The Basics

Hard Drive: The dv8280us has a unique hard drive array for a notebook--two separate 100 GB (5400 RPM--top of class for notebooks as of March 2006) hard drives for a total storage capacity of 100 GB. They can work together to boost performance, particularly when handling large files, and you can use one as an exclusive media drive for saved TV programming and an MP3 library.

Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2400 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3D and 2D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.

Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1 GB) maxes out the RAM capacity for this notebook (which is a rarity from a pre-built PC), and it offers a very fast 667 MHz speed (the top of its class as of March 2006). This enables you to enjoy immersive 3D gaming, edit video, and prepare multimedia-intensive presentations right out of the box.

CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the dv8280's multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs. Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD). </ul> Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM. Nvidia's TurboCache feature increases the performance of this thin and light notebook PC without increasing its size or draining its battery. It's coupled with the PowerMizer 6.0 advanced power management technology, which significantly extends your notebook PCÕs battery life while minimizing the amount of heat it produces.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The dv8280us features an integrated tri-mode wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). With the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs. Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as Tivo or ReplayTV). It's compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV and antenna inputs, and it includes an FM tuner.

It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works 8.0 (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), HP Image Zone Plus, Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Encarta Encyclopedia 2005, Quicken New User Edition 2005, Microsoft Money 2005, Sonic DigitalMedia Plus, Sonic MyDVD Plus, WinDVD 5 Player Basic, Google Toolbar, and PC Doctor.

The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.

Not bad, but not great either.......2007-05-22

The other five star reviews here are make true points -- it does have a beautiful screen, is powerful and fast, and has lots of nice features.

However, a few things that knock it down:
1) The keyboard feels good but doesn't register all the keys you type. It may only miss one out of every 25 presses, but it can be pretty frustrating to have to keep backspacing when you know you hit the right key.

2) The computer makes lot of funny noises. It has a little click that occurs about every 3 seconds depending on how much it's thinking. And the fan on it isn't loud, but does this strange thing where it will cut on for only two seconds while the computer is crunching through something difficult. So if you're scrolling on Googlemaps, each time you grab the map and scroll anywhere the fan will do a little wooooooh sound. If you keep scrolling it goes wooh-wooh-wooh like a car engine revving up for a race. Weird.

3) The boot up time (using Windows XP) is nice and fast, but it actually needs to keep thinking for quite a while after everything appears to be loaded. So if you need to reboot often it could get a little frustrating.

4) Maybe you're smarter than me, but I was fooled by the product description above into thinking that it has an FM tuner. It does not.

5) The bluetooth on board doesn't work with my scosche bluetooth headphones... but maybe that's just something wrong with this particular computer.

6) The wireless connector is good, but my roommate (who has a Macbook) can pick up a signal from much farther away (but I'm not saying you should by a Mac!!!).

Other than that, it works the way it should, and although the aforementioned problems are somewhat annoying I'm definitely not thinking about sending it back. I'm sure most computers have their batch of annoyances, just different ones.

AMAZING MACHINE!.......2007-03-21

I received this product just about two weeks ago and it has astonished me every time. The screen clarity is stunning. The processor and memory are wonderful. This machine is incredible! In fact, it's so amazing that my husband has to have his OWN and we are getting a second one! This machine has it all!

A superb desktop replacement notebook.......2007-03-18

This machine offers a terrific combination of powerful video with 512MB independent memory (included system 2GB RAM is free for system use, nothing else). There are not the typical delays with multiple windows drawing that are seen with combined memory systems.
Disk space with the two HD arrangement is a great idea: 7200 RPM for system files so you gain speed, and 5400 RPM for data files. Also, you could automate backups of data from the second disk to the first one.
This machine is so cool, the fan runs rarely on speed mode.
And the large and bright screen permit me to open two full documents for editing at the same time. No more windows overlaps unless you do open +five apps at the same time (like me!).

I don't miss a desktop with this powerful machine.

Beauty in a Box..........2006-12-23

HP has combined great hardware with display and ergonomics into beautiful notebooks. They have mastered efficiency with lower costs and have engineerd a terrific product. Other than it being a bit on the heavy side, it's a strong powerhouse laptop/desktop. By the way, I agree that ANY customer service (mostly all telephone now) being dumped overseas to where you can't even understand or be understood by anyone, is a great travisty of many manufacturers. Other than that I would highly recommend HP laptops (2 of my friends have them also); especially now that you can get them alot cheaper than you could 3 months ago.

Desktop replacement at a geat price.......2006-07-13

This notebook is a monster. The processor speed and memory make doing anything fast. I purchased this because I am a software developer and I like to have a large display, fast processor and a lot of RAM for running my applications.

The only drawback to this notebook is that it is not a laptop. I was on a plane and opened my computer to look up something and I quickly found that this computer was not going to sit on the tray on the set.

If you don't mind the extra weight of a larger notebook, then you will love the extra power and beautifu screen that this notebook provides.

FYI - Targus offers a number of bag choices for this 17 inch notebook. I found a reasonably priced Targus messenger bag at BestBuy.
