Product Description
The Samsung DVD-M201 DVD player is an affordably priced model that features state-of-the-art composite-video outputs, a slim design, and a dual-laser pickup. The dual-laser design, which employs separate laser diodes for DVD and CD playback, enhances video and audio quality and extends format compatibility to CD-Rs and CD-RWs. The player's Spatializer N-2-2 sound circuit simulates surround sound through your TV or stereo speakers, while its 96-kHz/24-bit audio converters deliver pristine audio quality from DVDs and CDs. The back-panel Toslink optical and RCA coaxial terminals each pass a 96-kHz/24-bit audio stream for use with the latest high-end audio recordings (though be aware that your receiver must be able to decode your 96 kHz recordings if you use a digital connection there). The DVD-M201 includes left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with Dolby Pro Logic receivers and, in case you don't have a receiver yet, TV inputs. This unit also supports both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel formats through its digital outputs for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver or an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC). In the video realm, the M201's 10-bit video DAC ensures precision playback of high-resolution DVD signals. Analog video components are also selected to optimize performance. Composite video output terminals provide the optimum connection between the DVD-M201 and an advanced direct-view or projection TV system. The unit also offers standard component- and S-video outputs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-02-12

I bought the Maxtor not only because of the external storage but also because it has the ability to hook a printer and access it remotely. I thought that would save me from getting another device to hook up my printer to my wireless network. Not until after I did it, did I find out that it does not support printers that are a combination printer, fax, copier. Access it good when it is I am hooked up via an ethernet cable but extremely slow when I am accessing it wirelessly.

1 out of 5 stars Mine seized up after one month.......2007-02-01

I have no idea why but it just stopped working. Maxtor wants me to send it back to them and then after 10 business days they will send me a new one, so between shipping and waiting time i will be out of a drive for three weeks minimum. I have tons of data on this thing so im not comfortable sending it to anyone. I'm gonna buy a buffalo linkstation instead

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this for a Macintosh-based network.......2007-01-20

I read the reviews here and figured this would be a good buy. My chief concern was the noise of the thing, but it turned out to be quite reasonable.

However, the set up has been disasterous. The unit ships with no Mac software (despite claiming Mac compatibility all over the box) and once you do download and install it, it is structured differently to the browser UI. Which is confusing.

Functionality via either desktop client or browser is different and inconsistent, and I was unable to unmount the drive when I didn't want it. The drive shows up in iTunes as a shared library but is inaccessible, and the Drag & Sort feature (fully outlined in the Mac User Guide) is apparently not available on the Mac - eh?

I covered all this with Tech Support, who basically shrugged and said that's the way it is - "perhaps Apple can help". None of this is a deal-breaker by any means (I can still use the drive) but when you're buying a backup device for security of your data, you want to know that it's being handled securely and consistently, no? Big thumbs down from me.

5 out of 5 stars Love This Thing!.......2006-12-05

I've had this for about 6 months now and it's worked flawlessly and has changed the way I manage may home network (4 PCs). I can host my favorites and other files centrally.

It works great with my Second Copy backup software to backup tons of pictures, music, and other documents. I also use it to store and restore disk images of various PCs.

I keep it in the basement, so noise is no problem.

There's probably newer models now, so all I can say is that Maxtor did a great job with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Great concept, not reality yet.......2006-11-23

With great expectations, I set up my Maxtor 500 GB shared storage drive -- hoping it would mean that my wife and I could both save key documents, photos and videos to it from our separate computers on our home network ... and, consequently, share these files, photos and videos -- from anywhere in our house. And my guess is that once wireless home networks are faster (they'll have to be much faster), this dream will become a reality. But right now, it can't happen -- unless you're talking about smaller files. The transfer speeds over a home wireless network are too slow to make this a practical solution -- certainly for large files. What's more, the Maxtor is noisy. Very noisy. The noise wouldn't be a problem if you were just turning on the drive periodicaly (to save or grab something), but if it's to fill the role of readily available shared storage, it has to be on quite a bit.
