Larger than most portable disc players but still far more portable than a laptop, Panasonic's remanufactured DVD-LX8 DVD player offers a 9-inch, 16:9 aspect-ratio (wide) screen with an adjustable "Mono Arm" that broadens the range of available viewing angles, making the player perfect for suddenly bright or suddenly dark airplane cabins or desktop use in an office. The player handles several audio and video formats, including DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM playback, as well as standard and recordable audio CDs, including MP3- and WMA-encoded discs. In addition, its slender chassis holds a built-in rechargeable battery good for about 2.5 hours between charges.

Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LX8's highest-end sound derives from the super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) DVD-Audio format. DVD-Audio software titles include classic music recorded in both multichannel and stereo, though be aware that this model plays discs in stereo only. Most DVD-A discs have compressed Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 surround tracks, however; these can be passed through the unit's digital-audio output to a compatible surround receiver and speaker system.

Audio features also include DTS and Dolby Digital two-channel decoding and multichannel passthrough, built-in stereo speakers, and Panasonic's Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing. Meanwhile, the unit's Advanced Surround Sound (VSS) simulates surround effects from any two speakers or headphones.

Cinema Mode, meanwhile, reduces the detrimental effects of screen glare from ambient light, rendering cinematic colors in pictures that are gentle on the eyes. Further, Cinema Mode improves the visibility of details in dark scenes by automatically adjusting the picture contrast. The DVD-LX8 also offers high-speed, five-step Smooth Motion Scan, which provides crystal-clear fast forward and rewind. At the highest setting, the unit scans at an incredible 200 times faster than normal speed. Panasonic's Dialog Enhancer boosts the center channel volume--where most of the principal dialogue emanates when playing a Dolby Digital 5.1 disc--by 6 dB.

Finally, the player is HighMAT compatible. High-Performance Media Access Technology is a standard codeveloped by Panasonic and Microsoft to improve interoperability for digital media programming between PCs and electronics devices. HighMAT provides an efficient method for arranging digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable media.

The DVD-LX8 measures 9.13 by 1.21 by 6.83 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.

Had signed up for this plan recently. Calls are clear, coverage is good and customer service was impressive. Some sites listed the Cingular customer service and coverage area as below average. I would say this is not true. Initially I signed up for a one-phone plan before changing my mind to go with a family plan. As always Amazon was amazingly helpful and patient in resolving the issue and returning the phone. The Cingular customer service was not a problem either. Without much hassle they cancelled my service and activated a new family service plan. I would highly recommend Cingular for cell phone service and Amazon.com for signing up for it.
