Samsung's 42-inch HPN4239 plasma flat-panel television offers bright, brilliant color, extraordinarily high contrast, and high-definition compatibility with HD sources. Its native resolution is 1,024 x 768, and its direct-digital DVI input works with compatible DTV set-top boxes and PCs. There's also a standard RGB computer input. A built-in analog tuner, a pedestal stand, and a generous array of inputs and outputs make setup a snap. Further, the set's widescreen (16:9) display is specially configured to accommodate the native aspect ratios of your favorite movies, either from DVD or from HDTV broadcasts when the set is hooked up to a DTV receiver (not included).

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the HPN4239 is an astoundingly slim 3.1 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (the set includes a convenient pedestal stand, pictured). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.

Additional inputs include one HD component-video input (480p/720p/1080i) and one SD component-video input (480i) as well as one each S-video, composite-video, and RF. Samsung's proprietary video-enhancement technology, Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe), performs 3D noise reduction and detail and contrast enhancement for all interlaced (non-HD) sources.

The set also houses a 10-watts-per-channel audio amplifier for use with optional speakers, such as those in your existing stereo or home theater, or Samsung's matching PSM4230 speakers. Other optional accessories include a wall-mount kit (WMN4230) and a pneumatic floor stand (FS420).

The set's NTSC two-tuner picture-in-picture (side-by-side, split-screen) grants convenient, simultaneous viewing of two TV programs, and a fanless cooling system ensures quiet operation.

This 19" widescreen monitor costs less than many 17" monitors. This was a big selling point for me. I'm pleasantly surprised by how good it looks. Also, it's light enough to move easily, and despite its large visible area it doesn't cover half my desk.

This monitor has a DVI input and a VGA input. This monitor prefers either 1440x900 or 1280x720 resolution. Older (like 3-5 year old) video cards may not be capable of these resolutions. You can set your video card to other resolutions but they will look wrong/bad. Check your video card hardware first, make sure it can handle 1440x900 for best results. (That's possibly what's wrong with the other reviewer's "too wide" symptom, an old video card and/or drivers that likely can't do anything newer/bigger than 1024x768.)

I use this most often for photo/graphic editing--so much easier on a widescreen monitor. My workstation features a nVidia 6800GS video card which isn't especially old or especially new.

For the price I paid it is a good product.The colors look a little fadded and every thing seems to be too wide.I have been trying to adjusted that but had no success.But since I will go with a lap top in a couple years this monitor suits me just fine for now.You get what you pay for,I guess.

Under $200 its a steal considering the performance this LCD yields.

I bought this for my Mom over the holiday and really didnt expect much, just wanted to get her first generation 17" CRT off the desk. Man, was I ever amazed at the display when I fired this baby up, and that was attached to a 5 year old PCI video card with only 32M of Ram! And. it was an easy self-calibrating install that anybody can manage.

I have Viewsonics and Samsungs in my home office and in my company's lab and this Sceptre model is as good as either one of those brands. This is one of the biggest surprises I've ever found, and I spec and purchase computer hardware for my company so I may have to rethink our sourcing strategy after seeing this Sceptre model up close. HOWEVER, I am not happy with the design of the gloss black base against the flat black frame, and the stand is cheap cheap cheap. Otherwise I got no complaints. 5 Stars.
