<small><b> With the 6270, Nokia is throwing its weight into the slider phone category. View an interactive demo of the phone's features.</b></small></td></tr></table> <B>Design</B>
The 6270 is all Nokia, with the classic clean lines and sleek shape. The phone's sliding design features a hidden dialpad that slides out when you need to dial a number. Vital phone functions are controlled by the button pad below the screen. The massive, 240 x 320 display supports up to 262,000 colors -- plenty of resolution and color depth for your videos and photos. The phone's 2-megapixel camera is housed on the rear of the phone and there's also an LED flash. A USB data port is provided, as is an infrared data port. Plus, there's a miniSD slot for storing photos, video, and other media. A 128 MB card is included with the phone.
<B>Calling Features</B>
The 6270's 9 MB of built-in memory can hold all your important contacts. A call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls, and in addition to a vibrating alert, the phone supports 64-chord polyphonic ringtones. If you're into custom ringtones, the 6270 has you covered; it supports ringtones in a dizzying array of formats, including MP3, MP4, AAC, AMR, WB-AMR (TrueTones), and MIDI. Meanwhile, a speakerphone lets you talk hands-free while you're doing other things, and picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. Voice dialing is also supported.
The phone's Bluetooth wireless technology lets talk freely on a wireless headset or sync up seamlessly with your PC and other compatible Bluetooth devices.
<B>Messaging, Internet, and Tools</B>
The 6270 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. A built-in email client supports POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP, as well as email attachments. There's an included Wireless Village IM client, too.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the 6270, as well. It supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the new, high speed EDGE data protocol. When used with your carrier's data service and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in browser for downloads and mobile Web browsing. The browser also supports full HTML Web sites. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile text messaging users.
A number of handy productivity tools are bundled with the 6270 including a voice memo recorder, an alarm clock, a calculator with currency converter, a calendar, and a to-do list. And because the phone supports the SyncML synchronization standard, you can easily sync your PC-based contacts.
<B>Imaging and Entertainment</B>
The 6270's built-in 2-megapixel camera captures stills and video to the phone's internal memory, or to a miniSD memory card. Pictures are designed to be taken in landscape mode, allowing you to take full advantage of the 6270's massive screen real estate. Videos are captured in 3GPP format.
Into music? You're in luck with the 6270. Store your favorite MP3, M4A, or AAC -based music on the 6270 and listen whenever the feeling strikes you on the built-in stereo speakers. When you want to jam out in private you can hook up a stereo headset. Lastly, if you want to dress up the 6270, picture effects, custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be set to fit your personality.
Java support is built into the 6270, making it a powerful gaming companion. You can also use the handset's USB data connection to load more games and files onto the phone.
<B>Vital Statistics</B>
The Nokia 6270 weighs 3.49 ounces and measures 4.09 x 1.97 x 0.91 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 200 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Do not buy this phone.......2006-09-20
I bought this phone in July 06 and primarily for Email and Browser support over EGPRS. Both have problems. Email sending does not work with the built-in email client. XHTML browser just does not work on m.gmail.com with some error thrown up.
I have been calling, emailing and faxing to NokiaCare (or don't care) at Bangalore and they are giving stock replies that these are network dependent features. I have proven to them they are not but they won't take my "crippled" phone back.
Please do not buy this expensive phone for anything else but voice calls and maybe camera. And for this there are better handsets than 6270.
I regret buying this one and going by their attitude I would never buy a Nokia again.
MP3 player?.......2006-09-19
There are nice things about the phone, mainly the incredible screen, but don't buy it to listen to music. The sound is fine but the mp3 player software seems only about 40% finished - it's kind of like a dumb person taking the college SAT tests, the bell rings and you wince as 4 pages of unanswered questions lie in front of your #2 lead pencil. This must have happened to the software engineers at NOKIA. The boss man told them their music player was finished and they had no say in the matter. Also the operating system is fairly obscure and you can't find much software for it. I had a smartphone - it's 3rd party support was wonderful, the 6270's is almost non-existent.
Excellent World Phone.......2006-08-05
Hi,
I am using this phone since last four months now. Have used it across the world from India to Europe to US... excellent performance. Vice is clear. Strong reception even in the weakest signal areas. A Must buy for a global traveler. Excellent feature. FM Radio, MP3 Player, 2 MP Camera, Bluetooth, Infrared, Expandable memory... this phone features almost all the features... this phone made me a big fan of Nokia... Good battery life... i just need to charge in once in two days..... I certainly recommend this to every one.
Worst Phone Ever Owned.......2006-07-19
This is the worst cell phone I have owned in 15 years. I frequently change my phone and have tried almost every brand in the market. Not only does it have very poor quality technical components but the battery is also sub standard. Three friends and I bought this phone together on July 14 and three of us have had to send it to the service center. The forth person just informed me that the software is hanging which is a precursor to bigger problems. When I went to have the phone fixed at the service center I noticed atleast 10 people with the same phone. As if all this is not bad enough, Nokia informed me that they are aware of this problem and will be taking my phone for repair and are unable to tell me when it will be returned. So I am paying for my service and I have no phone. Nokia has been advertising this phone heavily and using it as a promotional item knowing very well that is a poor design which leads me to believe that Nokia is knowingly duping customers. So save your money and buy another phone.
Works well, but a few issues.......2006-05-29
I've had my Nokia 6270 for about a week now and here are my observations:
(1) Overall build quality is good. Many forums complained that the sliding mechanism has a cheap feel. The slider does appear to be made entirely of plastic (no metal rails) and this contributes to the perception that it is a "cheap" phone. The slider on my phone does not feel loose as many people mentioned. Tight, but still plastic.
(2) Voice quality on Cingular in San Jose, CA is good.
(3) Size and weight are good, it is lighter than my Motorola flip (don't know the model number - it is not a Razr). The Nokia phone does not feel as substantial or solid as the Motorola (and I am NOT a Motorola fan).
(4) Keypad is well lit and the keys are of sufficient size that they are easy to use.
(5) Voicemail icon - The voicemail icon does not appear on the phone display when voicemail is waiting. This issue is well documented on numerous forums and there does not appear to be a fix. To me, this is a big deal because you must check voicemail to see if any are available. This will be a "showstopper" for many people.
(6) Battery life - Not good. It is rated at over 3 hours and this appears to be about right. If you talk a moderate amount, you will have to charge this phone every night.
(7) Display - One of the redeeming features of this phone. Google maps are very nice.
(8) Camera - I'm one of those purists that tend to use multiple "best in class" devices rather than one device that doesn't do anything particularly well. The camera took clear images, but the color seemed a bit washed.
(9) Bluetooth - Very nice. Synched flawlessly with Mac OS X. I do not have a bluetooth headset, so I can't comment on that functionality. It does have file exchange functionality, so you can use it as an external storage device. Very easy to move files from computer to phone and vice-versa.
(10) External key placement - I carry my phone in my pants pocket and I am constantly hitting the external keys and changing volume, turning power off, changing profile and other settings. For those of you who carry your phones in this manner, you will find this quite annoying.
(11) Web services work very well, but it is not configured out-of-the-box. Use Google to search for "6270 voicemail icon" and you'll find a Cingular forum where a user (ronnieroller) did a great job of explaining how to configure web services. The setup information is linked directly in the forum and I'll post it here as well:
http://www.wallyx.com/nokia_6270
Unless you are very familiar with how phones access web services for a particular carrier, just go here first and you'll have it up and running in no time. Without it you wont' have a prayer.
(12) Missed call indication - very poorly implemented. The indicator is visible when the phone is in screensaver mode and with backlighting off. Hit a key and the wallpaper and basic menu appear, but the missed call indicator is gone.
(13) Basic ringtones - Nokia has thoughtfully included polyphonic ringtones, but no basic, traditional "ring" sounds. I prefer something minimalistic and modern - not the old Bell System schoolbell - but at least cool. You won't get it out of the box with this phone.
Overall, I'm not satisfied. Would be tolerable if they cleaned up the interface.
