Customer Reviews:
Performs as advertised........2007-01-04
I've had this enclosure for 3 months, and so far so good. Works exactly as I expected it to under light use. I just turn it on when I want to backup my primary HD (every few days), run Windows SyncToy to update the files saved on it, then turn it off again. I had to use a bit more force than I'm comfortable with to wedge my hd into the enclosure when I first got it, but eventually it went in without the use of any other tools. I wouldn't want to try to get it out again. It's a good looking drive, not too noisy, and I haven't noticed it getting very warm, though I only have it on for 10-15 minutes at a time, so I'm probably not a good judge of that.
Did not work from day one.......2006-11-23
Bought this enclosure based, in part, on the only other review at the time. When it arrived, I was keen to try it out having recently used a similar generic brand enclosure with no trouble. The ZDisc however gave me a very poor experience. Assembly was fine. But as soon as I'd got everything assembled and plugged it in ... nothing. No lights on the device came on. Then I noticed what looked like a light on the power supply - that was not lit. I tried a different power cord, no luck. After trying various things and double-checking everything, I was ready to give up.
I decided to send an e-mail to the Cintre tech. support who, to my surprise were very responsive and very helpful - unlike Tiger Direct. They shipped me a new power supply and cable at no charge - made me feel better at least. So when I finally got that - which was now outside of the 30 day return limit - I plugged it in and found that the light on the power supply now came on. Great, I thought. But then found that the unit itself still would not power on - still no lights. I've about had it with this device. I really need some kind of enclosure like this - and was going to buy 3-4 others too - but will not be buying any more of this model.
I was very hopeful at first, but then ended up being sorely disappointed.
Nice design and easy setup.......2006-06-04
I had an extra hard drive, and wanted to back up my MP3 collection and other data, so I investigated various hard drive enclosures. I selected the Cintre Z Disc because I liked that it includes a cooling fan which moves air around through the case to help keep the drive cool, and I found the design appealing. The same device is available in either sleek black, or silver with blue end caps.
Assembly is quite simple, in fact it took a lot longer to type this review than to actually assemble the drive.
Basically, snap the rear end cap off to open the enclosure, install the drive mounting plates to your hard drive, (mine required thin shim washers, .020", or .5mm thick, not included, to slide easily inside the enclosure). Set jumper on hard drive as required, for my Western Digital drive this was "Master, only drive on cable", which means simply removing the jumper altogether. Slide the drive into the enclosure, attach internal cables, snap end cap back on enclosure and attach external cables.
The box contains all the parts (except those shim washers mentioned above), power supply, and necessary cables, as well as an 18 page user guide with very clear color photographs, plus a "Quick Setup Guide" also with color photographs.
Assembled and hooked up, it works quite well, even with my Zeta operating system. I find that I can open folders in the computer and in the Cintre Z Disc on the desktop, and drag and drop files back and forth easily. The cooling fan is not audible over the sound of the computer itself, but if I hold my hand in front of the air exhaust, I can feel the air moving. There are two blue LEDs on the front of the case, one indicates when power is turned on, the other indicates when data is being transferred. If they seem bright, the unit can be positioned so they are not aimed directly at the operator, or one may simply turn the unit off when not actually using it. I also liked the design of the power supply, which has a "normal" sized plug which doesn't block adjacent outlets on my powerstrip.
In sum, I found this to be a nicely made product which was easy to setup and use.
