Product Description
The C30W47 is a 30" 16: 9 Direct View Integrated HDTV.A fully integrated ATSC tuner with the ability to receive off-air high definition broadcasts (up to 1080i resolution) without the need for an external set-top box. A digital cable tuner (QAM) allows for the reception of digital cable signals that are not scrambled. The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) provides an uncompressed transfer of high definition video from a digital video source to a digital display device. HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) ensures copy protection of the content. Advanced 8-VSB Chipset Technology offers better indoor reception of over-the-air DTV broadcasts and makes reception of broadcasted data possible. 30" Flat, High Definition, Fine Pitch Picture Tube offers the highest resolution capability possible for viewing of HD content. Fine pitch picture tube with Invar mask provides the sharpest and clearest picture possible. Features 3:2 Pull Down Cinema Correction - video processing compensates for the different frame rates in film as opposed to video. Two tuners allow you to view two channels at the same time, without the need for an extra external tuning source such as a VCR. Split screen (unlike PIP which has a smaller inset) shows two channels of equal size, side-by-side. 3D Y/C Comb Filter combines the adaptive digital processing of a 3 line digital comb filter with 3D motion detection. Eliminates hanging dots and color noise on stationary images. Reduces "dot crawl" and overall picture noise. Advanced Scan Velocity Modulation (Off/Low/High) varies the speed of the electron beam with video transitions to increase apparent sharpness of the edges.

Receive and view standard- and high-definition broadcast television from one easy-to-use, high-quality television. The Zenith C30W47's 30-inch flat, high-definition, picture tube offers full 1080i HDTV resolution in a widescreen (16:9) dimension that closely matches the formatting of your favorite movies. The set also includes several aspect-ratio modes to adjust the content to your preference, cropping standard 4:3 images to fill the whole screen, etc. (choose from normal, wide, panorama, zoom 1, and zoom 2).

A fully integrated ATSC tuner receives off-air (broadcast) high-definition broadcasts (480p, 720p, and 1080i)--without the need for an external set-top box. The set will upconvert all incoming signals to high-quality 1080i resolution.

A 3D digital comb filter combines the adaptive digital processing of a 3-line digital comb filter with 3D motion detection. This eliminates hanging dots and color noise on stationary images, as well as reducing "dot crawl" and overall picture noise. Scan velocity modulation dynamically varies the scanning speed of the electron beam to create clear, well defined images for the sharpest picture possible. Finally, Zenith's Dynamic Focus aligns the red, green, and blue color beams in the center of the screen to ensure accurate side-to-side focus.

Other features include color temperature control, manual degaussing and tilt correction, black-stretch circuitry, 7 custom picture modes, and user controls for contrast, brightness, tint, color, and sharpness.

Connections include a direct-digital DVI input with HDCP (high-definition content protection), 2 HD component-video inputs (480p, 720p, 1080i), 4 each composite-video and 3 S-video inputs, and 2 RF coaxial inputs for older cable boxes or a reception-improving antenna. A set of composite-video-based AV outputs with variable audio output level lets you hook the set up with another component, and an optical digital-audio output passes Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound (from select HDTV programs) to a compatible surround receiver and speaker system.

The left/right onboard 2-way speakers receive 7 watts per channel, and built-in Dolby Virtual surround processing simulates surround sound from any 2 speakers, including the TV's. Tone controls include adjustable bass and treble, with Dynamic Bass System on hand for emergency low-end reinforcement. The set comes with an illuminated universal remote control.

5 out of 5 stars Not bad at all..........2007-05-17

I read the reviews that complain about the heat dissipation, and yes, the case can get hot. But - I am running with a 500GB Wester Digital drive and the case has never gotten too hot to touch. The aluminum does what it is supposed to do - spread the heat over a larger area and dissipate it. Yes, you could keep your drive cooler with a external case sporting a fan, but that adds to noise, and very few active cooling external cases are quiet enough to keep near you. With the Western Digital 3.5 drive in it, it's virtually silent, which is a very good thing.

I used the drive like a huge portable drive, in which I keep my development environments and a copy of PortableApps, so my email, FTP, web browser, etc all run from the drive itself. The case base is stable enough to sit on the desk in the upright position near me without undue worry of it tipping over. The case itself is sturdy enough that after a year of use, it only sports two scratches and no dents to speak of.

I've never had a problem with the USB or eSATA ports - the eSATA is faster - noticably, but the USB is the one I use the most and is fast enough for all those apps to be constantly running off of the drive. Maybe the other couple of reviewers that had a problem with the eSATA port had defective units?

The cord is really sturdy, and since I'm plugging in the power cord to the unit twice a day - once in the morning at work and once at home at night, I'd have to say it passes the heavy use test. Still, I'm careful to pull the power plug out of the back of the unit straight out every time. I do wish that the wall plug was was a standard PC three prong plug like on my old Western Digital external drive so that I didn't have to unplug the whole thing when I take it with me, but that's a wish - not a complaint.

I carry the unit in a laptop case with my other equipment, with the drive in the laptop's place. This seems to provide enough cushion that the drive has yet to have any problem from the jostling around every day.

All in all, I'm going to buy another one - black this time, and use that to back up the first one. I've got no need for the "one-touch" buttons some of the other external cases support, so this simple enclosure works just fine. I'd have to find an enclosure with something really geeky and spiffy to make me switch.

Heats up but does the job if you're not using it for long periods of time. It works well and is easy to set up. Pretty sleek looking too.

1 out of 5 stars Serious heat problem and poor quality.......2007-02-07

I just got mine and was immediately disappointed with the cheap quality. The eSATA connector is mis-aligned and will not work. The power supply is weak and has trouble spinning up a 4 platter 400GB drive consistently. After one hour of use I pulled the drive out to check on the heat and it was way too hot. I work for a drive manufacturer and can guarantee a shortened life for any drive running inside this box. The case is aluminum but there is no conductive path to pull the heat from the drive to the case. It also has a solid metal cover over the circuit board that holds in more heat. Don't even think of wasting your money on this!

1 out of 5 stars NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR MANY REASONS.......2006-07-12

I purchased this Vantec product and used it for a short time. Most USB enclosures offer "heat dissipation thru the metal case", as does this one. However, I grew very concerned about how hot the Vantec became, especially after active operation.

Heat is a major enemy of electrical motors. The HDD obviously just cooks inside the Vantec. There is also a definitive difference between its temperature in stand-by mode, and during/immediately after active use.

I found another USB enclosure offering active ventilation: the Apricorn EZ Bus DT, which not only has a built-in fan, but IMHO, for several critical reasons, is a better design and a smarter choice. Here is why:

The Apricorn's 3-inch diameter fan is mounted transversely, so it pulls heat directly off the entire underside of the HDD and expels thru vents on either end of the case.

In comparison, the Vantec's internal chassis has a solid metal plate which covers the entire HDD circuit board (see the image I loaded above). The Vantec has no venting, so the heat inside builds up fast. I installed a 500GB HDD in the Apricorn and ran a 220+GB backup from the Vantec. Upon completion hours later, the Apricorn's exterior was completely cool to the touch; the Vantec's exterior was REALLY HOT.

A couple of other things I found superior about the Apricorn:

It's heavier with a wider base, compared to the Vantec's (3" vs. 1.5"). When mounted vertically, you can nudge the Vantec (or the desk it's sitting on) and it will fall over; it happened twice in the few days I used it. There would be major motion required to tip the Apricorn, and I've never toppled it in months of use.

The Apricorn's easy-action pushbutton power switch is conveniently (and sensibly) located on the front of the unit. The Vantec's is on the bottom of the rear panel (see photo above), but it's a stiff toggle-type switch and awkward to operate. You have to hold the Vantec down with one hand firmly in order to get enough leverage to operate the balky switch... and you leave a nice handprint on the case, which then has to be cleaned. Do that a few times and the sexy mirror finish isn't going to look new for very long.

Also, the Vantec's internal PC board HDD cable is mounted off-center on from the socket on any HDD. You have to kink the Vantec's flat cable in order to complete the connection (see photo above). The Apricorn's is located exactly in line with the HDD's connector, and requires no stressing of the cable.

The Apricorn is available here on Amazon, but I found it for less at Page Computers. It is slightly higher in cost than the Vantec, but I'm convinced it is a much better product. Also, with Apricorn's active ventilation and greater physical stability, I have peace of mind about the longevity & safety of the expensive drive mounted inside it.
