The Basics

• Hard Drive: A welcome size for road warriors, the 100 GB hard drive is definitely above average in size for notebook PCs--great for storing a digital medial library or graphics-intensive presentations--and faster than average at 5400 RPM. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
• Processor: The 1.73 GHz Pentium M 740 (Centrino) processor is in the middle of the speed spectrum for this processor class (December 2005). It is well equipped for office productivity software tasks, from complex spreadsheets to databases. The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also has a large 2 MB L2 cache--which will help speed up your system's performance--and a 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB).
• Memory: The 1 GB (1024 MB) of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) will satisfy most power users, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add more power to handle graphics-intensive presentations and multiple open business productivity applications.
• CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 4x for both DVD+R/RW, 8x DVD-R, 2x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
• Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The A105-S2716 has a 15.4-inch TFT screen with a widescreen 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks and two built-in Harman Kardon speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The A105-S2716 has an integrated Intel Pro/Wireless Network Connection 2200BG LAN, which supports both 802.11b and 802.11g (54g) wireless connections in your office, home, and at Wi-Fi hotspots. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including FireWire:

• 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
• 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
• 1 VGA monitor port
• 1 S-Video out
• 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
• 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
• 5-in-1 memory card reader, compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee AntiVirus, InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, Sonic Solutions RecordNow.

Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 14.2 x 10.5 x 1.45 (WxDxH) and weighs 6 pounds.

1 out of 5 stars Is there a Negative stars rating I can give it?.......2007-01-21

What a piece of junk!!!! I keep expecting it to spontaneously combust!!! I had it less than two months before the video card/screen went out. I took it in and was informed that they had had to replace the video card, cd/dvd writer reader, screen, motherboard, and the fan!!! Huh? The customer service center was a joke. Rude and totally incompetent. When I got there, I asked to speak to the tech who had repaired my laptop because I wanted to understand why so many things had failed. They said that was not possible and to refer to the work order, which of course gave no explanation. So I asked them if they had a lot of problems with Toshibas, the receptionist informed me that yes, they do and (hush hush) they considered them "junk". Wait you're a certified service center for Toshiba? Ummmm, and I am standing there with mine in hand? Uhhhh ok.... so I specifically asked when I picked it up if they had tested it and knew that it now worked. The receptionist looked at me as if I had personally insulted her (as if I had asked if she had considered shaving those wayward chin hairs). She assured me that of course it worked. Got home and sure enough.... it was dead!!! It wouldn't even attempt to boot. I called, told them we had a problem and took it back the next morning. A full day later they call me to tell me its working just fine. Hmmmmm took an entire day for them just to boot it up? I don't think so. I did notice a new repair seal on the bottom, interesting!! Now I have to deal with getting the sound repaired, oh and the cd sounds like a semi when you load a cd in it. So much for listening to music!!

5 out of 5 stars Satellite Notebook.......2007-01-15

I've had this laptop for almost a year now. Being computer illiterate...I can navigate through this thing with no problem. With all of my music and movies and burning dvds and ipod hook up. I can't so enough good things about this laptop. A+

1 out of 5 stars Very poor and late shipping for above laptop.......2007-01-04

1 out of 5 stars Broken Down Again.......2007-01-03

I read reviews and information on several laptops before I bought this computer. My first laptop was a Toshiba and I had no problems with it.

I had this computer 17 days before it crashed and wouldn't boot back up or even turn on. I took it back to Circuit City and since I had it more than 14 days they sent it in to be repaired. It was gone for over a month before I got it back, part of which was UPS couldn't locate the address on the package. I had it back for about 2-3 months when the same thing happened again. I took it to a local shop which replaced the boards, power supply etc. Now it is a few months later and it only works when plugged in and then for only 10-15 minutes. I called Toshiba and was told that customer relations would call me back in a couple of hours. No call so called next day and they told me to hold and they put me into the customer realations que and waited an hour before hanging up and calling again. This time I talked to supervisor who told me 1-5 days. Six days go by no call...call again and talk to supervisor tells me they will call within 24hrs...no call called again Dec 29th promise I will get call Tuesday. Noon Tuesday I get a call and am told I have to take it to be repaired since it is still under warrenty. I told her that the warrenty will be up in a month what do I do the next time it breaks down after a couple of months and I was told to call them and they may decide to replace it then. If I was worried about it then I should buy the extended warrenty for $140.00. I am taking it in for repair but I plan on going though other circles to make sure I do not have to pay to have it repaired in another month. I advised them every time that I was recording our conversations and writing everything down. If I have to I will contact some consumer advocates local or thorough the computer industry to make sure I am not stuck with this lemon.

If it takes 2 weeks for customer relations to get back to me then they must have a high incidence of computers being repaired over and over again. I won't be buying another Toshiba!

1 out of 5 stars Piece of junk !!!! BEWARE!!!!.......2006-12-05

I bought a A105-S2716 in February 2006. It has been in the repair shop 5 times totaling over 2 1/2 months in the shop. I have had to get LCD screen replaced, 2 LCD cables, an inverter and 2 system boards replaced. The parts keep going bad. I contacted Toshiba to make a claim to get my laptop replaced and they denied the claim. I have recently hired an attorney to proceed with a Lemon Law claim but I caution everyone to stay clear of Toshiba, especially the Satellite systems!!!
