Amazon.com Product Description
Get everything you're looking for in a large-screen notebook PC without breaking the bank with the Averatec AV6130H1-01, perfect for everyone from college students and families to small business owners. The affordable AV6130H1-01 offers a 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 40 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. It also features a 15.4-inch screen, strong video/graphics card with 64 MB of video RAM, multi-format memory card reader, and 54g wi-fi networking.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 40 GB IDE hard drive is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors--but not enough for much multimedia storage.
- Processor: The 3.0 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 is a powerful processor that was designed to be used with notebooks used as a desktop replacement PC. It has a front-side bus (FSB) of 533 MHz and a 1 MB L2 cache.
- Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, 333 MHz, DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB (2 x 512 MB).
- CD/DVD Drive: The combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive can write and read CDs at 24x and rewrite at 10x speeds. It can read DVDs at 8x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: The AV6130H1-01 features an 85-key keyboard that offers the functionality of a full-sized 101-key keyboard and a two-button touchpad pointing device.
Sound and Graphics
This AV6130H1-01 notebook has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 video/graphics card with 64 MB of video RAM, which offers relatively strong 3D graphics rendering. The 15.4-inch TFT active matrix screen has a native 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. It also includes an integrated audio card that's compatible with Sound Blaster Pro audio and internal stereo speakers. Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The AV6130H1-01 has an integrated wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b and the faster 802.11g networks. You get a decent offering of external connectivity options, including both USB 2.0 and Firewire:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video out
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, 32-bit)
- Multi-format memory card reader compatible with Memory Stick, Secure Digital, and MultiMedia cards
- 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). Preloaded System and Software
This notebook comes with the Windows XP Home Edition, and it features Microsoft Works 7.0 (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents) and PowerDVD.
Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 1.4 x 14.1 x 10.6 inches (H x W x D) and weighing 7.7 pounds, the AV6130H1-01 is bit larger than other notebooks in its range. It's best used as a desktop replacement while offering portability when you need it. Power
The rechargeable lithium-ion battery has an average battery life of 3 hours.
What's in the Box
This package contains the AV6130H1-01 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limiited hardware warranty and 6 months warranty for the battery.

Amazon.com Hands-On Review

To keep your smartphone's applications up to date, and to optimize the performance of your device, you may need to perform firmware and/or software updates just as you would on your PC. To learn more about updates for your device, please visit Palm's support site. Note that by clicking this link you will be leaving Amazon.com.
The Treo name has been synonymous with QWERTY keyboard equipped smartphones for years - and with good reason. The devices have long been packed full of the features that power users require, while still fitting in the palm of your hand. The new Treo 700p from Palm is no exception. Based heavily of the massively popular Treo 650, the 700p gets a few upgrades where they really count while not messing too much with the rest of the Treo recipe for success. The main upgrades are a 1.3 megapixel camera, twice as much built-in memory, and EV-DO 3G data connectivity.

A palm tree on your Palm, in your palm.

But first, the physical design of the 6.2oz Treo 700p. The Treo has long had one of the best built-in keyboards on the market, and that is still true today. The QWERTY keyboard's keys are made of a hard plastic, but still have a good feel. The 700p's keys get a new square shape, and has had its direction-pad controller and hardware buttons reworked a bit: the green and red call keys are now located directly under the display, where the home and menu keys used to reside on the Treo 650. The 700p's menu key is now on the bottom row of the keyboard, a somewhat questionable position for a key that is so important to the Palm OS.

Speaking of the Palm OS, the version used in the 700p is virtually unchanged from that found in the Treo 650. As such, the user interface appears a bit dated, even though it is being shown on a very capable 320x320 pixel, 65k color touch screen. The stylus that is to be used on the display is stored in the back of the 700p and has a very nice heft to it, making it nearly as comfortable to use as a regular pen. Thanks to some clever work on the UI, though, there are relatively few instances where you truly need to use it.

In spite of the Treo 700p's somewhat dated OS, it is still a very capable and amazingly popular system when it comes to 3rd party application support. In fact, the Treo 700p ships with a number of 3rd party apps to make up for missing pieces in the OS, such as music playback. Due to the popularity of the Palm OS over the years, if there is an application that can be written for a mobile device, chances are good that it has already been written for the Palm platform.

The 700p features one of the best keyboards on the market.

Now that the 700p has over twice the available built-in storage as the 650 (and still has an SD card slot for even more), you should be able to load it up with all sorts of programs, games, and media files without problem.

The Treo's default PIM type applications like the Calendar and Contacts manager are all very good. Through the use of the included HotSync application, information from your desktop PC can easily be synchronized with the applications on your Treo. Another bonus from the use of HotSync is the automatic backup it provides. If your Treo ever gets lost or ceases to function, you can easily restore your existing HotSync backup to a new device with an absolute minimum of effort and be back in business in no time at all.

If you are an existing Treo 650 user, the biggest reason to consider an upgrade is the new 3G EV-DO data support. When used in an EV-DO coverage area, the Treo 700p will scream along at speeds many people would only expect to get at home with their DSL service. The 700p lacks WiFi support, but for those that live and work in EV-DO coverage areas, that won't be an issue at all.

Treo 700P is a piece of crap. It doesn't even deserve 1 star........2007-05-09
I'm not even going into any of the positive features of this phone as it doesn't matter when you can't use them because...
1)your phone freezes all the time (and you don't even know it's frozen until you go to use it and then you realize you've missed 10 calls or your alarm didn't go off, etc.)
2)your phone needs to be rebooted (sometimes several times a day)
3)your phone loses everything! (this has happened twice in the 9 months I've owned this phone)
This is the most defective product I've ever purchased. Despite having spent nearly $400 on this phone/pda only 9 months ago, I'm already replacing it - it's just too frustrating.
Do yourself a favor, avoid this phone!
Bloody Awful.......2007-05-06
The worst mobile phone I have ever owned in 13 years. It regularly freezes, locks up, or just doesn't respond to touchscreen input regularly. While making calls, touchscreen input is slow, often delayed. For example, I will start a call, touch the speakerphone button, then have to wait several seconds until the speakerphone starts. The same lag applies to the mute button and switching from touchscreen to keypad.
The built-in keyboard was poorly designed. The keys are rounded -- meaning pressing keys with the stylus isn't an option. Those with chubby fingers will absolutely hate this phone.
I bought this awful phone for data sync with my home computer. Discovered after the fact that Mac software is buggy and doesn't work well over Bluetooth.
When the phone loses signal, it will shut off phone capabilities and quit searching for a signal. While that might be good for battery life, the phone doesn't alert the user to the loss of signal.
I'm trading up or out of this terrible phone just as soon as my contract allows. I've been kicking myself in the rear for giving up a blackberry for a palm. Worst mobile phone of my life.
PS - the one decent feature of the phone is the built-in camera. Palm managed to much that up though. When snapping pictures, Palm forces the user to either save or delete each picture immediately after it is taken. People who need to snap several quick pictures have to take the picture, look at the touch screen, touch the save/delete button, aim the camera again, and take the next picture.
Just bloody awful.
do not buy - wait for the iphone........2007-04-28
I use this phone with macintosh OSX and use verizon. the 3 other people I know who have this phone all have the same problem I have. the phone constantly freezes up and is unreliable. too many times I've been waiting for a call to realize it has been frozen and needs to be rebooted. I'm waiting for the apple iphone.
Palm is knowingly selling customers a defective phone........2007-04-06
DO NOT buy this phone if you ever plan to use Bluetooth. It has been well documented on various Palm and Treo websites -- and admitted by Michael Moskowitz, general manager and vice president at Palm -- that the Bluetooth software on the 700p is defective. In a public letter, Mr. Moskowitz promises that there will be a firmware update released in the first half of 2007 that he HOPES will fix the problem, but Palm is making no promises.
In the meantime, Palm and Verizon continue to sell a phone that they know is defective. Better that than loose money by taking the phone off the market until it is fixed, right? WRONG!
If it weren't for the freezing/ lockups/ resets.......2007-03-29
I am a technophile. Love my toys. I'm not the true techie type, bot a "power end-user." I can figure out most problems, and love to tweak. This problem on the 700p is an unacceptable problem. I have to say, I regret the purchase of this phone. While the simplicity of the Palm platform is great, and the software is abundant, the resets, freezes and lockups just absolutely kill me. And it's true that Verizon and Palm deny the problem. I found some helpful hints on the Web, but no fixes. I wish I had waited. I rely on text messaging as a dispatching tool, and I fear missing a call-out because the phone is frozen and I don't know it.
Good things: versatility, Palm simplicity, form factor, abundant software, fairly good memory, fairly good keyboard, great screen, NOT Windows
Bad things: freezing, lockups, resets, freezing, lockups, resets, freezing, lockups, resets, freezing, lockups, resets. And hard-to-get-to reset button. Which you need because of freezing, lockups, resets.
