Learn more about the 6236i from Verizon Wireless.

Design
This sweet looking candybar phone has all the Scandinavian style you could ask for. Simple yet sophisticated, the phone features a 128 x 128 color display that supports 65,000 colors. A five-way control button below the display controls most of the phone's functions and features, and the phone's VGA camera unit is housed on the rear of the case. USB and charging are handled by a port on the bottom of the phone, and there's a standard headset jack provided, as well. In addition to USB, the phone sports an infrared port for data synchronization. The 6236i uses an internal antenna--nothing to snag or break off.

Calling Features
The 6236i's phone book can hold up to 500 contacts with multiple entries per contact. It also features a speakerphone for easy handsfree talking. Pictures of your friends can be used as caller ID alerts and the phone features many built-in polyphonic ringtones, as well as support for MP3-based ringers. Plus, for those times you want to keep things discreet, there's also a vibrate ringer mode. And for the ultimate in calling ease, the 6236i supports voice dialing, so you can call your contacts and without ever touching the phone. Plus, the 6236i's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The phone's support for multimedia messaging means that text, photos, video, and audio can be sent with ease (Verizon messaging charges apply). When used in combination with the 6236i's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in Web browser for downloads and mobile Web browsing. Verizon's optional Mobile Web 2.0 package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite Web content on your phone. You can check your e-mail, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings, and find directions to the theater. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier to enter words and text on handsets, is built in to the unit--a plus for mobile e-mail and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the 6236i, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, and a to-do list. On its Web site, Nokia offers a free application for download called PC Suite that facilitates easy synchronization of contacts, calendar events and other data between the phone and your PC.

Imaging and Entertainment
There's plenty of imaging fun built into this phone. The VGA (640 x 480) camera features a self timer so you can be in your shots, too. There's also a night mode for getting better shots in dark environments. The camera supports video capture as well--up to 2.5 minutes of it. An integrated FM radio keeps the tunes rolling while you're on the go, and the 6236i's support for games means you can always find something to do while you're waiting for the next train. The phone ships with a few games, and more are downloadable via Verizon Wireless's Get It Now service.

Vital Statistics
The Nokia 6236i weighs 3.46 ounces and measures 4.15 by 1.67 by .71 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time and up to 288 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 850/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to old Nokia standards.......2007-03-30

Based on the reviews online and the reccomendation from a Nokia salesperson, I bought this phone for me and my husband. This phone is terrible. The battery life is short and I lose receptiong in NYC often. Also my calls are often dropped. I tried resetting the phone by dialing customer solutions (*228) but I sill cannot make or get dropped calls with full reception. I charge the phone for hours and it can still go from full battery to one bar. I have been using Nokia cell phones since 1997. I thought this phone would be as great as my previous Nokias. I was wrong. Try another phone like a Samsung. My friends who also have Verizon say they do not expereince the same problems as I do which makes me think it is the phone. But I have been able to make calls from the subway train a couple of times (I think verizon has some lines down in the subway tunnels). Not really important feature for me.

4 out of 5 stars great phone.......2007-03-22

im gonna keep this kinda short. i agree with all the great reviews of this phone, i'v had it just about a year and a half. i got it when it was brand new. one down side to the phone as others have said is there are really no acessories for this model. i've been waiting 1.5 years for something but still nothing really great out there. and on the rare occasion when some one calls me my phone has a dull muted ring that isn't even a ring tone option in the phone, and it will continue to ring til u turn it off. when i go to answer the phone i cant talk to the person because its still ringing, another glitch i'v had is my phone sometimes freezes up. once again it works fine when u turn it off and back on. other than that its got great battery life, great reception everywhere i go.

4 out of 5 stars Good camera for a cheap phone.......2007-03-22

I bought this phone because I hate flip-phones and this was the only one I could find at the verizon store with a color screen and camera. I was shocked to find that it takes better pitures then some more expensive models. The only thing I cant't stand is verizon's "get it now" option which strips the phone of any games nokia may have put on it and forces you to purchase them separately.

5 out of 5 stars mp3 ringtones--sort of / no lens cover for the camera.......2006-11-16

I'm a Nokia fan and a Verizon subscriber. I've had a bunch of phones over the years--all Nokias. I held off upgrading until Verizon made this model available because it contained in one package a camera, an FM radio, and mp3 ringtones. I like this phone, hence the 5 stars.

Others have reviewed many of its features. I'll add five comments:

(1) As the advertising says, it has mp3 ringtone capability. However, due to built-in Digital Rights Management, one can't simply upload one's favorite mp3 and use it as a ringtone.

(2) The camera lens does not have a lens cover. I keep my phone in a case, but I might worry about scratching if it were bouncing around in a knapsack or bag.

(3) One nice feature about Nokias is that menu choices can be selected by drilling down quickly by pressing Menu and then a keypad sequence, which is convenient for often used options. For example, the timed Meeting setting might be chosen by pressing Menu 9,1,3,3. However, the 6236i has so many options (exceeding 9 on some pages) that a leading 0 is sometimes necessary. Thus, on the 6236i, the sequence is Menu 9,01,3,3. That leading 0 drove me crazy until I figured it out!

(4) The 6236i also has a GoTo option on the main screen allowing quick access to 5 features of the owner's choosing. I use mine for Inbox, Camera, Radio, Normal mode, Meeting mode.

(5) Excellent reception. I live in an area where reception is spotty. (The town will not let towers proliferate.) I get 2 or 3 bars and no dropped calls where others in my household have to walk around and sometimes leave the house to get sufficient signal strength.

4 out of 5 stars Long Term Reliability.......2006-10-16

Bought this phone model back in December '05. Had to return it after a couple of days because it would turn itself off several times a day. But since then, it has turned out to be a most reliable and useable phone.

Call quality is good, don't have trouble with dropped calls. The earphone clarity is also good, I've never had trouble hearing callers, and they've always been able to understand me.

The little toggle button that controls most functions takes a bit getting used to, as it can be kind of hard to use side to side (easier up/down). The Nokia UI is very easy to use and there are a lot of nice functions on this phone.

Even though I am currently eligible for an early upgrade, there is not much in Verizon's current phone lineup that might make me jump up and replace the 6236i in the very near future. Maybe a little later when some of their other phones' prices drop a bit ......
