Get sharp, clear imagery from any television signal with the 42-inch Samsung SPR4232 EDTV plasma television. It has a built-in analog/digital (NTSC/ATSC) tuner that will receive free over-the-air HDTV signals and is Digital Cable Ready, so you can enjoy digital cable without an additional box or remote.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The Automatic Digital Format Conversion System is compatible with 1080i and 720p HDTV formats, 480p EDTV and 480i SDTV formats. This system will accept any DTV, analog TV, or XGA computer RGB input. All video signals are converted to a 16:9 wide-screen pixel count (1280 x 720) progressive display for flicker-free images.

Designated as an EDTV, the TH-42PD50U displays signals in 480-line progressive (480p) mode, and can also accept 480p signals from video sources such as progressive-scan DVD players. While an EDTV doesn't have enough pixels for a true high-definition resolution, the difference is surprisingly small.

The TH-42PD50U features a widescreen picture aspect ratio (16:9; standard TVs have a 4:3 aspect ratio), which is the ideal screen format for viewing widescreen video from DVD players. The 3D digital comb filter helps reduce video noise by comparing each horizontal scanning line with the lines above and below and with the corresponding line on the previous subsequent video frames. Other features include auto-pixel shifting (to prevent picture burn-in), 175-degree viewing angle, fanless cooling for quiet operation, and 12-bit processing for 68.7 billion colors.

It has two built-in stereo speakers for 16 watts of total power (8 watts per speaker) that can produce TruSurround virtual surround sound, which is capable of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. The SPR4232 features the following video and audio connections:

So far, it works great........2007-02-11

I had to figure out that I needed an adapter to connect it to a coaxial cable in order to connect the player to my not-so-old-but-not-brand-new TV and then it worked perfectly. It required no additional "modifications" or "setting of codes" or anything like that. IMPORTANT NOTE: THE BOX AND THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL ARE THE ORIGINAL FACTORY ITEMS AND SAY THIS IS A REGION 1 PLAYER, HOWEVER, THERE IS A SMALL STICKER ON THE BOX THAT STATES: "THIS UNIT HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO PLAY ALL REGION DVDS, INCLUDING REGIONS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 0 PAL/NTSC". This is the only sign I found that this is not an "ordinary" Region 1 player. So far, it has played Regions 1, 2, and 3 DVDs perfectly. Also, I have ordered DVDs from Amazon.uk and a Hong Kong distributor and they have arrived promptly, in perfect condition, duty free, with low shipping/postal charges (Hong Kong was postage free) - just be sure to check languages and subtitles, if they are important.

Incidentally, TO AMAZON: YOUR PHOTO ON THIS PAGE IS NOT FOR THIS PRODUCT! IT ISN'T EVEN FOR A DVD PLAYER OR FOR A TOSHIBA PRODUCT!!

It worked perfectly right out of the box and played both European and US DVDs with any problems whatsoever. I have had it for 3 months now and so far there are no complaints.

Disappointment.......2007-01-03

Second region free DVD that I purchased from this vendor - while they both started out fine after a short time they would only play non-region 1 disks. Region 1 disks for the US started skipping. I thought that maybe it was a fluke with the first unit but it is the same with the second unit (different brand). I am not happy.
