The 6256i has a sleek clamshell design that's sure to turn heads. The phone's internal 128 x 160 screen supports 65,000 colors, while the full-color supplementary external display shows incoming call information, picture caller ID, signal strength, battery life, current time, and more. An extendable antenna is housed on top of the unit, and there's also an infrared port, as well as a USB port, for synchronizing data. A standard headset jack is provided, as well. The VGA (640 x 480) camera is housed below the external display. Most camera features and onscreen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. The phone also features an MMC memory slot for storing pictures, videos, music, and other media.
<B>Calling Features</B>
The 6256i's phone book stores your contacts for easy retrieval and offers multiple entries per contact. The 6256i also features a speakerphone for easy hands-free talking. Pictures of your friends, as well as specific ringtones, can be used as caller ID alerts. The phone features many built-in polyphonic ringtones and support for MP3-based ringers. Plus, for those times you want to keep things discreet, there's a vibrate ringer mode. And for the ultimate in calling ease, the 6256i supports voice dialing, so you can call your contacts and without ever touching the phone. The voice dialing system also supports voice commands for controlling certain phone functions. And because the 6256i is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total hands-free operation. Lastly, the 6256i's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.
<B>Messaging, Internet, and Tools</B>
The phone's support for multimedia messaging means that text, photos, video, and audio can be sent with ease (Verizon messaging charges apply). When used in combination with the 6256i's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in Web browser for downloads and mobile Web browsing. Verizon's optional Mobile Web 2.0 package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages, and view your favorite Web content on your phone. You can check your e-mail, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings, and find directions to the theater. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier to enter words and text on handsets, is built in to the unit--a plus for mobile e-mail and text messaging users.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the 6256i, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, and a to-do list. On its Web site, Nokia offers a free application for download called PC Suite that facilitates easy synchronization of contacts, calendar events and other data between the phone and your PC using Bluetooth, infrared, or USB.
<B>Imaging and Entertainment</B>
There's plenty of imaging fun built into this phone. The VGA (640 x 480) camera features an LED flash for getting better shots in dark environments. The camera supports video capture as well, and recording time is only limited by the amount of available memory on the expansion card. An integrated FM radio keeps the tunes rolling while you're on the go, and the 6256i's support for games means you can always find something to do while you're waiting for the next train. The phone ships with a few games, and more are downloadable via Verizon Wireless's Get It Now service.

Customer Reviews:
6256i Year-Long User.......2007-02-06
I've been using this phone for over a year, and thought I could better add on the commentary surrounding it. It makes good phone calls, but reception is always dependent on carriers and mobile towers. The battery life is fair for a high featured phone like this. I recommend charging every 2-3 days as another user has suggested. This will cover all you baisc phone needs well. If you are a basic user and the price is right for you, buy it. The phone has a few different cases that can be bought aftermarket, and I disagree that it is an ugly phone. It may not be tiny, but mind is all silver with a gunmetal embellishment on the closed topside. I'd say fashion is hardly a problem.
If you are an advanced user and and the price is a little higher, read on.
I certainly have invested a certain amount of time in the phone. My carrier is Verizon, and that has added certain compounding aspects of learning as well. Sometime last year Verizon stopped carrying the phone becasue therew was not a lot of demand for them. This is a power-user basic phone, while it is not a basic phone like a Razor, it is hardley a full-featured business application mobile device. There are a LOT of features to this phone, but there are also a LOT of accessories that can (my need to) be bought to made every feature work. Learning the phone completely may take you a year, but that does not mean the phone isn't easy to use, just that there are a lot of features.
This phone is on the market because it as a certain amount of MS Operating System components, and capabilities for syncronization with outlook, minus the bulkier aspects of full web browsing and email. (Yes I know you can get some email on the phone, but we're talking abount intentional minimization here). The phone is not a blackberry, and is not meant to be, rather it is made for the middle road users who want a lot of business-related features, without the full-scale business.
First, let me recommend that if you want full capabilty for business applications, you need to get a blackberry, palm treo, or otherwise, as while many applications can be figured out, the phone can be tricky, and using internal folders and networks on the phone can be difficult. If you are a gradutae student (like me), professor, lawyer, MD, this might be a great phone for you. It will sync your calendar and contacts, but I will guide you through the catches there....
Sadly, while the carriers that sell this phone may laud the phone's abilties, they won't know much about helping you with it. Thus, you're now in good company. Sell phone stores are in business to do one thing: Sell Phones. There needs to be a Geek Squad just for phone, as of yet there is not.
Syncronization: While Bluetooth Syncronization is possible, I honestly can't speak for it because I don't have one yet. I will be buying a Jabra JX-10, but don't have it yet.
*You will need is a data cable. This is should be standard practice for advanced users (like PC users), as Bluetooth (and laptops) are not always reliable. Buy a Nokia DKU-2. You can find them at numerous places aftermarket and it should not cost you $50 as one commenter lamented in these reviews.
*I recommend against trying to buy a full-featured charger/USB cable as I did. I bought a Mobile Action MA-8632C. For most of the last year I've been unable to access my phone as I have a couple of Tosiba Laptops due to a firewall problem I was unable to resolve. I now have been able to access my phone on my PC with all the mobile action software and am happy.
*Verizon blocks users from using any personal songs as ringtones. The downloadable songs are digitized and hoky. There is a fix to this however. Nokia has a division in San Diego, CA, which created a proprietary program called "Nokia Diego", which some mobile phone companies use to program phones. Is is not available in stores, and you must pay your dues in hacker forums to find the program. Google it. Installing is tricky, and every computer is different in this regard. Needless to say, this program will allow you to change your PRI file in your phone, reconfigure settings, JAVA script for program applications, and much, much more. Basically, if you know what you're doing, you can make the phone work anywhere. If you really know what you're doing you can reconfigure your telephone signal as a dial-up modem and only use standard calling minutes (off-peak being free), but you really need to know a lot of stuff to do that. Just know it's possible. BUY an extended warranty, and if using Diego, always save a PRI file before doing a thing. Know what you're doing here, because you can screw-up and void your warranty.
*Verizon folks have mentioned the "Get it Now" feature, which bites. My advice: Get it yourself, and upload it. Yet, you'll quickly find limited space on the phone by itself. Thus you'll need to buy a RS-MMC card which fits underneath the battery on the phone. When I bought my phone in January 2006, the guy told me about it, but had no idea where to get it or which card it was (hence the cluelessness of phone distributors). You can find a few of your needs on the link below. (Eliminate spaces)
www . daydeal . com /home.php?cat=1676
Ringtones: Okay so lets say your personal choice of ringtones is unencumbered. Realize that you will only be able assign 6 personal ringtones of your own choosing and input: 5 for individual caller groups and one as a default (you have to assign personal contacts to caller groups to make this work). Still though, that's okay, how many ringtones do you need. You additionally have the choice of about 22 pre-set ringtones (digital sounding) that you don't modify
The phone has a AM/FM radio option, but users will quickly find they need an enhancement other than the standard antennae. This may be met by having a bluetooth setup, but maybe not. What most users don't know is there is a little known rubber patch on the rear of the phone (not the headphone/earpiece cover) that takes a special cable adapter, and allows dramatic increase in reception for Radio and standard reception. Have you ever been in an area without a tower but ready access to a cablebox? Check this out: (Eliminate spaces)

There are a number of advances earpieces on the market to support music playback and bluetooth capability. I like Jabra, but I must state that not all earpieces work well with this phone. I've tried some cheapies without success. I find the loudspeaker open to be awesome, and in truth ample for most users needs. If you want to look cool though - go with the JX-10 for bluetooth.
If you're looking for music playback, there are better options.
The lighter and corded toggle headset is here:
The BT620s are definitely awesome, but I need to discuss a potential limitation of the 6256i: Music storage arrangements. Once you have utilized the stoage space on your regular memory, you must store additional music/files on the drive connected to the RS-MMC card. However, just yet I have not figured out how to play from one file to another without individual selection. In fact, I don't know if it's possible, but I'll find out and post a follow-up. I believe it is possible is the Music Folder that is part of the Phone's regular memory, but because that memory selection is so limited, it doesn't do you much good.
Images: This is where the phone excels. Upload your favoriate gif's to either your mini display (outer shell) or inner shell, and you have a trick personal graphic running all the the time. That's a lot of fun.
Camera: Sucks, but it's a phone. You can turn the flash on in video mode and have a powerful LED flashlight without recording video. (Warning: will drain the battery).
* I bought a RS-MMC card (1 GB) at cellphoneshop.net, as well as a mechanical winding mechanism to charge Nokia phones in areas where your juice runs down and there is no power source. I backcountry ski and this is a very good thing to have.
Here's a good carrying case:

*Syncing: The most important feature of all. First let me emphasize the minimization of mobile phone programs. I use Mobile Action Sync that came with my driver, and Nokia Diego. That's it. The only other program I might recommend is MobiMB, but I recommend against using any of the free Nokia PC suite software, it will only mess with eveything else. Got a Nokia Phone? DON'T INSTALL PC SUITE!
*Syncing with Outlook Calendar: problem here is with recurring dates, the phone's MS OSX will not understand reoccuring dates for your phone's calendar from Outlook.
*Syncing with Outlook Contacts: OSX will not understand subfolders for telephone contacts, so all your contacts need to be in one place. (Suggestion: export an outlook file to a .csv file, then import that file to your phone through a data mapper like that available in the Mobile Action Program). I've over 500 contacts in my phone.
Ps: Someone said you can't assign pictures to contacts, they're just plain wrong about that, but you assign the picture through searching it out through the contact itself, not visa versa.
I am one to find the right device for the right task. In this regard the phone is great for me. However, it is not a perfect arrangement and has certain shortfalls.
I believe there is a newer Nokia phone of similar pricing that has corrected the few problems. However, this phone can do a lot for the user who wants to take the time. I'll be using this phone for a good time to come.
Excercising?: Buy an ipod shuffle, don't use your phone. Want a blackberry, buy a blackberry. Want a phone to listen to music on occasionally?: This might do it but the user utility is not the best for that. Overall, this phone gets 4/5 stars from me.
Regards,
Brent.
Best phone i ever had.......2006-11-02
this is my 10th phone and 100% the best. I'm using this phone for 15 month now and not think about getting something new. It has everything even 1 year later.
Only one BIG MINUS in this phone is VERIZON blocked all great features (java, mp3) and they are pushing to buy from them.
Don't buy this phone.......2006-08-11
I purchased this phone about 6 weeks ago. Worked for 3 days and died. Took it back, got it replaced. Worked for about a week and died. Took it back got it replaced. The day I got the 3rd phone I took it home and tried to download music from my computer. Music downloaded but would not play. Phone said it could not play that format. I converted music to mp3 format downloaded and it still would not play. I have tried every format that their is and the music downloads but will still not play. I called Nokia and they said to call Cellular South where I have my cell service because some providers block you from playing the formats. I did this and the lady I talked with on the phone said the phone was defective and I need to take it back to Cellular South and have it replaced. I told the lady that this was the 3rd phone I was having to take back and she said that she had the same model phone and she had to take hers back 9 times before she got one that worked right.
I took my phone back yesterday to Cellular South and the technician that looked at my phone said that it only played the mp3 format. I told him I had converted to the mp3 format and it still would not play, and that I had converted to every format that their is and none of them would play. He took my phone again left, came back and asked if I used Windows Media Player to download. I said yes, and he said that it would not work that way, that I had to download directly from the internet. I told him I had done that and it still would not work. I also told him that I downloaded via bluetooth and thought maybe that was the problem so I purchased the cable from Nokia which cost me another $50.00 dollars and tried to download like that and the phone still would not play. Then he sent me to a manager. The manager took my phone I told her the same story and she left with it, finally came back and now tells me that my phone had been wet and that I would have to buy a new phone. I explained to her that the phone had not been wet in any way, that it did not work the day that I got it, and that I had been trying for 3 weeks different ways to get it to work. She said that was 2 bad the phone had been wet and I would have to purchase a new one. I talked with the second manager and she said the same thing. I asked to speak to her supervisor and she was conveniently on vacation. I left with no results. As far as I am concerned this phone is a piece of junk and I would not buy it again. Okay the features are great but they are only great if the phone works and the features work. I would not recommend this phone to anyone unless you want alot of headaches, and you will have to spend more money to replace the phone, because once they can't figure out what is wrong, and they do not want to replace our phone they come up with the wet moisture thing and tell you that that is not covered under warranty. If this phone is that pourly manufactured it should be pulled off of the market and people that have purchased this phone should be given the option to choose another phone or given their money back. Don't be stupid and buy this phone. I would not even give it a 1 star rating.
Poor Reception.......2006-05-30
I owned a Nokia 3589 for 2+ years and I loved it - great reception and hardly any dropped calls. So I figured a flip Nokia tri-mode phone would be great. Liked that it has Bluetooth capability, but after using this phone for a week, had so many dropped calls and reception issues that I'm taking it back to Circuit City.
Will either get the Nokia 6236 or Moto E815 (altho neither has AMPS connectivity - oh well).
solid phone.......2006-04-07
I really like this phone a lot. I got it for $139 dollars with a 2 year contract at Surewest which includes unlimited minutes and text, so thats awesome. As for the phone, its great, lots of extras. The only thing is it gets a little hot after a little while but i think all phones do that. so I guess this is more like 4.5 stars. The people that come on here and say it wouldnt power up or whatever, i think thats just bad luck or they didnt treat their phone very well. Very cool phone...although i am wondering about the flip up part being a bit heavier than the base. Oh well. Its all good.
