Though not the most potent portable computer on the market, Acer's TravelMate C110 Tablet PC is nevertheless one of the most convenient. Incredibly small and lightweight for maximum ease of transport, the combination notebook and tablet TravelMate C110 also offers total input flexibility. Users who prefer traditional data entry may take advantage of the integrated 84-key keyboard with scroll feature and programmable touchpad. Those who prefer "handwriting" via digital ink can utilize the enclosed stylus to freehand sketch their ideas on the system's swiveling flip-open 10.4-inch LCD screen. And for people who'd rather speak than write, the TravelMate C110 also supports voice recognition via its built-in microphone.
But there's far more to like than input versatility in this, one of Acer's most affordable tablets. For starters, at just 10.1 by 8.5 by 1.0 inches and 3.2 pounds (without external drives), the unit is small enough to be carried inside some briefcases. It also features Intel's Centrino technology for improved battery life, remote wireless communication and substantially more efficient CPU usage than non-Centrino systems.
Driving the TravelMate C110 is an Ultra-Low-Voltage 1 GHz Intel Pentium M processor with a stunning 1024 KB Level 2 cache. Acer has matched this midlevel Centrino-based CPU with a minimal alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 2 full GB) and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 3-D video controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) graphics memory. Make no mistake -- the unit is not ready for heavy-duty business multitasking or high-end 3-D animation or games. It is, however, perfect for day-to-day general computing, particularly out-of-the-office field applications where its efficiency, size and wireless design really comes in handy.
The system features today's most desirable connectivity options, including two ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, a single FireWire port for attaching external devices such as digital video cameras, an RJ-45 LAN port for fast network access and Internet interaction, a low-speed 56K modem, and of course an internal 802.11b wireless LAN with internal antenna. Data handling components include an average-sized 40 GB hard disk and a detachable CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can archive data, install applications, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest DVD movies. The unit is also Bluetooth upgradeable.
Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system, Microsoft's Microsoft Reader e-book utility, Acer's Notebook Manager, and several utilities. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3.0 hours in ideal conditions.
