Amazon.com Product Description
Small enough for desktop PC use and versatile enough to stand in for home theater duty, Philips' standard (4:3) aspect-ratio 15PF7835 active-matrix TFT LCD TV is stylish enough and small enough to be used in any room of the house. The 15-inch progressive-scan 480p/ED TV offers high brightness (400 cd/m2) and high contrast (450:1), as well as an integrated NTSC TV tuner for cable or broadcast reception of all your favorite programs. Hook it up to an optional DTV receiver or progressive-scan DVD player and you'll enjoy vivid, detailed images from 480p and computer sources on the set's native 1,024 x 768 screen.
LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (no risk of image burn-in), space savings, light weight/easy positioning, and energy efficiency (most LCDs use substantially less power than their CRT equivalents.
They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts, which usually "spec" higher (higher brightness, higher contrast ratio). In this set, an onboard DCDi chip from Faroudja enhances resolution by eliminating the stair-step jagged edges often seen on progressive-scan displays.
Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DCDi chip also offers 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
Smart Picture control lets you change -- at the touch of a button -- the picture settings (color, tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, with modes for soft, natural, rich, multimedia, and personal. An audio volume leveler (AVL) keeps the TV sound at an even level for a more consistent, comfortable sound.
Inputs include 2 composite-video connections, 1 each component- and S-video, an RF antenna/cable-box/VCR input, and a 15-pin D-Sub analog RGB input for your PC, with a .125-inch stereo headphone jack for private listening (headphones not included).
