The A950's internal 176 x 220 screen sports a whopping 262,000 colors for viewing high-resolution video and games. The full-color, supplementary external display shows incoming call information, picture caller ID, signal strength, battery life, current time and more. Controls for the phone's MP3 player are placed below the external display and they include a handy rotating jog wheel for selecting tracks quickly. Meanwhile, the phone's camera is housed above the external display. The A950's antenna is housed internally -- nothing to snag or break off, and there's a TransFlash/microSD memory slot for storing pictures, videos, music and other media. A standard 2.5mm stereo headset jack is present, as is a USB port for synchronizing data. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad.
Calling Features
The A950 boasts powerful calling functions, like an integrated speakerphone that makes it easy to converse without touching the handset-- a big plus for car users. Meanwhile, voice dialing makes it easy to call contacts by simply saying their names. And because the A950 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.
The A950's internal memory can hold up to 500 contacts for quick access to email addresses and phone numbers. The phone lets you easily assign pictures to your most common callers. In addition to vibrating alerts, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and more ringtones can be downloaded from Verizon's Get It Now service. The A950's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The phone's support for multimedia messaging means that text, photos, video and audio can be sent with ease (Verizon messaging charges apply). When used in combination with the A950's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. Verizon's optional Mobile Web 2.0 package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can check your e-mail, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, the A950 is fully compatible with Verizon's V Cast service. With V Cast, you can download and stream high-quality video. Need news and weather? Get the latest Accuweather forecast delivered right to your handset, or stream CNN news headlines. ESPN sports updates, entertainment news from E!, and even Sesame Street content for the kids, are all available. V Cast also serves as a portal for enhanced 3D games. Have more fun with a new breed of realistic games.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the A950 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar and an alarm clock.
Imaging and Entertainment
Plenty of good times are built right into this handset, and that fun is expandable thanks to the A950's TransFlash/MicroSD memory slot. The phone's 1.3 megapixel camera with flash makes getting great shots easy. As mentioned, it's also designed to capture high-quality video. Video capture length is only limited by the amount of available flash memory.
And don't forget that the A950 makes a great MP3 player; load up your favorite tunes and use the phone as a portable jukebox. The phone also supports V Cast 3D games, as well as other 2D-based games, which are available from Verizon's Get It Now service.

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Choppy Sound.......2007-03-26
I've had this phone for a few months now. Verizon. On the plus side, it works with the Reliance Network in India with very good reception. Here in the US, the sound is usually somewhat choppy. I think I can live with it till the contract is up, and then I'll surely replace it. The leather cover, which also has a belt clip, wants to keep coming off.
it's ok.......2007-02-17
It's definitely not the best phone on the market, but it's never dropped a call yet. It's good as a phone and a camera, but that's it. It has horrible battery life so I'm luck to get a day out of it (I only use it about 3 times a day). I've completely given up on the mp3 function - the sound quality is horrible and it's too confusing (you need to be a certified genius to operate this thing). The speakerphone is bad too - the best I can describe it is, it souds like an out of rage radio station (alot of static and constantly breaking up).
The camera on it is surprisingly good for a cell phone though. I went to a car show a little while ago and my digital camera died on me so I swithed over to my phone. After transferring the pictures to my computer, I was surprised to find that the pictures from this phone were the same quality as thos from my camera (kodak easyshare cx6230 in case your wondering).
I wouldn't entirely reccomend this phone, but you could still do worse.
Works great for me.......2006-12-27
It seems that people have had quite varying experiences with this model of phone and associated software. My experience has been that it has good reception in most locations (except way out in the country where nobody else gets a signal either), it's durable, and it's easy to use. As others have said, it's got a good camera for a cell phone and the sound is very clear. I haven't had any problems with mine, and I respectfully suggest to others that before they give it a bad rating, they try getting a replacement from their provider. It seems to be a common thing for phones to not work properly right out of the box. I had to get my first phone (not my a950) replaced three times before I got one that worked! But that doesn't change the fact that the one that worked did was pretty good. Maybe that's the situation for the people giving it such bad reviews. If anything, the worst part of it is the music player. While it sounds fine, the program to play music just isn't very good. Creating a playlist is time consuming and having to sync your files in WMA format means that it takes forever to load a new cd on your phone if you don't have a super-fast computer. And you can't manage the music from your computer while you're connected; it's basically just designed to add or delete files. Managing it from the phone is tedious what with the tiny keys and menus.
If you never intend to use it as a music player, it's a fine phone. This is the phone you get if you want an mp3 player but don't want to buy one.
worst phone.......2006-12-10
this has to be the worst phone i have ever owned in my life!!! reception is horrible, speakerphone is constantly distant sounding, i keep hearing a high pitch noise like when you get your hearing tested whenever im on it, dropping calls like no tomorrow, where w/ prior phones through verizon i never have, all they say is keep updating the phone well guess what that dont work!!!! do not waste a cent for this piece of junk. all you will want to do is through it through a window!!! trust me!!! didnt even have it close to a yr now i have to shell out way more money to actually be able to have a phone again, and dont ever do a 2yr to get stuck w/ garbage!...
Don't understand all these problems..........2006-11-08
I've read these reviews and though I believe these things are happening to these folks, my experience has been the opposite.
I've had my phone for three months now and coulldn't be happier I'll jump to a list format -
PROS
- Simply awesome reception. I live in Vermont (pretty rural) and have never lost a call.
- Music player rocks. I loaded the Windows Media 10 software that came with the Music Package (purchased seperately) and simply started copying my CD's to the library. Then I created a playlist that I wanted to send to the Samsung , connected the USB cable, had Windows Media 10 recognize the Samung device, and sent the music on its way. The software automatically converted the files to .wma. I did purchase a 512M card on sale for $25 at Circuit City.
- Durability is unsurpassed. I've dropped this so many times without a single nick or problem (including a drop on the treadmill while running at the gym that sent it off the back wall at 10 MPH!)
- Voice clarity is terrific
- Bluetooth headset works great, people can't even tell I'm on a headset.
CONS
- No default on the music player to "Play All" and "Shuffle". Both settings need to be set everytime you turn the music on if you want them.
- Earbuds w/answer button didn't produce the best sound. I found if I pushed the buds in with my hands it greatly improved the sound but the buds wouldn't stay in that far.
- I broke one of the wires to an earbud (caught the wire on a machine at the gym). Not sure if this should have been sturdier.
- When someone leaves you a message you need to not only clear the voice message but also the "missed call" icon.
- If you enter names in the address book as "Joe Smith" the capital letter of the second word will not automatically capitalize. This means you need to choose to capitalize the letter, type the letter, then choose to NOT capitalize the 2nd letter. No biggie - just a pain.
- Keypad lighting turns off after 5 seconds, can be kind of tough at night. This might be a setting I just need to fix.
