Smart watch grown up.......2007-06-08

I bought this to replace two Swatch Black Paparazzi Smart Watch #SUHB100, the first one of which had a screen problem, and the second had its antenna broken when I was trying to clean the watch band. This product improves on the Paparazzi in all respects.

It is more solidly constructed, made of metal instead of plastic and rubber. It's heavier for it, but the build quality is worth it. The screen is less prone to scratching, and is easier to put a screen protector onto due to the crystal bezel being above the rest of the watch, and the Paparazzi's screen being below, and an odd shape to boot. The memory is doubled from the rest of the line, and the charger for this watch is much safer and less liable to damage watch or charger if removed accidentally. The band length is easily adjusted by flipping a tab and removing a pin. The antenna prevents the metal band from catching on arm hairs and is easily uncoupled from half the band. The screen is sharp and the backlight is plenty bright, maybe even too bright. The built-in watch faces are a disappointment, but there are plenty of downloadable faces from MSN Direct that keep it from being a problem. Signal reception is sufficient, and a gold contact between the two halves of the antenna seem to help the watch receive a signal.

The band appears to be easily scuffed, showing a few marks after having worn it about a month. It comes with one recharging cable that is powered either off USB or the included wall-to-USB adapter. I have not yet been able to find how to order another cable, to keep one at work and one at home. Battery life is about three days on an overnight charge, so I can get away with the one, but I'd like to get another for convenience's sake.

This watch looks and feels more like a watch, and less like a toy than the Paparazzi. It's more solid, more conventional, and more at-home in an adult situation.

I bought this watch for my husband for Christmas. I was very impressed with the quality. Last year I bought a Polar watch and spent over $400 and it doesnt even compare. So far the information has been very accurate from the weather all the way to the news. I would highly recommend this watch.

Bottom line: It finally works, and it's a gorgeous watch.

Microsoft's SPOT technology project began in 2004 with the launch of a few different watch models. While only some could tolerate the appearance of the watches, many more experienced hardware difficulties with the watches. Microsoft continued the product, offering extensive customer support and trade-ins to all those who experienced any ongoing problems with their watches. In 2005, Microsoft remained quiet, and there was continued speculation that the entire MSN Direct/SPOT Watch project was going to be scrapped. In early 2006 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), those rumors were laid to rest when brand new Fossil/Abacus prototype watches were shown by Microsoft to attendees.

This watch - and the variant models of it - is the final product, and it is simply awesome. Offering all of the content available to the past watches, the new designs finally are no longer "geeky" and look like a gorgeous watch from the Fossil Blue series. Every technical issue has been addressed; this is almost a completely new product while remaining true to the original idea behind MSN Direct. If you are in the market for a new watch, I highly recommend this watch.

After 5 years with a Fossil Blue watch (and a 6 month in-between experiment with the MSN Direct-Abacus AU4000), I found this as a worthy replacement. I can honestly say this watch is worth every dollar you spend on it, it looks great and provides you with all the customized content you choose from msndirect.com. To make things even better, this watch can hold double the content as the previous models (and they held quite a bit) and has even better connection reception to the Microsoft FM radio frequencies it is constantly downloading information from.

Hats off to Microsoft and Fossil/Abacus for not scrapping the great idea of SPOT technology and finally delivering us a highly functional AND gorgeous watch! A+
