Amazon.com Product Description

Outfitted with a rugged, durable exterior, the Sanyo RL-4930 supports Sprint's Ready Link walkie-talkie feature, which makes it easy to instantly communicate with anyone on a Ready Link capable phone. When you add that to great battery life (up to 5.5 hours), a color screen, a speakerphone and support for PCS vision services, you've got a powerful tool for mobile productivity. It deserves a serious look by those in construction or other rough and tumble industries.

Design
The RL-4930's candybar form factor is beefed up with a rubber Dura-Grip trim for a sure hold and added surface protection. The front of the phone sports a 128 x 112, 65,000-color display. An extendable antenna is located on the top right side of the phone and the rear panel is dominated by a speaker for speakerphone and voice dialing applications. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button above the handset's dial pad. The Ready Link service is operated by a button on the left side of the phone-- walkie-talkie style. A 2.5 mm headset jack is also provided, as is a USB-compatible data connector.

Calling Features
The phone's built-in address book allows you to assign up to 500 entries, each storing 7 numbers, with a total phone book capacity of up to 700 numbers and up to 500 email and web addresses. A separate Ready Link phone book holds up to 200 personal and 200 company-provided contacts. You can customize your caller ID by linking a specific color, a downloaded image, or a photo to a specific phone number in your phone book. Choose from nine multi-chord, melodic ring tones and eight traditional ring tones, including a vibrating alert. The RL-4930's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911 (where available). Perhaps most importantly for users in rural areas, the RL-4930 is a tri-mode phone, meaning it can operate on Sprint's digital PCS network, as well as analog networks that serve many outlying areas.

Hands-free operation of your phone is easy with the built-in speakerphone, and voice recognition allows you to speak the name of anyone in your phonebook for rapid dialing. The RL-4930's Ready Link feature lets you enjoy the convenience of quick, walkie-talkie style communication at the touch of a button with one or several Ready Link users anywhere you go (Sprint PCS Ready Link service charges apply).

Messaging, Internet and Tools
If you need basic messaging capabilities, the RL-4930 has you covered as support is built-in for sending and receiving SMS text messages (Sprint PCS text messaging charges apply). T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built-into the unit-- a plus for text messaging users.

The phone also supports PCS Vision email and instant messaging capabilities. Sprint PCS Vision transforms the wireless experience from something that's simply functional into something visual, entertaining and highly personalized. MSN Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and AOL Instant Messenger are all supported by Sprint's PCS Vision service. PCS Vision mobile Web services let you check out sports scores, get your seven-day forecast, check your flight status, and stay up to date with the latest news. You can also experience full-color graphic versions of popular Web sites.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the RL-4930 including a calendar, a calculator, an alarm clock, and a to-do list and scheduler. A voice recorder lets you record up to 65 minutes of voice memos for later retrieval or download to a PC.

Entertainment
The RL-4930 lets you choose from a variety of pre-set images to customize your display and make it unique to you. With PCS Vision's wireless download service, you can reflect your interests with thousands of pictures of your favorite TV characters, sports teams, celebrities, urban artwork, and more. You can also download games like Tetris and Pac-Man for hours of fun.

Vital Statistics
The Sanyo RL-4930 weighs 4.40 ounces and measures 4.5 x 2.0 x 1.0 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5.5 hours of digital talk time. It runs on the AMPS 850/CDMA 850/CDMA 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great phone, killer design!.......2007-03-23

What I like the most about this phone is the rubber Dura-Grip trim and it's wide screen. The phone looks rugged - for as much as a mobile could possibly look - and the reception, volumes, and easy button pushing make this phone hard to beat.

Cons: the voice recorder buttons are too close to the volume control buttons on the side so you may push them accidentally quite often. It's not as small as some modern phones (but quite smaller than earlier Sanyo 4000 models).

4 out of 5 stars Basically love this phone.......2007-02-05

I basically love this phone it is very durable and I have had not problem with the reception or volume. However, I just started trying to use some of the bells and whistles, such as the voice data recorder and am having a terrible time uploading the recorded data to my computer. I have the right USB and downloaded the software from bitpim.org. Help!

5 out of 5 stars Great phone for the hard of hearing.......2006-11-18

I am hard of hearing and have had a great deal of difficulty finding a phone that meets my needs. This one goes from very soft to very loud. This is the second Sanya cell phone I've had with this same design. This newer model is more rugged than the metal one I owned before. Unlike the newer flip phones, this one is very confortable for long conversations.

5 out of 5 stars Solid value for a phone, as a phone.......2006-10-21

This is actually the first time I felt like reviewing something, but I thought I would share my experiences with this phone. I hate how every time I go to pick out a cell phone, I am told that all the phone have completely equivalent phone performance and that I should pick out a phone based on what features I want. It seems pretty obvious to me that different phones will have different quality microphones, speakers, electronics, etc. My cell phone is my only phone and as such, my requirements for a phone are that it is a GOOD phone. I don't care about a camera, or mp3 player, etc. I have a camera and mp3 player for that. I would rather my money go into a quality phone than lots of gadgets I won't use...

I bought this phone because I had found a sprint online forum where they said this phone was one of the network's top performers for reception. Additionally, I had previously had several other Sanyo phones and liked the organization of the phone book, the overall quality (except for the hinges), etc. Although I would have liked bluetooth and a flip phone, this one seemed much more rugged than the other phones and was actually more comfortable to use when not using a hands free kit. Also, I have broken two Sanyo flip phones at the same place at the hinge, so was getting sick of that.

When I first got home, the first two-three weeks, it would get very staticy and drop calls about 5 minutes into a conversation. It was tremendously frustrating. I took it back to exchange it and was told that they could put a more "regional specific" software on the phone as well as a general software update. I have not had any problems with the phone since then (knock on wood).

With that hopefully fixed, I really enjoy the phone as a high quality basic phone. Unlike another reviewer, I think the clarity of the phone is far superior to my last several phones and think this is almost close to land-line quality.

I do wish that it was bluetooth and I wish I could lock the keypad after making a call... on hands-free, with it in my pocket, it occasionally presses a button and interrupts the conversation (or hangs up if you hit END).

I think I'll enjoy this phone for the next 18 months or so, until they have a bluetooth model...

3 out of 5 stars Earpiece lacks sound quality.......2006-10-12

I love the phone and it has all the features I want, signal reception is above average and talk time on the battery is great. But I just can't get over the poor sound quality of the earpiece. I have turn the volume down to hear the person talking clearly and if there is background noise on the caller's end, forget about it.
Great phone but I had to return it.
