this drive's housing is a well constructed seamless piece of aluminum with a vent on the front plus a small fan in the rear of unit, -it's very silent- even with hard use stays cool to the touch, same capacity as the WD my book 500 gb but the my book has a plastic housing no fan and if pushed will get a little warm the person that said this unit makes noise is in err his/her cooling fan is likely broken and is the source of the noise. if handeled roughly in shipping this would happen to any drive
bottom line it's a well made unit !!!!

This hard drive sounds like a washing machine and has terrible performance and reliability. Do not purchase this poorly made drive.
