Using it for a month and......... love it!!!.......2006-06-23
I briefly had one of the new UMPCs but there were so many flaws and limitations that I sent it back. I got the P1510D instead and found none of the compromises the UMPC had. At about the same size and weight (a bit bigger in baoth cases) the P1510 offers ultramobility with few compromises.
As a lefty I was worried about "palm interference" with the passive touchscreen. I had to make some minor adjustments in my writing but now I have no problems at all. The P1510 is powerful, portable and easy to use.
I only have two issues--
1- I wish it had the kind of small stereo speakers as you find on the Samsung Q1
2- It can, at times get hot. (This is an issue I had with my previous tablet pc as well.)
It is a great device-- well worth the extra cost over the current UMPCs. It is small and light enough that it goes everywhere with me. It is powerful enough that I can do any job I used to do with my larger standard notebook and much more.
I went with the P7120........2006-05-26
As I shopped for laptops I had the opportunity to test the P1510 and the P7120 side-by-side. The number one reason I chose the 7012 came down to keyboard size. I have to admit the tablet is pretty cool, and the ability to take notes and edit documents directly on-screen is compelling. Were I still in school I would seriously consider using it to take notes everyday in class (in my opinion the handwriting recognition is still too slow to be practical for note-taking, but the image files of your own handwriting would be valuable, especially if you had to draw diagrams or illustrations). As I mentioned, however, the keyboard was just too small. With the fingers of my left hand pressed tightly together they still didn't fit on the ASDF keys. I suppose hunt-and-peck typists would have an easier time, as would those with exceptionally small hands. The 1510 was also lacking some features that I would miss: an internal optical drive (dual-layer DVD burner, no less), Bluetooth, an open DIMM slot, a touchpad, a PC card slot, firewire, and the ability to add an auxiliary battery. Ultimately, though, it came down to the keyboard. If you think most of your input will be via the touch screen, you'll be fine. If you'll be typing much, you should make sure you will be comfortable with the smaller keyboard. www.notebookreview.com has a good review of both systems.
