Take your computing life with you wherever you roam with the Compaq Presario V2565US, designed for the budget-minded mobile professional. Featuring a cool, modern metallic design, the V2565US weighs only 5.4 pounds and is as thin as 1.29 inches. The widescreen 14-inch BrightView display is easily viewable even in direct sunlight and is great for watching DVD movies in their natural aspect ratio. It's powered by a powerful 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 ML-32 processor (which is ready to handle demanding 64-bit applications), and also offers a 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual layer LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), and 54g wireless connectivity with 125HSM/SpeedBooster support.
The Basics

Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is becoming average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library.
Processor: Combining strong performance with efficient usage of power, the 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 ML-32 is uniquely optimized to power today's thinnest notebooks. It's also built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It includes such AMD technology features as HyperTransport (which increases the communication between integrated circuits), PowerNow! (which enables longer battery life and reduced heat generation), and Enhanced Virus Protection (which works with Windows XP Service Pack 2 to better withstand attacks from certain classes of viruses). It also features a 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC3200) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. This notebook has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this PC's multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 8x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds. It also comes with a second DVD-ROM optical drive, with 16x read speed.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art .
Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a full-sized 101-key keyboard and touchpad with four-way scroll zone on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 14-inch BrightView WXGA high-definition widescreen display has a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1280 x 768 -pixel resolution, providing 25 percent more screen information and the same widescreen film picture size as a standard 15-inch XGA screen. You'll get TV-quality images, even in direct sunlight. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high- end, 3D graphics. It delivers 128 MB of video RAM shared with the system memory. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with microphone and headphone jacks.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The V2556US has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs. You get a basic offering of connectivity options, which does not include FireWire:

3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 VGA monitor port
1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
1 notebook expansion port
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Sonic Digital Media Plus, InterVideo WinDVD, Apple iTunes, Adobe PhotoShop Album STE, Muvee autoProducer, Microsoft Money, MSN Encarta Plus, and Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition (60 Day Trial Version).
Dimensions and Weight
This lightweight notebook is easily portable at just 5.4 pounds. It measures 13.15 x 9.1 x 1.29/1.53 inches (LxWxH).
Power
This notebook is powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which offers up to 3 hours of battery life (dependent upon computing conditions).
What's in the Box
This package contains the Compaq V2556US notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase as well as technical telephone assistance for one year. Software is also covered for 30 days from date of purchase.

First Laptop.......2007-05-06
I got this laptop 2 years ago. The only difference was that it had an Intel Centrino processor. Came with XP Home with SP2, but I upgraded to Windows Vista a few days ago. Laptop has never had a problem, and I highly reccomend it to anyone who wants a quality laptop.
Compaq Presario V2565US Notebook PC User Review, by Dr Garv........2007-04-19
Battery Life: With WiFi active but with out use of cd-rom (2 hrs 10mins)
Recharge Time: Approximately 2 hours.
Cool looking machine, light, reasonably well sized keyboard, great looking screen (Indoors).
Battery life on the low side of the spectrum but you always have the option of getting a 12 cell battery for much longer battery life (I have already purchased the 12cell battery and get approx. 4hrs, 22mins of use from it, you do give up a little with regard to weight but with the extra productivity time that you'll have I'm sure it won't be an issue. The 12 cell battery also raises the back of the machine, but gives it a very comfortable slope for typing and allows for better ventilation when on a desk or wherever your workspace is.)
With the laptop off, the screen is glossy enough to be used as a mirror (Keep it clean dust is easily noticed when in use). I have used it in direct sunlight and I have found that screen is bright enough to be used outdoors. Glare on your screen is an issue but not enough to prevent you from using the machine.
The hard drive tends to get hot under your left hand (At least it will keep you warm in the cold).
Good build quality, the laptop feels solid in your hands. When you pick up the computer or when opening the lid, there aren't any creeks or moans like if the parts are being squeezed or rubbing against each other. The cost of it may be cheap but, it doesn't feel cheaply made.
The speakers are good for a laptop at this price range (Altec Lansing), they perform well enough for personal entertainment but don't expect pristine sound quality. Compaq used to do better with sound from JBL Pro. (Such as the speakers from their now discontinued Presario V3000 series notebook). But I guess that was a change made to make the notebooks more affordable.
If you're a student like me, you'll love this machine. It just survived three-week-long project session, where I peeled out four (4) 5000 word projects and one (1) 10,000 word project. This thing was my buddy during this period. It didn't stall, freeze or show any big drop in performance, even though I didn't shut it down over those three weeks (Yes I even watched videos, played music and burned cd's during this period).
The only thing that hurt me was that I bought this thing one month before the new V3000 (with a bit more bells and whistles, Turion X2 cpu and more RAM) came out but I still love it none the less.
I've had it for a little over a year now. I don't think that I could have made a better purchase. I am however going to max out the ram to 2Gig's and increase the hard-drive space to 120GB's in the coming weeks I'll update this review when I do.
thoughts on this fine fine unit.......2007-01-24
I've had this little guy for just about a year now. Works great, takes a beating. The battery could last a little longer, and 512 ram isn't enough to do much when the video takes 128 of it. I've recently upgraded the memory & now there's nothing it can't do well.
I heartily recommend this wonderful device. Take it on vacation, take it to work, take it to Gramma's.

Laptop's PSU failed within a month, but got replacement quickly.......2006-08-28
I'd have given this Laptop 3 stars had it not been for the good replacement policy we got from the seller. Basically, the power supply unit on this laptop failed within the first month of use for no aparent reason, however the seller was very prompt and replaced the defective PSU right away.
As for the laptop itself, it is very nice in a nice form factor (not too large or too small).
The only bad thing is that I noticed windows tells me that it has only 384MB of RAM, which is wrong because the specs on amazon claime it has 512MB RAM, however before I rush to conclussions my guess is that the other 128MB are probably allocated to the video card (which in any case is missleading advertising), so I'll take a look at that and see what's going on.
Best value for the price.......2006-07-19
