It's easy to keep within your budget but get everything you need in a notebook for home, school or home office with the Acer Aspire AS3005WLCi (LX.A5506.028). Affordable and nicely portable at 6.2 pounds, the AS3004 is powered by AMD's 1.8 GHz Sempron 3100+ processor and has a bright 15.4-inch LCD that takes advantage of Acer's CrystalBrite set of display technologies, which provide great color saturation and excellent contrast in all environments. In addition to an integrated 54g wireless LAN, this notebook also includes Acer's SignalUp technology--a super-efficient antenna is built into the case, creating an omni-directional sphere that extends signal range and quality. It also offers a 60 GB hard drive, up to 2 GB of RAM (512 MB installed), a combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, and Windows XP Home edition operating system.

The Basics

Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is the average size for notebook PCs (though larger than found in other notebooks of this size), providing enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.

Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 2.0 GHz Mobile AMD Sempron 3300+ found in this notebook is speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3-D gaming. This processor features AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Technology, which conserves power while also keeping the notebook's decibels to a minimum. It also features up to a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 128 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, 333 MHz) is a decent start for power users. But you'll want to take advantage of the 2 GB capacity for working with today's demanding business productivity applications.

CD/DVD Drive: This notebook includes a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, with 24x write/read and 10x rewrite speed for CDs and 8x read speed for DVDs.
