Amazon.com Product Description
Extremely thin (10.6 by 9.6 by 1.2 inches) and very lightweight (a mere 4.3 pounds), Averatec's 3150 series of mobile computers are some of the smallest standard notebooks on the market. Though not exactly a power user's dream rig, this model, the Averatec 3150HW, is a smart option for those who require excellent portability and a fiscally sensible price point.

Powered by a trio of cost-effective components -- a 1.4 GHz AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ processor (with PowerNow and QuantiSpeed technologies for improved battery life and faster data movement than previous AMD processors), 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory (double that of the marginally less expensive Averatec 3150P), and an integrated S3 ProSavage8 graphics controller with 32 MB of shared video memory, the Averatec 3150HW delivers midlevel computing prowess. Users can expect solid performance for standard 2-D tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, Internet surfing, contact management, and basic drawing. However, sophisticated business applications and complex multitasking will likely tax the system's capabilities. Furthermore, the unit's graphics engine will not effectively handle mid- to high-end 3-D gaming or animation.

The Averatec 3150HW features an adequate 30 GB hard disk on which to store your important data, and a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive data and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not supported. You'll monitor your activities on a 12.1-inch XGA TFT display capable of sharp 1024 by 7678 resolutions, and listen to your tunes via built-in stereo speakers.

For such a small and affordable notebook, the Averatec 3150HW is very well connected. Communication options include integrated 10/100 Mbit LAN for fast networking and Internet access, a 56K modem for slower dial-up environments and 802.11b wireless for those times when you can't plug in. Other important amenities include three fast USB 2.0 ports for data streaming with external devices such as scanners and digital cameras, a Type II PC Card CardBus slot, and an 85-key full-sized keyboard. An IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for swapping data with digital camcorders) is not included.

Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition heads up the preinstalled software bundle, which also features Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity package and a DVD playback utility. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3-plus hours with the enclosed Smart Li-ion cell.

Amazon.com Product Description

With support for multimedia messaging and mobile instant messaging, this sleek companion will keep you in touch with the latest cell phone technologies. It's also got a vibrant color screen and a speakerphone for talking hands-free. If you're a T-Mobile subscriber, this is a great way to take advantage of all that your service has to offer.

<B>Design</B>
The t209 sports a slim, sleek clamshell design with a large 128 x 160 color display with 65,000 colors. A supplementary, 96 x 64 monochrome OLED screen on the front of the cover keeps you up to speed on time, date, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. There's also a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets, while the phone's charging port is placed on the bottom of the unit. And because the t209's antenna is housed inside the phone, there's nothing to snag or break off.

<B>Calling Features</B>
With a big 500-contact address book, the t209 is designed to hold all of your important calling information. The phone also features 40-chord polyphonic ringtones, and in addition to the built-in ringers you can download additional ones from T-Mobile's t-zones service. A vibrate alert silently notifies you of incoming calls when you want to be discreet, and a handy speakerphone lets you talk handsfree or hold conference calls. Meanwhile, ringer and picture ID lets you assign photos and ringtones to callers. Like all T-Mobile phones, the t209 also supports voicemail, caller ID, conference calling, call forwarding, call waiting, call hold, built-in paging, and access to T-Mobile's 411 service.

<B>Messaging, Internet, and Tools</B>
Powerful messaging and Internet capabilities are built into the t209. Support is provided for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via MMS messages. Instant messaging is also supported via the AIM and Yahoo! messaging clients (T-Mobile messaging charges apply), and there's also a built-in web browser for t-zones downloads and mobile web browsing. T-Mobile's t-zones service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the t209 including a calculator with a unit converter, an alarm, a voice memo recorder, a to-do list, and a calendar.

<B>Entertainment</B>
The t209 allows you to set screensavers, themes and wallpapers to suit your tastes. The phone is Java enabled, meaning it supports games written on the Java platform. The unit ships with several games and more are available via the t-zones service.

<B>Vital Statistics</B>
The Samsung SGH-t209 weighs 3.3 ounces and measures 3.5 x 1.9 x 1 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 8 days of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars the phone is just fine.......2006-08-10

The guy who complains about poor reception is probably having problems with t-mobile more than the phone itself. I recently moved to a new city and the reception with this phone (and t-mobile prepaid) is impeccable. But in the city where I purchased the phone it was dismal.

The phone is great. It is light and small without feeling cheap. The number pad is pleasing to the touch. The display is great, the sound quality is very good, the battery decent (could be better, granted). The menus are intuitive. I've really enjoyed it. Only criticism: the exterior LCD goes very dim while in hybernation and the only way to activate it (to see the time, reception, etc.) is by opening the phone. That's a little annoying.

2 out of 5 stars A basic phone,but ok to have.......2006-08-01

I've had my phone for 5 days and I hate it.At first I thought it was a cool phone to have but I was wrong.Actually i got the phone for free with a new activation.I know that Samsung has good products, but not this one. The Samsung T209 has poor reception,it does not ring loud enough, and the battery seems to go down real fast. The 2 things that I do like about the phone is that it has an external caller id and a color screen.I would not advise anyone to purchase this phone. The phone that Im looking into now is the samsung T509, the thinnest phone ever.I heard its a good phone and has the best reception also clear calls, but well see.

3 out of 5 stars Basic low end phone. Few features, little excitement, but decently reliable.......2006-07-19

Samsung has a fairly reliable history as far as the quality and features of their GSM mobile phones go. I used to sell GSM phones B2B for a national GSM carrier, and I sold more Samsungs than anything else, including Motorola. Motorola people generally bought because of the design or some gadget feature. Samsung was bought because it offers a more reliable phone with better features, and a better price. Samsung has made great strides in its design process in recent years, and has once again delivered a decent lowend phone that offers a good value for the little amount of money it costs.

The T209 is essentially a featureless version of the T309. The screen is nice but nothing spectacular. There is no MP3 player or intergrated camera, and this is essentially the type of phone companies offer for free for new buyers. There is a speakerphone which is nice. Phone reception is average due to an internal wraparound antenna, but sufficient for every day use. If you live in a rural area reception may be somewhat spotty, so test the phone for a few days if you can. The phone is tri-band GSM on 850/1800/1900 mhz.

Before final purchase though, I would recommend going to a store and testing one of their live demo phones with your SIM, menu functionality is easy for Samsung fans but can be difficult at first for Moto users. Plus you'll get a good sense for how well the phone fits your hand, your dialing fingers, and how it places against your ear, and what kind of reception you might get before you plunk down your hard earned money. If you are looking for free and basic value and only need to make phone calls and not play music or take pictures, this phone is fine. Better value phones include the Samsung T309 and T509 and the Motorola V360.
