Easy to use for MAC users.......2007-01-09

This is the second iOmega minimax I purchased as external and backup storage for my powerbook. The first was a 160GB minimax, which quickly ran full as I started to offload the home videos to from the Powerbook to it. Soon, I needed more storage. The great thing about the minimax and mac is the completely ease of connecting the mac, 160GB and 250GB all together. Just a note, iOmega manuals dont' tell you just how to do it. Stack them minimaxes together, but make sure that the connector on the second minimax that is used is the "squarish" USB 2.0 connector, and connect the "flatter" part to the USB port of the other. Connecting just the "flatter part" using the USB cable on both minimaxes together will not work. If this is the case, the mac will only mount one drive..

I LIKE THIS PRODUCT. IT IS A PERFECT COMPANION TO MY MAC MINI. IT IS VERY WELL DESIGNED AND BUILT, RUGGED AND LOOKS GREAT ON MY DESK. BUT DON'T BOTHER INSTALLING THE "RETROSPECT EXPRESS" BACKUP SOFTWARE CD, I CONSIDER MYSELF ABOVE AVERAGE WHEN IT COMES TO COMPUTER EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE BUT THE BACKUP SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH THIS DRIVE I FOUND TO BE EXCESSIVELY COMPLICATED. I SPENT MORE THAN A WEEK OF LATE EVENINGS TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT AND I NEVER DID TOTALLY FIGURE IT OUT. THEN I HEARD ABOUT "SUPERDUPER", I DOWNLOADED IT FOR FREE FROM THE SHIRT-POCKET WEBSITE AND WITHIN A FEW HOURS I HAD MY ENTIRE HARD DRIVE BACKED UP AND A SCRIPT READY TO DO REGULARLY SCHEDULED BACKUPS. SUPERDUPER IS A GREAT PIECE OF SOFTWARE AND VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND, (IT GUIDES YOU THROUGH EVERY STEP WITH VERY CLEAR EASY TO UNDERSTAND DIRECTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS, VERY APPLE-LIKE IN IT'S EASE OF USE. AS FAR AS THE DRIVE ITSELF I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, A MUST HAVE FOR THE MAC MINI OWNER. Setting up the Iomega MiniMax is a breeze. Simply stack your Mac mini on top of the MiniMax and connect the two using the included FireWire and USB device cables. Plug in the power cable, flick the power switch on the MiniMax, and the drive will automatically mount on your Mac mini's desktop. The MiniMax is bootable via FireWire in OS X, so you can use it as a your startup disk if you'd like. And you may want to, because in terms of speed, the MiniMax is one of the fastest drives for the Mac Mini.

Retrospect Express Software Needs 32X CD for PC's to Install!.......2006-11-07

My Dell laptop only has a 24X CD drive. So iomega tech support said they would e-mail me a link to Iomega® Automatic Backup Pro. Iomega is shipping ONLY the Retrospec Express now and "Iomega is no longer developing Automatic Backup Pro. Although we will continue to support it, we will no longer provide new versions of this software. As hardware and operating systems change and evolve, Iomega will not test or qualify Automatic Backup Pro." So, if and when I go with Vista (IE7), the Backup Pro software may not work with it!

If you have a Mac and you meet all the requirements of the Retrospect software: "Power Macintosh®
Mac OS® 7.1 or later, Mac OS X 10.1.5 through Mac OS X Panther
20MB hard drive space
2X CD-ROM drive
Must meet minimum requirements for your operating system"

OR, if you have a PC (Retrospect will work with a PC) and you meet the requirements: "200Mhz processor or higher

Must meet minimum requirements for your operating system", it may work fine. But, I'll never know as Iomega let me easily return the item to them as I bought it through them. No restocking fees, and the fact that they paid the shipping both ways was the best part of the whole experience. They are a reputable company, but the management needs to get the outsourced supplier of Retrospect Express to make an installation CD that works with a 24X speed CD drive!

Iomega has a "user to user" forum that I strongly suggest you read before buying this particular unit. I bought it because a different Iomega unit is rated #1 in Consumer Reports.

11/15/06 UPDATE - An "Escalation Mgr." from Iomega called me at 7 pm last night due to a new e-mail offer I made to them. She told me that their "Tech Specs" web page for Retrospect Express Software had wrong information on it (32X CD-ROM minimum was incorrect!). She said it does work with 24X CD, but I was shipped (by Iomega's mistake, and a lack of "choice" option on the Iomega website e-commerce function) "One Solutions CD" for a "Mac", and should have been sent one Retrospect Express CD that works for both "Mac" and "PC's". Contrary to this, I was told (as documented in my "Live Chat" courtesy e-mail - great customer service feature): "Me: Can you send me a link to Retrospect Express (that works for a "PC")?
Iomega: No, Because we don't own Retrospect we don't have extra licenses for the software that didn't ship with a drive. I understand that yours did shipped with a version however it is a license for the mac platform.
Me: Is there a Retrospect Express (Version 7.5 or not) CD that you can mail me that is licensed for a PC and will work at 24X CD speed?
Iomega: I can only sell you a New CD. I cant send you one, because you bought a mac version when you bought your drive." and I followed with this: "Me: I just want to correct something you said. I did not "order" a MAC version of the Retrospect Express software as there was no option for me to check off on the iomega website when I ordered it from there.
Iomega: I understand that. What I meant was that, that drive ships with a Mac version of Retrospect. So when you bought the drive you purchased a Mac version of Retrospect."

I must add here that previous to ordering this external hard drive, I phoned Iomega and asked them if this specific unit would work with a "PC", and was told "yes".

I must, also, praise Iomega for having a "written record" of the "Live Chat" conversation, as this proves that what the "Escalation Mgr." told me on the phone last night is in direct contradiction to what "Iomega" told me previously!
