Amazon.com Product Description
Kiss that VCR goodbye. Panasonic's DMR-T6070 DVD-RAM/DVD-R recorder/player features a 160 GB hard drive that gives you up to 36 hours of recording time in the highest quality-recording mode (XP), or up to an incredible 284 hours in EP mode--more than 11 straight days of recording. This also means a 4.7 GB DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc can hold up to 1 hour in XP mode or 8 hours in EP, while a 9.4 GB double-sided DVD-RAM can hold up to 2 hours in XP and up to 16 hours in EP mode. Advanced functionality--including Time Slip, Chasing Playback, and Simultaneous Record and Play--are available when using either the DMR-T6070's HDD or a DVD-RAM disc.

The TV Guide On Screen electronic program guide (EPG) is handy for checking what's on. Setting up to record a TV broadcast is easy, too, thanks to VCR Plus+ functionality--simply select the desired program from the displayed list. You can also search for desired programs alphabetically or by displaying only the programs in a certain category. (TV Guide On Screen service may not be available in some areas.)

Further, the DMR-T6070 is equipped with an IEEE 1394 DV input and features DV Auto Recording, which is ideal for connecting and transferring footage from a compatible digital camcorder.

The DMR-T6070 also offers the ability to create personalized DVDs with user-defined thumbnails. When finalizing a DVD-R disc, both the title and a thumbnail image of the user's choice from each title are displayed. The Direct Navigator function displays thumbnails of all programs at the press of a button. With instant recording, you no longer need to search for empty disc space. By pressing the recording button, the unit finds available recording space and begins recording right away. There is no need to worry about overwriting already recorded content.

The DMR-T6070 allows faster than real time recording from the hard drive: 3x normal speed in DVD-RAM and 4x normal speed in DVD-R (on 4x-compatible media) at the touch of a button.

Time Slip lets you watch a program in progress, from the beginning, while the recorder continues to record the broadcast to the end. The Time Slip button lets you go back to a desired scene during recording. Using DVD-RAM or the hard drive, Chasing Playback permits you to skip back to watch material currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress.

The DMR-T6070 comes standard with: playlist recording from the hard disk; black level control on input and output; auto renewal recording; relief recording; progressive scanning output for scintillating playback on high-definition and HD-ready TVs; playlist function and easy video editing; CD-R and MP3 music playback; rapid random access during recording and playback; advanced MPEG2 encoding; built-in input TBC and 3D Y/C separation; QuickView (1.3x normal speed viewing); onscreen menu icons; an optical digital-audio output for DTS and Dolby Digital passthrough to compatible AV receivers; switchable (480p/480i) component-video output; SD Memory Card and PC Card slots; and a 3-prong grounded AC plug.

The player/recorder will downmix a high-resolution multichannel DVD-Audio program so you can enjoy it in stereo (via the unit's analog audio outputs), even if not in surround sound. The DMR-T6070's improved full-function IR remote control offers a level of convenience not seen before on Panasonic's DVD recorders, including one-touch controls for major functions.

What's in the Box
DVD recorder, a remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, an RF coaxial video cable, a stereo analog audio/composite-video cable, an IR blaster, a set of BNC-to-RCA component-video adapter plugs, and an AC power cord.

1 out of 5 stars Product Support Not as Advertised.......2007-06-08

HP Support guide says that tech support is available 24/7. The telephone number provided only gets you to a long menu and eventurally to another number to call. After giving your name, phone number, model number, servial number many times you are given a third number that provides "service" 9 to 5 M-F. After giving all of the information a few more times you are referred to "level 2" which in theory will send you a
RMA after you FAX them a copy of the sales invoice. Calls back to them requires going throught the same maze and they don't seem to have a record of your previous calls of FAX. E-mail support is not available for this product and they will not provide any other means of communication. FAXING a letter to them is just an exorcise. Looks like I have purchased a large paper weight.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY ONE!.......2007-05-01

I got the dvd740e as a gift and rarely used it to burn to dvds, cds and lightscribe labels. The unit worked fine for about 9 months and then it wouldn't recogize blank HP brand dvds discs or cds. I got with HP technical support and had the drive replaced under its original 1 year warranty. The replacement drive also failed with the same problems. I have had to get this model drive replaced five times all with the same problems. These HP burners are made with LiteOn technology. I am now getting an upgrade to the next model HP dvd840. I hope I will not have the same problems. Anyway, I don't know what the problem is with this drive. This technology is not something new and these burners should not be having these problems. Again read reviews, compare and do not buy this drive. Maybe the latest model which is the HP dvd940 is better.

Light Scribe 740E

For a product to receive 1 star it has to perform, albeit poorly. How many stars do you give a product that does not work at all and crashes your system?

Light Scribe the few times it did work did engrave photos onto CD and DVD. The only colors it can engrave are various shades of gray and bronze. Note: no pictures of Light Scribe engraved discs are in the packaging or on any of the Light Scribe advertising.
The only Light Scribe blank DVD discs I have found can store 1 hour or less of video.

The drive failed to recognize any blank disc and would continually display the message "insert a blank disc". I tried every type of disc that the drive supports and the drive didn't discriminate, it didn't recognize any of them.

I tried the help on the HP.com Website it was no help and there aren't any driver updates. HP does not support this device. This product is less than a year old and still under warranty. I called tech-help the drive failed every test so I shipped it off for warranty replacement. I received a replacement drive in 6 weeks installed it and it crashed my hard drive.

I shipped the 2nd 740e back and am now waiting for yet another drive it's been about 5 weeks so far. Do not buy this drive! Do yourself a favor and buy some lottery tickets, give to your favorite charity or buy beer for the homeless. You'll feel better...

1 out of 5 stars hope you don't need hp support.......2007-01-09

HP support should be called non-support. I have bought a lot of HP products in the past but have always been lucky enough to have them all hold up through the warranty period until now. Bought a Pavilion Media Center PC with lightscribe and less than 5 months later the lightscribe dvd died. Do they get me a replacement or just the run around? You got it....the run around. I will never and I advise everyone else not to buy from HP until they can prove to stand by their warranties.

1 out of 5 stars I will never buy HP again.......2007-01-05

Got an HP DVD writer 840x ... the internal version of this drive. It functions for reading and writing ... writing is very slow.

Had it for a while and thought I would try the Lightscribe feature out because it sounded cool. Got HP Lightscribe disks. When I try to burn the label, the software does not recognize the disk as a Lightscribe disk and ejects it out.

I updated the Lightscribe software ... spent hours on this by the way, and its very irritating.

I ran the tool that the HP manual tells me will give the serial number of my drive. When I went to HP's web page to file a problem, after carefully writing down he problem, and entering the serial number I got from their own recommended tool, the web interface does not take it and I lost all my data. There is nothing more irritating ... what is wrong with HP? Are they stupid or what?

Next day I called. The guy told me to do what I already tried, and then said there was firmware on the web. Well, the firmware out there does not recognize my drive and so will not update it.

Then he said I had to call back the next day because I need to go over all this with the returns department.

Does HP just want to go out of business? What is wrong with these idiots, it is like do not know how to build problems or support them, and they seem to hate their customers on top of that.

So for innocently buying a drive, that has apparently no QA and failed in the box, I have to spend hours and then days waiting to get a new drive.

The support person told me to run the firmware upgrade for another drive ... which would not work. Then told me the laser is probably out.

HP does not seem to know how to build or support a product. This is the slowest and most incompetant company I have ever seen. I have had problem with other companies and I can resolve without making multiple calls, or talking to multiple people, ... they take the call and send me a part right then and there, and they either know how to find a serial number without taking the system apart or they do not need it.

It seems amazing that most American companies just do not seem to care about anything but making their customers hate themselves for buying their product. AVOID HP PRODUCTS.
