Amazon.com Product Description
The DVR5100 provides the best of both worlds in one simple, compact package: a full-featured, progressive-scan DVD player and CD player to handle movies and music--including MP3 files stored on CD-R or CD-RW--with a built-in four-head, hi-fi, stereo VCR to play an existing library of videocassettes and to tape new programs. You can even watch a DVD or listen to a CD while recording a TV show. With this model, an advanced Go-Port enables connectivity with PCs and other networked components.
Whether you have an HDTV or you're in "someday" mode, the DVR5100 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
This model's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, while 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing is in EP (extended-play) mode. Route the stereo output to an AV receiver and you can enjoy four-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic mixes from TV and Dolby-encoded cassettes. Virtual 3D simulates a surround-sound effect through any existing pair of speakers.
Other features include one-touch copying from DVD to VHS (though it won't copy Macrovision-protected discs), Commercial Advance and Movie Advance, complete program record (automatically adjusts tape speed to ensure the recording of a complete program), auto clock set, and channel search. A convenient child lock effectively toddler-proofs the front panel. Included in the box are a full-function multibrand remote control with glow-in-the-dark keys (operates the DVD-VCR and your TV), two 1.5V AA batteries, a user's manual, a quick-reference guide, and a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect.

Zero problems so far.......2007-05-27
I first got the 22' widescreen.. HATED IT! It stretched windows and it didnt matter what resolution I used. This one, is just perfect. It is a big difference over a 19' Samsung LCD that I had (never a problem with it for years and still works great) as in size even though its a 20.1. This one has ZERO dead pixels. Colors are amazing. Brighness needs to be turned down so plenty of that. Theres a little bit of blacklight bleed on a black background when your watching movies but not enough to bother you. It's not a widescreen, but it kinda is shaped like one cause of its size. But yet you dont have to put up with the stretched picture look. Trust me I read reviews for weeks on others and I picked this one out of the rest.. BUY IT!
Nice monitor from Samsung - as always........2007-05-07
Own it for about two months - very nice monitor.
I had an old 15" from Samsung - and the new monitor is way much better - nice colors, better picture, very sharp.
Very nice monitor.......2007-03-19
The first monitor I got I had to send back because it was defective. It was manufactured Jan 2007 and it would shut down to a black screen or the screen would blink and would not come out of it. I read reviews of others having the same problem but they were manufactured during the middle of 2006. Any way the only problem was the shutting down NO dead pixels.
I was going to get a different monitor after returning this one, but AMAZON had already sent out a replacement before I could request a refund. I decided to take a chance on the replacement and so far so good. It been almost a month and no problems. The replacement does have one stuck/dead pixel but it is ro see. You have to be looking for it to see it.
So far I'm pleased with the monitor.
Broken after 7 months.......2007-03-17
I've had this monitor for 7 months, and until now, had very few problems. I've seen the same problems other reviewers had with their DVI -- the screen would flicker to black periodically. I thought it was that my video card couldn't handle the output, so I switched to analog mode, and all was good.
Until recently. The bottom two-thirds of the screen inexplicably decided to change its refresh rate from the normal 5ms to something really slow (more like 5 seconds). The top third of the screen is still OK.
I say it's a slow refresh rate because if you leave a static image (like this page) alone for a few seconds, you can actually read the page. It's still like you're looking through a white filter because the colors aren't as crisp as the top third of the screen, but you can still see colors. If you then decide to scroll the page, the screen will "smear" the text and images, until you stop scrolling. After a few seconds, the screen will become legible again (but only because nothing on the screen is changing).
If you think it's something wrong with my PC, know that even without connecting the monitor to anything else, when you turn it on, the backlight turns on and the bottom 2/3 of the screen is an ugly gray for about 0.5 seconds. It then melts to an almost-black (as the LCD pixels turn on to block the backlight) but never gets to the pure black to match the top third of the screen. When the on-screen notice comes on to tell me that I didn't connect a video cable, it's very blurry (due to the slow refresh) until it moves to the upper third of the screen.
The weird thing is that the monitor died so abruptly. It was working just fine, then all of a sudden, while it was on, the bottom two-thirds decided to go on a break. Another weird thing is that it's not a gradual change from the "good" area of the screen to the "bad" area. If you've ever seen those Sony Trinitron monitors with the two thin cables running horizontally, it's as if everything above that top cable is fine, but everything below it has that slow refresh rate.
Like the rest of the folks, I need to place a $1000 hold on my credit card if I want a refurbished replacement. I hope that replacement doesn't also die on me.
One comforting fact is that the refurbished replacement monitor will inherit the rest of my 3-year warranty. But if the other reviewers experiences are any indication, the replacement will suffer similar problems.
Beautiful Picture.......2007-03-03
My ten year old 19" CRT monitor started having problems, so it was time to upgrade to a flat panel. I really like the 1600x1200 resolution with large fonts I used with my CRT, so this monitor was a logical option.
It is one of the monitors offered by Alienware for their gaming PC's so that was a good recommendation. I was a little put off by the reviews here on Amazon that talked about problems, but I went ahead and ordered through Amazon.
If I had to do it again, I might get it locally so it would be easier to return if there was a problem. I'm sure there are some units with problems as indicated by the reviews on this site. Fortunately my monitor works perfectly.
I've had it about a week now and its performance is fantastic. It works in digital mode with my year 2000 DELL PC with a nVidia GEFORCE 5900XT graphics card I upgraded to 2 years ago. Even in analog mode the display looks great.
I tried the Falcon 4.0 Allied Force flight simulator and the performance was excellent.
The adjustability of the screen is superb. The ability to raise and lower the screen is very useful. The base is very solid when making these adjustments.
The only issue I've run into was with the software provided that automatically rotates the screen display when rotating the monitor. Even with the latest driver for my graphics card, the software said it wasn't compatible. It is not a big deal for me since I'm so used to reading a 4x3 screen, that the portrait mode seems strange to me anyway. With 1200 vertical pixels, there is plenty of screen to read in normal mode. I can go to the driver pages and rotate the screen manually, so if I really need that mode I can get it.
