufficient memory.
I also dislike that you cannot download Adobe reader or the Microsoft reader to read books in those formats.
While I do enjoy the books available in the Mobipocket format, I have books in the other formats and I cannot use them on the Bookman.
I wish they would improve the product and release it again. I did not realize it was discontinued when I purchased it, my fault for not investigating more throughly.

    3 out of 5 stars Workable Problems.......2007-05-06

Only use mine for reading-discarded all other programming. And ABSOLUTELY great to carry in purse (w/ extra batteries).
--However, when changing batteries, must wait for at least a minute for the unit to recognize new batteries. Or pragramming wiped.
--The largest MMC is 64MB, only get from Ectaco. Specialty item.
--When the chip gets to be 50% full, might notice connection problems when the MMC is in the unit. 10 minute wait turns to 30 min., then to an hour, or never, all the time eating up battery power. Guide book says to load anything on MMC, must be in unit (found a way around that).
All it needs is A/C adaptor & much bigger MMC.

    2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2007-04-09

I had the opportunity to try out the Franklin and the Sony ebook readers and was amazed to find that the Sony is a better overall product. I've always been a big fan of Franklin, but found this particular product to not be user friendly. It would've been better for them to focus on one to three main functions rather than trying to do everything. If I want that much functionality, I can buy a PDA. The batteries required more recharging than I felt comfortable with, considering I planned to use it on long trips where there might not be an easy way to recharge. Overall I was very disappointed with it.

    5 out of 5 stars Ebookman rocks........2006-03-16

I really enjoy this item for downloading ebooks. There's not alot of memory for the MP3's but that's okay you just need to buy a MMC card (or Multi-Media Card I like Scan Disk they are a good brand). But when You get your book downloaded it's all good and I don't use MP3's any way so no big. It also has all the PDA features such as voice memo, phone book, calculator, game downloading capability, dictionary, ect. Over all a great way to keep organized and to read ebooks.
