The Acer Aspire 1700 certainly isn't the lightest, most compact notebook PC around, but it's chock-full of productivity features that will appeal to power users who don't need to travel everywhere with their laptop. With its extra-large 17-inch display, it's a great choice for a desktop replacement PC. It also features built-in 54g (802.11g) wireless connectivity, a spacious 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, a fast 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor, and a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive.

The Basics

Hard Drive: The spacious 80 GB hard drive offers more than enough storage for both your work and home files as well as a multimedia library.
Processor: The 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor will come in handy for tasks such as digital photo or video editing.
Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB (2 x 512 MB).
CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with a combo drive that is capable of reading and writing of both DVDs and CDs. It uses the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 109-key key keyboard with 6 launch keys (1 for power button, 1 for wireless on/off switch, 1 for Internet browser, 1 for e-mail, 2 programmable buttons) and a touchpad with 4-way scroll button.

Sound and Graphics
The Acer Aspire 1700 comes with a crisp and bright 17-inch TFT display (1280 x 1024 native resolution) that delivers the screen space and performance previously found only in desktop computer systems, providing a very wide viewing area for complex worksheets and multimedia presentations. Video is powered by an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 card with 64 MB of video RAM. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This Aspire 1700 model has an integrated 802.11g (or 54g) wireless LAN, which is quickly becoming the most popular wireless standard and is compatible with 802.11b connections as well. You get an excellent range of external connections, including:

4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 S-Video for connection to a TV

1 PS/2 port for connecting an external mouse or keyboard

It also offers and integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The Aspire 1700 comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Other preloaded software includes Norton AntiVirus 2003, Adobe Acrobat Reader, CyberLink PowerDVD, and NTI CD Maker 6.

Dimensions and Weight
At 15.7 pounds and 12.6 x 14.9 x 2.2 inches (L x W x H), the Aspire 1700 is portable, but you won't want to take it with you everywhere. It's best used as a desktop replacement PC.

It's powered by a 12-cell lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack with an average battery life of 1.5 hours.
