5 out of 5 stars Works great for me........2006-10-19

Have had one of these drives for several months. No problems. Just buying another. Puchased this becuase of the 4 Maxtor drives I had crash in the last two years. Maxtor's worked for about 18 months and then died, like dead, like no data recovery. (all data was backed-up) Avoid Maxtor drives.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE of SimpleTech Harddrives.......2006-06-29

I have owned a SimpleTech 400 GB USB/Firewire hardrive for over a year now. It seemed good at first because it had extremely high transfer rates in both USB and Firewire modes for the first month. I had some periodic problems: the computer only recogized the drive on every other boot up (I have HP Media Center PC m7077c [pretty new and robust] running XP Media Center). So if I need that drive I learned that I had to turn it off when I turned the computer off, and would turn it on after the computer was up and running. Then after three months of ownership the drive crashed and I had to buy an expensive program to recover the data and other external drive of equal size to backup the data onto. I reformed the drive and ran checkdsk and other diagnostic software. It seemed to solved the problem for awhile but then I go delayed write failures. SimpleTech told me to use a USB powered Hub and not the Firewire because of know problems with the Firewire connection. So then I did that and it seemed to solve the problem for awile.
Remember now I have the second drive of the same size a Maxtor, and it is 9 months into my ownership it. It is 1 year into my ownship of the SimpleTech drive and there is no comparison. I have never had any troubles with my Maxtor external hard drive or my Western Digital hard drives.

I should have learned my lesson, but a week ago bought 2 SimpleTech 500 GB USB drives. Out of the box 1 of the drives was not functioning properly, the second seemed to be ok. So I called SimpleTech and they told me the same story about needing a USB powered hub and that I should not plug there drives into the USB 2 hubs on the front of the machine, only on the back. So one of the drives out of the box did not work and the second is giving me constant delayed write failures. Meanwhile, both my external Maxtor drives and my Western Digital drive are working fine. I drive swapping the locations on the computer and the cables, but it makes no difference the SimpleTechs continue to give the problems I described and the Western digital and the Maxtor Drives work great. Well I hope that helps someone so they don't have to go through the same headaches as me.
