Sitting at the head of the class within Toshiba's entry-level business notebook lineup, the Satellite A45-S2501 offers powerful multimedia options at an affordable price. An appealing notebook for small business owners, it features Windows XP Professional, a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB installed RAM, and a 15-inch TFT display. It also offers a DVD writer, FireWire port (for connecting digital video cameras), and 54g built-in wireless LAN.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: Though not world-beating in size, the 60 GB enhanced-IDE hard drive (4200 RPM) offers more than enough storage capacity for road warriors.
- Processor: The 2.8 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor offers enough speed for your work today and into tomorrow. Thanks to its Mobile features, the processor can save power when its not needed, thus conserving battery life. It also has a 512 KB L2 cache and a 533 MHz FSB (front-side bus).
- Memory: The A45-S2501 comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (2 x 256 MB DDR SDRAM, 266 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB (2 x 512 MB). It has two slots that can be expanded to 2 GB (2048 MB).
- CD/DVD Drive: It comes equipped with a DVD+-R/+-RW drive that writes both DVD and CD discs. For DVD-RW discs, it has a 4x write/2x rewrite/2x read speed, while for DVD+RW discs it has a 4x write/2.4x rewrite/2.4x read speed. For CDs, it has a 16x write/10x rewrite/24x read speed.
- Keyboard & Mouse: The A45-S2501 has an 85-key keyboard with 12 function keys and a two-button touchpad.
Sound and Graphics
It features an integrated Intel 852GME graphics controller with 32 MB of shared video memory. The 15-inch TFT active matrix display has a native resolution of 1024 x 768 and supports up to 16 million colors. The integrated audio card provides good sound while keeping the cost of this package down; the A45-S2501 has two internal speakers. Connectivity and Expansion Slots

The A45-S2501 comes with the Windows XP Professional operating system (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features), and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Norton Antivirus 2003 (with 90 days of complimentary live updates), Quicken New User Edition 2004, and ArcSoft ShowBiz DVD 1.3, InterVideo Win-DVD Creator 2.

Definitely not the smallest on the block, the A45-S2501 notebook measures 13.2 x 11.7 x 1.9 inches (L x W x H) and weighs a comfortable 7.7 pounds.

The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery has 12 cells (which refers to the number of charge-storing components within the battery) and offers a standard amount of power for a notebook PC (around 2.9 hours of typical use).

Never another Seagate.......2007-05-23
I bought this drive because I needed the disc space for video editing. It worked fine for a couple of months then windows explorer kept locking up my computer while trying to access the drive. Seagate was zero help at all. Their suggestion was to reformat and start over. So I backed all my data and reformatted. 2 months later it is locking my computer up again. I have two WD external drives and they work great. If I unplug the Seagate then I have no problems. I will be buying a large internal to replace it.
Great drive, lousey software........2007-05-22
I purchased this to backup my notebook computer (my primary computer) after a harddrive failure. I didn't want an annoyingly loud drive because I wanted it to stay on for automatic backups. I was a little worried about heat since it has no built-in fan, but it seems to run very cool and best of all, it's very quiet. It's nice having firewire also since that frees up one more USB port. It also goes to sleep when not being used and wakes up automatically when addressed. I'm very pleased with the drive so far.
The Bounceback software on the other hand should go right in the trash. I gave it four stars because of this. It caused Win XP Pro to continuously freeze up whenever I opened Explorer (my computer) or tried to plug in another USB device or memory card (like my camera or thumb drive). I had to quickly uninstall it.
I have since found a free download call Cobian Backup which I am very satisfied with.

I have the Seagate 400GB drive and needed more space so I purchased the 750GB. Both Seagate External Hard Drives work great. They are extremely quiet and I have absolutely no problems with them.

Just finished connecting the Seagate 750Gb drive to my system. I had my doubts, but it is working fine with my network. It is connected via USB hub into the USB port on an Apple AirPort Base Station. The Seagate drive is recognized and functioning in a Windows XP and a Mac OS. I also have a USB printer connected to the same USB hub and there aren't any conflicts with the hard drive.
