Customer Reviews:
Dell Computer.......2007-05-28
I've had Dell Laptops since they began making them a long while ago. I will only buy a Dell. Any cosmetic problem or any complaint; I've sent it back and they've fixed it for free. Four laptops and maybe three trips during those years to repair (twice for cosmetic keyboard issues). I think most of the problems some of these reviewers had are user problems. A little knowledge can be dangerous. I think they have a 'little' knowledge. My last laptop was a 8100, before that a 1100, and can't remember the oldest one. I also use a C600 on which I use exclusively to record Duplicate Bridge scores.
My new laptop will be 6400.
If you want a crappy laptop, this one's for you!.......2007-05-09
I've had my Inspiron for over a year now and I have to say that I couldn't be less satisified if I had purchased an empty box from Dell. It runs VERY slow even though I've added a gig of RAM, the autoplay box pops up every few minutes for no reason, and the batter life lasts about as long as the flavor in a stick of chewing gum. Granted, my Inspiron is a 1300, not a 6400, but I've not heard anything positive about any of the Insprion models.
Let me put it this way: I've never written a bad review of anything on Amazon, but this piece of garbage finally made me mad enough to break my own positive-ratings habit.
Needs some slight upgrades to make it better.......2007-05-04
I bought this laptop from Dell and was able to do some customization (it needs at least 1 gig of RAM to work well) and added Microsoft Home Office bringing my price up to $1,100 (including shipping & tax). It is really an excellent device. I did opt for Windows Vista which is a little bit slower than XP when booting and shutting down but is a heck of a lot more user intuitive.
I am not too crazy about the built in device for moving the curser (I prefer the little joystick near the G & H keys) so I had to add a mouse.
I like the silver color and the fact that it doesn't run as hot as some of the other laptops I have used. The battery is not great so I mostly run on AC (this is not a concern for me because I do not travel with it). If this is important to you, you should definately up for a better battery.
The screen resolution if just right and the screen can be viewed from any angle.
It became ugly very soon.......2007-04-12
Performance of the one I bought is pretty good. But I encountered couple of problems:
1. The hand rest surface (and most of the outer surface) is coated with a fine porous silver color material. After about 2 months of use, the silver color of the hand touching areas changed to dark gray getting closer to light black (may be this porous coating reacts with sweat). Now the laptop is about 8 months old and very ugly looking because of the big dark gray spots here and there. And they won't go away even though I tried to clean. Given that I am used to travel with the laptop, this does not please me.
2. And in a place near the space tab, the coating just went away showing the underneath white color plastic like material.
3. Couple of days ago, two keys stopped working (Left CTRL key and the one with tidle). But I guess this is common in all laptops. I am yet to get this fixed.
For about 3 years in the past, I was using a black color Dell Latitude C600. I didn't encounter problems like this and it worked very well. Even though the speed was around 850MHz, my Linux installation was performing fast (It was faster than an HP Presario 2500 with a 2.6 GHz Celeron processor - I ran some benchmark tests)
Very FAST.......2007-02-23
I had the latest Pentium M laptop before I bought this, and the speed increase with the new Core Duo processor is amazing. I am the type of person who runs many programs at once, and the dual processors make a huge difference. The screen is also brighter and sharper than me previous laptops, and it has the best built-in speakers I've heard. Battery life is good, and despite being a 15.4" widescreen, it is still light in my backpack.
