Amazon.com Product Description
Full-featured home entertainment systems don't get much more affordable or much more fun than the Philip MX6050D. The system includes a Dolby Digital/DTS-capable surround sound receiver with an integrated single-disc-DVD/CD player, as well as 4 compact satellite speakers, a 5-driver slim center speaker, and a dedicated low-frequency subwoofer for full throttle theater excitement. The DVD drive plays DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and VCD/SVCD, in addition to MP3 CDs and JPEG image CDs.

Video features include picture zoom, multi-angle viewing, and parental lock. The system's 80-watts-per-channel receiver (with 100 watts driving the system's 8-inch passive subwoofer) delivers a total of 500 watts, and its Class D amplifier was designed with special attention to the extreme dynamics possible in DVD movie presentations. A Class D Amplifier is a "switching" amplifier that converts a low-level, analog, audio input signal into a high power, digital output for enhanced digital sound quality.

The MX6050D's four 2-way satellite speakers and center-channel speaker are acoustically designed to match the tonal characteristics of the receiver. Front left, right, and center speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent any interference with your TV's image. The sixth speaker is a passive subwoofer with a twin-port bass tube that enhances the speaker's delivery by letting it move more air at carefully tuned frequencies. The tuner offers 40 FM/AM presets.

The receiver features 2 analog-audio inputs and one analog-audio output, along with a coaxial digital-audio output (great for exporting audio to a CD or minidisc recorder). Three video outputs (including the primary monitor output) accommodate a range of televisions, from sets with standard composite-video terminals to sets offering high-resolution component-video inputs.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the MX6050D is equipped to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Philips's Cinema Center Speaker magnifies your movies while ensuring that what you hear is both natural and realistic. Cinema Center Speaker delivers spacious sound and brings a wider sweet spot through no less than 5 drivers positioned at different angles. These drivers give more depth in sound by clearly distinguishing front from background sound and action from dialogue so even the slightest sound detail will not pass by unnoticed.

Color-coded connectors provide a simple and user-friendly way to connect the speakers and subwoofer to the center unit of the home entertainment system simply by plugging the connectors in the matching colored-interface at the rear of the center unit.

What's in the Box
DVD player/integrated surround amplifier, 5 satellite speakers, a passive subwoofer (powered by DVD/amplifier unit), a remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, an FM wire antenna, an AM loop antenna, speaker brackets and screws, all requisite cabling.

Amazon.com Product Description

A great choice for mobile professionals who like to play as hard as they work, the Acer Aspire 5672 (AS5672WLMi) is a multimedia powerhouse with S-Video output and FireWire connectivity for camcorders and digital audio players. It also enables easy VVoIP (voice and video over IP) via the integrated 1.3 megapixel CMOS camera with 225-degree rotation. The AS5672 has a bright 15.4-inch LCD that takes advantage of Acer's CrystalBrite set of display technologies, which provide great color saturation and excellent contrast in all environments. In addition to an integrated 54g wireless LAN, this notebook also includes Acer's SignalUp technology--a super-efficient antenna is built into the case, creating an omni-directional sphere that extends signal range and quality.

It's powered by Intel's new, groundbreaking processor--the powerful Core Duo T2300--which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and a more efficient power consumption. The dual execution core T2300 has a 1.67 GHz processor speed and 2 MB L2 cache. Other hardware features include a 120 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM, multi-format DVD burner (with DVD-RAM capability), tri-mode wi-fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g), Bluetooth wireless connectivity, gigabit Ethernet LAN, 5-in-1 memory card reader, and Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: The 120 GB hard drive (a fast 5400 RPM) is above average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library.
• Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2300 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset, and it has a 1.67 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3D and 2D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.

• Memory: The AS5672 maxes out its 2 GB RAM capacity with 2 GB of PC4200 DDR2 RAM (2 x 1 GB), with a fast 533 MHz speed. You'll enjoy quick, nimble response throughout your applications and fast processing in demanding business productivity applications. It's also a plus for immersive 3D gaming and video viewing and editing.
• CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 3x DVD-RAM, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 8x DVD-ROM, 24x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 24x CD-ROM speeds.
• Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook features an 88-key keyboard with inverted T cursor layout, embedded numeric keypad, hotkey controls, international language support, and 2.5mm minimum key travel. The touchpad has a four-way scroll button.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 15.4-inch WXGA LCD has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Video is powered by the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics card, which features 128 MB of dedicated video memory for an impressively high screen resolution. Accelerate through tasks and entertainment with a native x16-lane PCI Express bus interface, pumping data through 4 pixel shader pipelines and 2 vertex processors. Interact with realistic 3D characters and scenes with full DirectX 9 Shader Model 3.0 support. And ATI's PowerPlay 6.0 technology helps to maximize battery life for an extended on-the-move visual experience.

Acer's CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments. It's great for sophisticated professional applications, photo manipulation, and immersive 3D games.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The AS5672 features an integrated PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also offers Acer's SignalUp technology for enhanced antenna efficiency. With the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs. You get a very good offering of multimedia connectivity options, including:

• 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
• 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
• 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (one Type II card, 32-bit PC CardBus architecture)
• Stereo headphones/speakers/line-out with SPDIF support
• Microphone/line-in
• 1 DVI-D video port (for connecting to flat panel, high-definition monitors and televisions)
• 1 VGA monitor port
• 1 S-Video out
• 1 fast infrared (IR)
• 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, XD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes with the following selection of preloaded software titles: Acer eManager, Acer GridVista, Acer Launch Manager, Adobe Acrobat Reader, CyberLink PowerDVD, Norton AntiVirus, NTI CD-Maker.

Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 14.3 x 10.8 x 1.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 6.6 pounds.

Power
The eight-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 3.5 hours of battery life (depending on usage). You'll get an 80 percent charge with one hour of charging. It takes 2 hours for a full charge with power off; 2.5 hours with power on.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money and performance!.......2006-08-13

Good:

- Crystal clear wide screen display that has a fast response time so there are no ghosting effects with DVD playback.
- 2Gb of fast ram. You normally have to fork out truckloads of dollars for this!
- Windows XP Pro and Vista ready. XP Pro is the best OS at present.
- Can run 3D games at respectable levels of detail. Great if you are stuck in a hotel and need to play on something.
- Loads of USB ports. Connect your printer, camera and other gadgets with ease.
- Amazing sound quality.
- Microphone and Headphone ports at the front.
- Warehouse scale hard disk at 120Gb of space!
- Burn DVDs and CDs easily.
- Very clear, high resolution webcam.
- It looks smart.
- Battery time is 3+ hours.
- Has all the other essential ports such as Network, Firewire etc.

Bad:

- Gets a little warm during use. You can feel gentle wafts of heat rising through the keys to your fingertips. This hasn't been warm enough to upset me or my wife.
- A bit heavy, but it's so packed full of technology, it's a miracle that it doesn't feel like lead!
- You need a lot of patience when you start it the first time. Have a blank DVD ready to create the emergency repair disk. The system sets itself up automatically the first time you run. Leave a good half an hour at least for this.
- Not much documentation. I haven't needed it, but some people may feel a little uncomfortable without a complete instruction manual. You can download all the details you need from Acer's website anyway.

Overall:

Buy it! Acer have thought very hard about what a good all-rounder notebook user needs. The bad points are minor in comparison to the good points. When you run it for the first time, it feels like you are using a workstation and not a notebook!

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful Machine, if you don't download windows updates........2006-08-11

I had to return two of these machines. After downloading windows updates, the machine would loop through the rebooting process, asking whether you wanted to start in Safe Mode...Normal Mode. No matter what choice I used, the computer would start booting, blue-screen for about a quarter-second and then reboot. I was really sad to have to return this machine, as there's nothing else I've seen that has the size and specs as this one does for under $2,500.

If you buy this machine, you might want to stay away from Windows upddates.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2006-08-11

A job well done by acer! Cons: alittle warm on the lap and wrists if used for any prolonged period of time, and glare could be toned down alittle Pros: Everything else, dual core tech. is superman style faster then a bullet, with the 2 GB RAM and 120 Hard Drive, it's bigger then some destops in that respect, the camera is a nice little extra too!

5 out of 5 stars quite happy.......2006-07-29

Sorry, I can't get technical here but I did purchase this notebook from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and I think it's a very good buy. I knew enough to realize that the specs/dollar ratio was very high. The unit is very sturdy and I find the keyboard has a great feel of quality and placement. The left front of the base does get warm and if it stays on for awhile, (hours), the touch pad gets quite warm. But I purchased a wireless mouse and for me it's a perfect setup. There's another very good review of this machine at the page for the $999.00 priced Acer Aspire. It's the review by Capt. Kirk that put me over the edge in deciding to buy this one. Also, I chose free shipping, (duh), and Amazon's predicted receiving date was about a week out. I got it in 3 day's. I'm using it, glad to have it and it works fine! No buyers remorse. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Near-perfect balance of value and power........2006-07-27

I picked up one of these as a gift for my Wife, who occasionally needs to go online but can't always work at a desktop. When I saw the specs on this laptop, I had to pull the trigger and get one. It's been the best purchase I've made in quite awhile.

The laptop has 2Gb of RAM, which is exceptional for a laptop at this price. Moreover, the 120Gb SATA drive is also an exceptional, almost impossible feature of a laptop today. Finally, the dual-core CPU is the final surprise for this price. Combined, these elements mean I have a machine that's far faster and more capable than all of my desktops and almost as capable as my home server (I'm a systems architect, so I know servers).

It's also in possession of some other features that make it a superior value: a wide-screen super bright LCD at 15.4", a dedicated ATI graphics chip with 256Mb of memory, a dual-layer DVD burner, an SD/MMC/MS card reader, 4 2.0 USB ports, a Firewire port, and two killer radios.

Killer radios? Sure. 802.11 a/b/g Wifi, and Bluetooth 2.0. The range on the wireless connection is very good, and although I haven't tested Bluetooth fully, it syncs easily with my Nokia 3650.

The bundle of software is minimal but functional. There's no MS Office here, and XP Home is your OS. For this price, I wouldn't dare complain. Its intended use is the couch, so recharging it is not an issue and the wide screen makes browsing a treat. The keyboard layout is rational if unconventional, and your right thumb can page up/ down rather easily, making the lack of a scroll wheel somewhat easier to take.

Should you buy it? I'd recommend it, although I might say that waiting for a sale is a smart idea. Still, this is near-perfect and only the fact that it isn't a Tablet PC keeps it from being my dream machine.
