Have a seat. You're about to enter the digital dimension. Inside the DVD-RP62K, you'll find a digital Cinema Mode that combines brightness control with picture noise canceling. The result is a clear and crisp image that appears on your screen. Built-in Advanced Surround (V.S.S.) and Bass Plus provide channel surround sound that will blow back your hair. It's like going to the movies or a big concert without ever leaving your home. That's the digital dimension.
Amazon.com Product Description
Panasonic's DVD-RP62K offers a cool combination of features and quality. DVDs look great on both standard and high-definition (HD) televisions, thanks to the RP62K's multiple video outputs--crowned by its stunning progressive-scan video output when used with an HD or HD-ready set.

Video Features
Whether you currently have HDTV capabilities or you're merely thinking of "someday," the RP62K stands ready to deliver. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Other features include Cinema Mode, cutting down glare and improving color resolution in a darkened living room, Quick Replay, which jumps back seven to 10 seconds, variable zoom, which converts any widescreen image to full screen on a 4:3 aspect-ratio TV (eliminating the black bands at the top and bottom of the screen), and high-speed smooth scan.

Audio Features
The RP62K is compatible with standard CDs, audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and discs encoded with MP3 or WMA (Windows Media) audio files. The player even offers an onscreen audio navigation menu for searching for MP3 and WMA files (and it works with CD-Rs that feature multisession recordings). A 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimal decoding of all disc formats. RP62K is also equipped with an optical digital-audio output to feed a surround-sound signal to your Dolby Digital-decoding or DTS-decoding AV receiver, as well as a dedicated subwoofer output to let you enjoy those dinosaur stomps and timpani rolls to the fullest with but one additional speaker (see all subwoofers). If your subwoofer is hooked up to the player's dedicated subwoofer output, Bass Plus jacks up the low end.

To further round out the stereo experience, Advanced Surround (V.S.S.) simulates surround-sound effects using only two speakers, dynamic range compression limits the peak levels of Dolby Digital-encoded programs (found on most DVDs), and the Dialogue Enhancer increases the relative volume of the center channel, making center-channel content easier to hear.

Connections
In the video realm, you get the works: standard composite-video, S-video, and premium component-video outputs. The latter, of course, can be switched to deliver either 480i or 480p (progressive-scan) video. A single optical digital-audio output channels stereo and multichannel surround signals to your receiver, and the player also has a single set of stereo RCA analog audio outputs.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this for a Mac Mini. It's incredibly loud!!!.......2007-05-27

Does this device work as a firewire and usb hub? yes. Does the hard drive work? Yes. This device's fan technology is unintelligent--meaning it does not appear to be based on any thermostat. The fan kicks in even when not in use and even in a low temperature environment where it's not next to any other equipment. It sounds like half the volume of a blow dryer on low.

If you want a good drive, try the Lacie Quadra D2 drives. I have two Quadra D2 500GB drives and one BigDiskExtreme 600GB drive. You can stack them very nicely (although I buy thicker rubber separators so I have a half inch between them and below). They're very quiet.

Since removing my Mac Mini from being on top of a hard drive, I think its own fan has kicked in very rarely. So that's another advantage of using a hard drive that's not designed to sit under a Mini.

My Mac Mini is in my entertainment center, and after a year of listening to the noise, I finally said--enough is enough. It's now my temporary USB drive for moving files between computers.

Lacie Mini HD & Hub 500 Gb Fw & USB 2.0 7200RPM 8MB
I love this drive! I have a limited amount of space and this drive in combination with the Mac Mini gives me a great system that fits on a tiny corner of the desk, and it looks pretty stylish to boot. The drive is fast, has plenty of USB and Firewire ports, and well designed. With the Mini on top the drive blends in to look like it is one single unit (a stretch mini, if you will) and the design keeps heat to a minimum with intelligent use of corner risers allowing airflow to the bottom of the Mac Mini. My only gripes are the noise made by the unit and a problem waking the drive from sleep mode. While it isn't too loud, it is noticeable, especially since I use it as the boot drive and run it 24 hours a day. If I use the sleep command from the Apple Menu in OS 10, the drive sometimes won't start up when I try to wake it with my Bluetooth mouse or keyboard. It awakens normally if I log off and leave the drive running or let the computer go to sleep on its own. May be a Bluetooth/OS issue with this drive, but it is a very minor thing.

2 out of 5 stars LaCie is insane.......2007-04-30

Bought this drive for my Mac Mini. It matches the Mini's design nicely. It has useful additional ports for USB and firewire. Price and features are nice for the small form factor. Great right?

IT IS RIDICULOUSLY LOUD!

Sent it back.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent external HD for the money!.......2007-04-24

***UPDATE***

After a couple of weeks - this drive IS extremely noisy - I would lower my rating to two stars if it let me. I plan on replacing it with something else.
***Previous Review****

Like other reviewers, I have this external drive set up with a Mac mini in a home theater set up. I am running DVI to HDMI, so I can use my computer on my plasma.

I have had this drive for about a week now - and unlike other reviews - I have had no noise problems. The drive is very quick and very quiet - as quiet as my Mac mini.

I am using this external drive in iTunes as the 'main' download location - and it is as fast - when I rip CD's - as the Mac mini.

I am moving about 150 GB of music, and 150 GB of video from an XP drive to this drive - and so far so good.

I would recommend this drive to anyone!

2 out of 5 stars Avoid these drives like the plague.......2007-02-17

I have two LaCie Mini hubs -- a 320G and a 500G. Both were to be used with my 1.66GHz Mini as part of a home theater setup. That is, until I turned the drives on. Suddenly the computer room was louder than it had ever been. Even my MacPro is quieter than this! The drives run quite hot as well, to the point where you don't want to touch them. Other external enclosures, while not as spiffy looking as the MiniHub, keep my drives much cooler and are far quieter. As another reviewer said, it's almost like the fans malfunction and stay on all the time.

Now I have to explain to the wife and kids that they'll need to turn the volume up on the TV to compensate for the sound.
