Amazon.com Product Description
Here's a phone from Nextel and Motorola that does everything you expect from a flagship mobile phone. With Bluetooth, a megapixel camera, a music player, a microSD memory card slot, and a whole lot more, the i870 has all the trademark Nextel durability, but adds key refinements that make this a truly advanced phone.
<B>Design</B>
The i870 is no ordinary clamshell. Like other Nextel phones, it's built tough for construction and utilities industry users. The phone sports a very large 176 x 220 TFT color display with a stunning 262,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary color display that can display images, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The built-in camera and LED flash are located above this display, while media control keys for the built-in MP3 player are arranged below the display.
A speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. A small button on the hinge of the phone's flip mechanism automatically opens the phone for quick access-- a real plus if you have your hands full. A standard headset jack is also provided. As mentioned, the i870 sports a slot for a microSD memory card. The card lets you store songs, video, and pictures, and you can easily transfer them to and from your PC with an included SD adapter and USB adapter. A 32MB card is included with the phone.
<B>Calling Features</B>
The i870's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More polyphonic ringtones can be added, as can MP3-based ringtones. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. You can also speak numbers and control other phone features with the sound of your voice. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear and because the i870 is Bluetooth enabled, you can use it with a wide assortment of Bluetooth headsets for hands-free conversations. The i870's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.
One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i870 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America.
With the i870's powerful Direct Talk function you can also communicate in walkie-talkie mode when you're not even connected to the network. The system works anywhere, anytime between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles (range will vary based on terrain and conditions). Direct Talk provides a reliable back-up communications tool in times of emergency, network outage, or when traveling to remote areas not under Nextel coverage such as hiking, cruise vacations or inside buildings.
The i870 also features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.
<B>Messaging, Internet, and Tools</B>
The i870 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text and photo messaging. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i870, as well. Nextel's optional data packages allow you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. The service also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone. With a Nextel Data Unlimited pack, you can get unlimited data transfers from the Nextel network -- great for those times when you want to connect your laptop or PDA to your i870 via Bluetooth and surf the Web or check your email.
Another Nextel innovation supported by the i870 is Nextel Direct Send. Simply push a button and instantly send all your contact info to another Nextel phone. It's an easy way to get people into your contact list fast.
The i870 ships with a calendar and a voice recorder. A time and date clock are also included.
<B>Imaging and Entertainment</B>
The i870's 1.3 megapixel camera features a 4x digital zoom and a built-in flash that makes it easier to get quality shots in low-light situations. The i870 can also capture video clips -- capture length is only limited by the amount of available memory on the memory card. The phone's Media Center application and large internal memory allows you to store hundreds of photos in a variety of file types.
Need some music on the go? The i870's got you covered. A built-in MP3 player lets you listen to tunes on your memory card wherever you please using the speakerphone, or via a pair of stereo headphones (sold separately). Use the included Roxio PC software to create and transfer your MP3 files to the phone.
The i870 is compatible with a number of Java applications available from Nextel. Choose TeleNav for GPS-based audible driving directions or Mobile Locator for finding the location of a friend or loved-one's phone (both require a subscription). You can also take a break or organize your schedule with some included games and applications. More game and application downloads are available from Nextel.
<B>Vital Statistics</B>
The Motorola i870 weighs 4.5 ounces and measures 3.46 x 1.91 x 1.04 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 165 minutes of digital talk time, and up to 70 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the IDEN 800 frequency. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Hello there! I can't help but notice all of the people complaining on battery power issues with the various nextel models and being in the cell phone field for 8 years and Nextel for 5 there is a huge piece of advice I can offer. Never Ever charge any Nextel made in the last 4 years (give or take since they first went to the lithium ion batteries) overnight. The one and only time is a 7-9 hour charge on the initial charge. 4 hours is considered to be the maximum charging time by the manufacture aka Motorola. Most people do not know this until they blow a battery out from overcharging their phone. I work at a service center as a Nextel/sprint technician and I see this daily. It is in the manual and I can't blame people for not reading the novel that comes with the phones, and most customers don't even believe us until it happens to them. Unfortunately it is random as you could charge it overnight for 2 years and never have a problem, or have it happen the 3rd day you have the phone. If you don't believe me contact Motorola, who I speak with often, and they will tell you the same thing. Just trying to help out. I can only help the people in my immediate area, so trying to save at least 1 other person the $50 it costs to replace a battery. Good luck :)

The I-870 from Nextel can be a tricky phone to get working. With that said once you get it working, it does a very good job of being a Phone, Camera, Video and MP3 player, all in one. As a phone it works great, compared to other cellular phones, it's a bit heavy but if your a nextel user your already use to that. As a camera, it is up to par with any other camera phone on the market, better than most models I tried. As a video player, again it's up to par with any other video/phone on the market. As far as the MP3 player goes, the sound is good for a phone/MP3 player but this is not an IPOD. Most reviews I read, users stated they had difficulty getting songs onto the phone. The micro SD card included with the unit can only hold 5 or 6 songs. You will probably want to get a bigger micro card, otherwise why even use the MP3 player. I would suggest a 512mb card that will hold 100 songs or more. Here is how I got my MP3's onto the phone. I tried the included software but got no where when I tried to load more than 10 songs onto my 512MB card and get them to play on the I-870. I did find some easy software that works, "DB Power AMP converter". First you must format the card inside your phone it will be an option in the menu on your phone under the media tab. Once you have downloaded the DB software to your computer, it will ask you to select the songs on disc or on your computer that you want converted. You then select all the songs you want to put onto your phone. Now that you have selected all your songs, you must make sure the file name (Artist and Song name) are no longer than 19 characters total(you will have to rename the tracks or artist titles to make them fit, otherwise they will not show up, or play on your I 870). Now convert them, with the following settings: MP3 Lame -> Bit rate 40KBps -> Frequency 16000 HZ -> output to your micro sd card -> convert. Once this process is complete, then take the micro SD card and put it in your phone, turn on your audio player and let the songs load. At this point your songs will all be on your phone and you will be able to play them. There is one problem here the songs were converted at very low speeds, so the quality sucks. To fix this go back and reformat the card inside your phone, it will erase all your files, which is needed. Now take the card out and put it back into your card reader, open up "DB Power Amp Converter" Take all the songs you previously converted and convert them again, this time use the following settings: MP3 Lame -> Bit rate 96KBps -> Frequency 48000HZ -> output to your micro sd card -> convert. Take the card out and put it into your phone, select audio player, and all your songs will load and play with near CD quality. Don't ask me why you have to rename the files to make them 19 characters or less, and don't ask me why you have to convert all the files at a low quality/frequency load them to your phone, then re convert them at high quality/frequency, because I don't know, but it works. This process was a bit of a hassle for me, especially since I had to try a bunch of things to get this working, you just have to follow these instructions and you'll be up and running. Once I got the songs loaded, I play the audio player all the time, take alot of photos, use the video player, and talk on the phone daily with 0 problems.
On a side note, you may want stero headphones, this phone does support stero playback. The market for stereo headphones that work on cell phones (at this writing)is very small. Most headphones will not fit the smaller socket on cell phones. For example take out a cell phone headset and a pair of headphones, now look at the connectors on each, the headset will be smaller than the headphones. As far as stero headphones you have a few options, there is the motorola blue tooth (no wires) headphones, which I hear are good for $175. There is the motorola stereo push to talk headset for $20, which sound relativly good. And there are a few $10 retrackable headphones that will get the job done. I don't know of any Sure, AKG, or Bose headphones that will work on cell phones. Good Luck!

my experience.......2006-09-12
i've had this phone since febuary and this is my experience:
1. when taking pictures make sure that u clean the lens b/c the pic will be blurry and you can't close the phone 2 take pics.
2. sending pics are good but it may take alot of trouble shooting and complaining in order to recieve pics/text messages from all carriers or any at all
3. the battery is ok at first then it starts 2 drain b/c it doesnt have a powersave mode meaning you cant turn the lights off on the phone/keypad which increases the battery comsumption.
4. one good thing is the push open button but eventually it causes the phone 2 crack
5. converting songs 4 mp3 player is easy and the other accessories as well are pretty easy 2 use esp. if u are a technology person.
6. overall the phone is nice and durable. ive dropped this phone plenty of times and it has no scrathes.cracks or anything so thats a HUGE plus and the main reason i got the phone.
7. if you travel alot u may want 2 have a nother phone w/you b/c when i travel i sometimes dont have a signal 4 hours and that is not safe and the reason why i am switching back the sprint side.
but this is just my experience
i870, big/fat/shuts off for no reason.......2006-08-12
Reception/battery life/etc is typical garbage for a nextel, fair to pathetic at best. Nextel hasn't made a reliable phone since the i90/i95. I've had i90's, i95's, i205's, i730's, i835's, i760's and i870's over the years. Each generation of new phones gets more expensive and less reliable/durable. Latest Series of phones including i760 i870 turn off for no apparent reason both during calls and while idle. Sometimes restarts itself, sometimes not. very frustrating as they hold you hostage to a contract. Similar to each older Nextel model i'm sure if you're lucky you'll get a year of use out of this phone before it begins to fail to the point that you have to re up your contract for 2 years and still pay a ridiculous amount of money for a replacement. save your money and if you have to stick w/nextel buy the cheapest phone they have, doesn't matter how much you pay you'll stick have their crappy service and pathetic tech support
