Product Description
The JVC line of DVD/VCR combination units features a new deck that delivers convenience, quality and affordability. The JVC HR-XVC28B is a new entry-level combo that offers outstanding performance combined with convenience features that make operation quick and easy. Two key features make the new combo easy to use. With JVC's Auto Select feature all that's required to begin DVD or VHS playback is to insert a cassette or disc - it's that simple, and works with both the RF and video outputs. And a new feature this year is one-touch replay, which at the touch of a button on the slim, redesigned remote replays the last 10 seconds of DVD or seven seconds of VCR programming - ideal for those situations when a bit of dialog was missed or that funny moment needs to be replayed immediately. The HR-XVC28B offers playback of DVD Video, CD Audio, CD-R/RW, JPEG (CD-R/RW), Video CD/SVCD and DVD-R/-RW (video format). Other DVD features include a high performance one-chip AV decoder featuring adaptive geometrical chroma mapping, coaxial PCM audio output, 5.1-channel Dolby Digital/DTS digital output, component video output, multi-session CD playback, 10 bit/54MHz video digital-to-analog converter (DAC), 192kHz/24 bit audio DAC, and Express Play Start that initiates program play about five seconds after the tray is closed. Other features offered by the HR-XVC28B include S-VHS Quasi-Playback (SQPB) and a multi-language color on-screen display.
Amazon.com Product Description
Why fuss with multiple hookups? JVC's HR-XVC28B combination DVD player and VCR lets you enjoy cutting-edge DVDs alongside your existing library of videocassettes--and you won't have to continually switch inputs on your TV whenever you switch viewing formats from the combo unit. The HR-XVC28B provides a DVD and a VHS signal through both its composite-video (yellow RCA) and standard RF video outputs. You'll also enjoy MP3 music, JPEG image CD, and video-mode DVD-RW and DVD-R media playback, as well as hi-fi VHS performance. And, you can tape something while you're watching a DVD--get the rental back on time without having to miss your favorite TV show.

With JVC's Auto Select feature, all that's required to begin DVD or VHS playback is to insert a cassette or disc. That's it--the component will begin playback of whichever format it senses. And, at the touch of a button on the unit's slim, newly designed remote control, the HR-XVC28B will replay either the last 10 seconds of a DVD or the last 7 seconds of a videocassette.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the HR-XVC28B stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs via JVC's Direct Digital Progressive Scan feature. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Shared (DVD/VCR) composite-video and RF outputs--in addition to DVD-only S-video outputs--together accommodate all standard (non-HD) TVs.

Exclusive VCR features include 1-month, 8-event programming, index search, auto clock setting, and auto tracking. The unit offers an RF input for cable-box signals. S-VHS quasi playback lets you watch, in regular VHS resolution, tapes recorded in Super-VHS, normally only compatible with more expensive S-VHS machines. A set of front-panel audio/video inputs accommodates a camcorder or gaming console.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals for DVD can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (RCA coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo unit, a multi-brand, full-function remote control, remote batteries, a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect, a user's manual, and warranty information.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 19" Flat Monitor.......2001-11-05

I've done some research on all the 19" Flat monitors on the market before I bought the Sony E400. It's one of the best quality monitors you can buy for the money. The picture is incredibly sharp and clear.

5 out of 5 stars A they say in Wayne's World... " E X C E L L E N T ! ".......2001-06-18

Incredibly crisp image - even miniscule text is sharp a legible. Great color saturation - colors look rich. Image is so sharp I can display at 1280x1024 and leave the settings on "small fonts and small icons" without any strain. Fairly short for a 19" monitor too - takes up less space than my 17" Nanao did. Image sharpness blows away my old 19" Viewsonic 790 - which it has, ahem, replaced.

4 out of 5 stars An almost perfect monitor.......2001-03-08

I love my e400, only odd problem is the power switch. I'm having problems similar to the one mentioned in Bryan Davis' post. The switch always turns the monitor on...but sometimes doesnt turn it off...

3 power switch problems..Hmm....whats going on here...

other than that....its a-w-e-s-o-m-e.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-02-24

After buying and returning two NEC FE950 monitors due to poor picture quality, I bought this one, and am very happy with my purchase. It worked wonderfully right out of the box without any tweaking. The picture is sharp, clear and uniform across the entire screen, and great for both text and graphics. The packaging is relatively small for a 19" monitor. There is a tiny bit of moire on the shut down screen, but it is not noticeable during normal use. I consulted [web site] before purchasing this monitor, and I was not disappointed.

Sincerely, Ilya Rosenberg

2 out of 5 stars You can do better.......2000-12-23

This is a great monitor, if you don't receive one that is defective. I received two defective Sony CPD-E400 monitors in sequence.

The first monitor had terrible color banding. The display had three distinguishable colors.

The power switch also worked on a random basis. Sometimes it would power up on the first click, other times it would take more. Needless to say, I returned this monitor for a new one.

The second monitor arrived and the display was perfect. It was crisp and clear and I was extremely happy until I tried to turn the monitor off. Guess what, another bad power switch. Except this time, to turn this monitor off I have to pull the power plug.

I've given up on the Sony CPD-E400 monitor. Given its limited feature set, I knew it was overpriced from the beginning. Virtually every other 19 inch monitor on the market is a better value. However, the prospect of a flat screen was like the call of a siren. I was drawn in and I couldn't stop myself.

This monitor is great, IF you get one that works. Roll the dice and hope you don't come up snake eyes. My advice is to buy locally in case you have a problem. Returning a 70-pound monitor via UPS is truly a pain.
