Amazon.com Product Description
If you're looking for one compact device that can do it all, here's the answer. The Sprint PCS Vision PPC-6700 Smart Device combines a phone with a Windows Mobile 5.0 PDA with all the bells and whistles: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a miniSD card slot, support for EV-DO high speed data, and whole lot more. And don't forget the unique slide-out QWERTY keyboard that makes messaging, note-taking, and other writing tasks a breeze.
The PPC-6700 lets you do things you'd typically need a PC to do, like email, text messaging, instant messaging and web browsing-- all from one integrated device. What's more, the phone's software is designed to sync seamlessly with email, contacts and calendar information on your PC. The PPC-6700 also offers great mobile music and video options, thanks to Windows Media Player 10.
<B>Design</B>
Under the hood, the PPC-6700 features 128MB of RAM and a 416 MHz processor. Up front, the 240 x 320 LCD touch-screen supports 65,000 colors, while the rear of the device houses a 1.3 megapixel camera with video capture capabilities. The design of the PPC-6700 is clean and uncluttered, with just a few buttons for mail, Internet Explorer, and contextual menus. Meanwhile, call answer and end buttons are arrayed below a five-way toggle that allows you to navigate and control the Windows Mobile interface. As mentioned, a full QWERTY keyboard cleverly slides out from underneath the screen. This allows you to hold the device horizontally, and the screen is automatically placed in landscape mode when you're using the keyboard. This "slide-to-hide" form factor eliminates bulkiness for a sleek and stylish design. A mini-SD memory expansion card slot is provided, as is an infrared port and a 2.5 mm headphone jack. A mini-USB port is also included for wired data transfers.
<B>Calling and PDA Features</B>
The PPC-6700's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience. A single main screen summarizes all the important information you need to make it through the day. Here you'll get message notification, upcoming appointments, dialing functions, tasks, and more all in one spot.
As a phone, the PPC-6700 features all the functionality folks expect from a cell phone, including a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones, a vibrate mode, and picture and ringer ID. Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile combines email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes into a single application that seamlessly integrates with the PPC-6700's phone functions. Meanwhile, headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth (the Bluetooth 1.2 specification is supported).
Staying productive on the road is made possible by the Microsoft Office Mobile suite, which includes Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile. Meanwhile, the File Explorer application makes it easy to browse the files on your PPC-6700.
<B>Messaging and Internet</B>
Using Sprint's EV-DO-powered data service, you can surf the Web with the bundled Internet Explorer application, or use MSN messenger to stay in contact via instant messaging. Plus, the inclusion of Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) in the PPC-6700 allows you to surf the Web or check your email at blazing speeds when you're connected to a Wi-Fi network. Robust text messaging functionality is built into the Windows Mobile interface, too.
One of the most important tools bundled with the PPC-6700 is Microsoft ActiveSync, which allows you to quickly synchronize your device's tasks, calendars, email, and contacts with your desktop. You also get Exchange ActiveSync, an application that lets you synchronize data with an Exchange server. Syncing can be done via USB, or wirelessly via Bluetooth or infrared. You can use USB interface to tether the device and offer internet access to your laptop or PC.
The PPC-6700 is also compatible with Sprint PCS Business Connection, which allows you to check your company email, update your work calendar, access your company directory, and more -- all from your phone.
<B>Imaging and Entertainment</B>
Another great feature of the PPC-6700 is that it supports Windows Media playback right out of the box. With Windows Media Player 10, you can play streaming and downloaded video and audio content in a variety of formats, even purchased music from "Plays For Sure" supporting stores. You can also keep your tunes loaded on a memory card and listen to your music wherever you roam.
As mentioned, the PPC-6700 can take 1.3 megapixel (1280x1024) pictures, and while the camera is great for taking stills, it can also function as a camcorder, allowing you to capture video to the unit's memory. An integrated media application organizes your captured photos and videos. For gamers, the phone supports Java-based and Windows Mobile games.
<B>Vital Statistics</B>
The Sprint PCS Vision PPC-6700 Smart Device weighs 6.07 ounces and measures 4.25 x 2.32 x .93 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4.7 hours of digital talk time. It runs on the CDMA 850/CDMA 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Worst Phone I've ever owned.......2007-06-08
I hate this phone. I switched to this phone from a Blackberry. While I like Windows Mobile better, this phone is a disaster. Why?
1. Hard Booting - I have to remove the battery to re-boot this phone a few times daily because it freezes, or stops working in some manner.
2. Reception - It's hard to hear conversations on this phone, the speaker must be poor, and the reception (even though I have the same carrier as my previous phone) is extremely poor. It drops calls constantly.
3. Dialing phone on the road/Stylus - I don't know anyone that can use a stylus to dial a phone # while driving. It is almost impossible to dial a phone # using your fingernail.
Don't buy this phone.
Honest review.......2007-06-08
I was one of the first people to own this phone when it first came out. I was initially happy with the features and extras but quickly realized that it had flaws with the programs. I now have owned this phone for almost a year now and had it replaced five times.
Pros:
Watch movies, play music, full internet browser, sick slide-out keyboard.
Cons:
Bulky, Battery has short time span (extended battery helps but makes it more bulky), resets intermittently, monthly internet service is expensive, phone will lock up whenever it feels like it.
Get the Blackjack or wait and get the iphone.
Only if you are an Uber Geek and dont need anything remotely practical.......2007-05-02
I bought this phone because I am a technology freak and I love the things it had to offer but it is extremely frustrating to use on a daily basis. The bluetooth functionality has got to be the most maddening of all. I have to soft reset my phone every morning because the bluetooth stops functioning correctly sometime during the night and when you try to turn it back on from the comm manager it doesnt work. I also have to hard reset my phone every month or two becuase the phone starts acting up and the only way to fix it is to hard reset and reinstall all my software and remove the freaking sprint adware again.
The only way to make this phone practical in the least is to install the MS voice command software. For $39.99 this is the best Voice Recog. software I have ever seen. You can say "Dial 800 555 1212" as fast as you would to any human and 9 times out of 10 the software will understand every digit and say them back to you. Another advantage of using the software over the included voice dialer is that you dont have to record any names. The software, once installed, immediately knows your whole contact list. Trust me I have over 300 and just being able to say a person's name to call them without hunting through this phone is the only thing keeping me from throwing it out da windah. Another cool feature is the ability to tether my phone to my laptop via IR, Bluetooth or USB and use it like a Merlin internet card. The only draw back there is, of course, the bluetooth problem.
Oh did I mention that in order to connect my PPC to my laptop and sync it I have to plug it in and unplug it like 10 times before it will connect instead of telling me that it didnt recognize the usb device becuase it malfunctioned. Or the fact that my phone randomly wants to install a usb driver for some reason when its not even attached to any thing. Or the fact that if you accidently pop out the storage card and put in back in the phone may see it as a new storage card (storage card2) and any programs you have installed on the card will cease to function unless you hook up the phone to active sync pop out the sd card again and manually delete the storage card folder that remains on the phones directory via the explorer window. Oh and another thing. I had 700 megs of mp3s on the storage card at one point and this nice little fluke erased my entire sd card. I dont put music on the card anymore.
I do use the exchange push feature though that allows you to recieve mail from an exchange server (as long as you have exchange 2003 w/ the microsoft mobile feature or you have to buy a goodlink license for a couple hundred a year). I have my contacts, calendar and tasks all on the exchange server so a sync everyday is not necessary and it does help in the event that i have to hard reset my phone.
Bottom line? If you are not a person with saintly patience DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. Buy the treo or a blackberry.
Poor Phone--DO NOT BUY--.......2007-05-02
This is the worst phone that I have ever purchased. I have had this phone for 6 months and have had to replace it 3 times already. Everytime something goes wrong with the phone, Sprint just gives you a new one.
The phone never shuts off, even though you think it is shut off. By hitting the button on the top to shut it down, it won't.
Try dialing a number or anything using the touch screen and you have to wait a few second.
There is no way to get rid of program icons once you uninstall them.
It is impossible to call someone or text anyone while driving. (I know you not suppose to do it)
The good thing is you can access the internet. But wait, can't you do that already with regular phones?!!
Also, you can not watch tv on these phones either. What's the use for this phone then?
If you have Sprint and they tell you this phone you must purchase a different package, in order to get the internet etc, they are lying to you. Call them and make them switch you back. It's just a bunch of added fees that you do not need as this phone is not compatible.
I wish I never spent the 500.00 on this phone as I could have spent that on a laptop.
As for upgrading to Windows 6 or compatability with Vista--worthless...
The only suitable use for this phone is target practices.......2007-04-03
My employer replaced our entire line of Blackberry's with these, and hilarity most definitely did not ensue. This piece of garbage has so many shortcomings, that I don't know where to start.
First, the touch screen is garbage. Until you discover that you can lock out the screen (not an easy task to even find the feature) this beauty will call all kinds of people and do all sorts of wonderful things without your knowledge. And have you ever tried to dial a number on a touch screen? Its oodles of fun having to bust out the stylus in rush hour traffic to make a call.
There is also this frustrating lag between when a button is pressed and how long until this POS registers it. I hit 5, but the 5 did not show up on the screen yet, should I press it again or wait .... I'll wait a few ... still no 5 .... Press it again .... OH look it registered that 5 and the 5 I pressed 10 seconds ago ..... BEAUTIFULL!! ... backspace .... backspace ..... hmm ..... I pressed backspace but nothing happened .... should I press it again?
Or my personal favorite, hit the touch screen to end a call ... waiting ... waiting ... call not ended ... hit it again .... Oh, there it goes, and since the end call button and start call button are the same key (they change states when in different modes) ... you are now re-dialing the number you just hung up on ... AWESOME!!!!
Considering the cost of this phone, they could have put more than 64mbs of memory in it. You had better hope you don't get too many emails, or it will easily surpass the allotted memory. What's that you say, I can put a mini SD card in it? Well that would be wonderful if the phone gave you any ability to modify memory allocation, like say putting all emails on the SD card, but file and memory management is non existent.
Speaking of which, every time an application is opened, file manager, mobile word, email, IE , etcetera, and you close it, you don't really close it. Pressing the X button usually closes an application, but with this technological marvel no application ever gets shut down unless you MANUALLY go into the memory manager and shut down the application; kind of like having to hit ctr alt del and going into task manager every time you wanted to close out an application.
I purchased the extended batter and still do not get more then 2.5 hours of talk time out of the phone, and its even worse where coverage is problem.
And don't even think about going to a Verizon store for help, Verizon stores don't do tech support on PDA's, even though they sell them. You have to call an 800 number and wait on hold an hour to get tech support for the phone.
In short, by a Blackberry.
