3 out of 5 stars Catching up to Europe.......2002-07-29

My first experience with mobile phones was in Europe, Italy to be specific. It was absolutely painless; buy the phone you want and choose a SIM card provider and you're done, no contracts, no credit check (which was good for me since I didn't have credit in Italy), i.e., no hassle. If you're happy with your provider you pay for more minutes with them when you begin to run low, if you're not you go to the phone store, there are tons of them in Europe, and switch SIM providers; again, no hassle.

When I returned to the US I resisted getting a cell phone because I didn't want to have to mess with "plans". Now that most US servicer providers are offering prepaid service I've decided to give it a try. Yes, it's more expensive but I use my mobile as a convinence/emergency device so that doesn't bother me too much. So far I'm moderately happy with VoiceStream, I would be more happy if (a) I could add prepaid minutes via the Web and (b) if coverage was better at my house.

Hopefully, the US market will leave the "plan" mentality and all the hucksterism it invites behind and move to a European model in the next year or two.

5 out of 5 stars Enforced discipline.......2002-02-08

If you've got a somewhat compulsive behavior towards using the cellular phone, this plan will force you to watch your time. When you get low, it will warn you. Even though its more expensive per minute, you'll be amazed at how few minutes you actually need, and it's certainly less than a pay phone. Take it from someone who's ended up with a $1000 AT&T cellular bill on a $200 plan. Yes, pre-paid seems like a scam, but the real scam is not letting consumers know when they've used too many minutes. If you're like me, its a small price to pay for the peace of mind that you're not getting robbed as you speak.

1 out of 5 stars The money is better spent addressing your credit issues!.......2001-11-23

Typically, a person who utilizes a "prepaid" calling plan is doing so because of certain credit problems, which prevent them from gaining "credit approval" by the merchant. This vendor is taking advantage of customers by basically stating the following, "Mr./Mrs. Customer, since you want to pay us cash up front, we are going to have to charge you more per minute than our more valued customers who pay us 30 days after they use their airtime." Verizon is taking advantage of people with no, little, or poor credit by charging them an excessive premium if they pay in advance. It isn't worth it! Go to each cellular companies website, look at the rates for both their prepaid and billing plans to see for yourself! THIS IS A REAL SLAP IN THE FACE....
