The two important differences are the inclusion of a high-resolution color viewfinder for more realistic visuals while shooting and a built-in light which improves the picture in low-light shooting conditions. The picture stabilizer gets rid of annoying picture shake. Your viewers will appreciate this feature during playback because it will make your recording easier to watch. The GR-AX851U also offers 300x digital zoom. This is ideal for catching action at sporting events or just at home in your backyard. The zoom is a variable-speed zoom triggered by finger pressure with numeric zoom ratio readout in the viewfinder/monitor.

VHS-C format tapes are simply smaller-size VHS tapes. You can play your tapes in any VCR with the included cassette adapter. This feature also allows the manufacturer to make a compact, affordable camcorder. In case you need to travel away from an electrical outlet, the JVC GR-AX851U includes a battery pack with a shooting capability of up to two hours. The camcorder has seven programmable auto exposure modes and digital special effects. The title generator features eight preset messages in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

A time- lapse capability allows you to record at preset intervals to catch slow motion action such as plant growth or cloud movement. You can also record in a special animation mode that creates the illusion of movement for an otherwise stationary scene when you shoot a series of slightly different poses. For editing features, the JVC GR-AX851U offers digital wipes and fades, as well as a black fader and a quick review and retake function. Burns Out After Two Years.......2005-10-19

I purchased an 18" model LCD-1830-R in 2001. It burned out after 2 years. NEC replaced it with a remanufactured model which burned out after 2 years. NEC won't replace this unit.

NEC never disclosed a two-year useful life.

I would never purchase another product made by NEC.

Superb large screen area.For the price you can t beat it........2002-11-18

You get vibrant color, excellent color saturation. I use it a lot to make adjustment to scanned pictures and photography. Extremely detailled, very fast as well. My son once tried it with a Star War game and I was astonished by the 3D and the rapidity of that screen... NEC support service is excellent: I had a defective unit (basically the colors were not right) and without any question, they send me a new unit!

Quality control?.......2002-08-24

I was very happy to find an 18' LCD from NEC. After all I thought NEC is a good name.
I was a little bit disappointed during the setup. I only got a decent picture adjusting it manually. I never had to do that with other brands.
But in summary the picture was good for the price.
But the problems started after around 6 months. The backlight went out. Called tech support. They sent me out a replacement (refurbished unit). TO my surprise it was a defective unit. I had to repeat this 2 more times and still don't have a working unit. I'm waiting for the 4th.

nice monitor... poor quality.......2002-05-02

These monitors looked like a great buy for the price. I figured NEC would be a good safe brand. I bought 8 of them in Dec 2001 and just had a 3rd one go bad as of today. Now NEC says they have a ... backlog on sending out a replacement monitor and the best option is to send it in for repair (about 2 weeks). At least they have a 3 year warranty. I ended up buying a 9th monitor as a spare but now I have two in the shop :( Oh ya, everytime one goes bad it costs me [money] in shipping.

Excellent Product - More LCD for your money.......2002-02-23

I have been using a Sony 20" CRT for a few years. This is an excellent replacement in many ways:

Display Quality: Since the LCD is pefectly flat, the 18" display area is not much of a compromise from my CRT's 19" viewable area. At 1280 x 1024 (which is recommended by NEC as optimal), you can pack a lot of stuff on the screen, yet text stays sharp and images are vivid. Also this LCD is very bright. Compare to my CRT, the NEC LCD causes less eye strain after long viewing hours.

Physical Aspects: This is a well-built monitor but the greatest thing about LCD, which I am sure all Flat panel users know already, is the tremendous saving on your desktop space, especially when you switch from a 20" monster.

Price: There is more LCD for the money with this 18" monitor in my opinion.

I've read about the "noise" issue from other reviews but I have not experienced any at all. It is cool that this monitor has 2 analog VGA inputs, but I'd rather see a digital input instead.

This is truly an excellent product and I really enjoy it.
