This set has built-in analog/digital tuners (NTSC/ATSC) that will receive free over-the-air HDTV signals (ATSC). It's also Digital Cable Ready (via the CableCard slot), so you can enjoy digital cable without an additional box or remote using an optional CableCard (provided by your cable operator).

With its latest 55-inch plasma TVs, Hitachi introduces a completely new and innovative technology to large-scale plasma television. The advanced engineering in Hitachi Wide Aperture technology dedicates more screen surface to the actual viewable picture area. Brighter pixels combined with a black matrix between them deliver a brilliant picture with deeper, truer colors and better contrast.
The 55HDS52 offers a 768p display (1366 x 768), which scales 720p HDTV signals to fit the display. (More than 94 percent of the 720 HD signal is scaled to the display; due to variances in program productions and transmissions not all of the 720 signal is suitable for display.) The 4 MB 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. The anti-reflective, high-contrast screen effectively absorbs ambient room light, reducing reflections and producing richer blacks, vibrant color and increased detail in shadows and highlights.
The "learning" AV Net system simplifies operation of your complete home theater with one convenient interface. Infrared-based emitters integrate with on-screen commands to control up to four components. You can control external components like DVD players, VCRs and AV receivers or use the sophisticated AV NET to learn new commands that might be developed in new products. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
