Amazon.com Product Description

Replace your desktop PC with the Toshiba Satellite P105-S9312 laptop, featuring all the power and hard drive space you expect from a top-of-the-line desktop but in an easily mobile package. It's powered by Intel's new, groundbreaking processor--the powerful Core Duo T2500--which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and a more efficient power consumption. One of the strongest processors on the market today (as of June 2006), the dual execution core T2500 has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, 2 MB L2 cache, and lightning quick 667 MHz system bus.

The 200 GB hard drive offers comfortable storage space for all your work as well as a large digital multimedia library. You'll enjoy fantastic DVD playback and immersive graphics thanks to the 17-inch TruBrite display and top-of-the-line NVidia GeForce Go 7900 graphics card with an amazing 256 MB of dedicated video RAM. It's also great for using as a media center, with Toshiba's unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. It comes with a DVI-D video output, enabling you to connect to a high-definition TV, and built-in Harman Kardon speakers that can produce enveloping virtual surround sound. Other features include 2 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode 802.11a/b/g wi-fi connectivity, Bluetooth wireless capability, multi-format memory card reader, and Windows XP Professional operating system.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: You'll be able to store large libraries of digital audio, video, and photos on the 200 GB hard drive (5400 RPM)--one of the largest hard drive capacities you'll find currently in multimedia notebooks (June 2006). This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
• Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2500 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3D and 2D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.

• Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (PC5300, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) is an excellent start for power users, and it offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 4 GB to handle immersive 3D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
• CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 4x for both DVD+RW/-RW, 8x for both DVD+R/-R, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

With Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, you can won't have to wait for Windows to boot up before you can start a DVD movie or CD. Just a simple press of the button bypasses the system and starts your media playing.

• Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The P105-S9312 has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the NVidia GeForce Go 7900 graphics/video card, which includes 256 MB of dedicated video RAM for uninterrupted, immersive 3D gaming. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications.

You'll enjoy crisp sound via the built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers, which can produce immersive SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound with SRS WOW sound enhancement. This notebook also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This notebook has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). And with the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs.

It includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (in addition to a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

• 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
• 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
• 1 VGA monitor port
• 1 S-Video out
• 1 DVI-D video port (for connecting to flat panel, high-definition monitors and televisions)
• 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
• 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
• 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
• 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee AntiVirus, InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, and Sonic Solutions RecordNow.

Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 15.5 x 10.8 x 1.65 inches and weighs 7.1 pounds.

Power
It's powered by a 9-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery (6000 mAh), which has a battery life of up to 3 hours (depending on usage). It has a recharge time of approximately 4 hours.

What's in the Box
This package contains the P105-S9312 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Computer.......2007-05-09

I'm not sure why this was only rated 1-Star, but this is a very good computer. I do have to agree that the small right-side shift key can be annoying. That is about the only bad thing about the computer. The screen is ample size, it has a large HDD for a laptop. When playing graphic intensive games or video encoding it can become quite hot. So I recommend a cooler with this one. I have a desktop computer with two Nvidia 6600GT's in SLI and this computer can perform as good or slightly better than the desktop.

It is not small, so I dont' suggest it if you will be lugging it around a lot. I use it a lot for programming too. That why I love the keyboard with number pad combination. I have never had a problem with it locking up or the fingerprint reader not working. It has four USB 2.0 ports on it that are placed far enough apart to accomadate larger USB Drives simultaneously. Do not expect a long battery life when playing games. It will probably only last 45 minutes. It will last long enough to watch a full length movie. I have had this computer for 8 months now. I would definately recommend this to any gamer or business man alike. It get's the job done!

5 out of 5 stars My Baby.......2007-01-26

This is an awesome rig. It has plenty of power and loves to play games. I love the Nvidia see through windows. Fingerprint reader and hard drive space make it a no brainer. I can't wait for my vista upgrade! Toshiba is a great company in respect to reliable laptops.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrible Product.......2006-11-06

I could not be more displeased with this laptop.

The form factor of the keyboard is terrible. I could not tell this from the information on the web. The right hand shift key is the size of a standard key, instead of the double size like most laptops, so trying to hit it fast while typing sometimes results in hitting the "UP ARROW" key during typing, which then slows things down quite a bit to fix it. The "PERIOD" and "QUESTION MARK" key is HALF THE SIZE of the standard keys which means you can easily miss them and have to fumble to fix the situation. Why Toshiba would make such critical keys so small is unimaginable to me. They have a full size numberic keypad that will likely never be used, while keys like the return and period that will be used constantly they have made impractical.

Several things were wrong with the computer right out of the box. One of the first things I did was look at some pictures. The application locked up after viewing maybe 5 pictures. What I have since found is that all the computer applications lock up at some point during use and you have to either wait maybe 2 to 3 minutes for them to unfreeze, or you can open another window of the same application and then the first one unfreezes. It's very strange and happens across the board.

The next thing that happened is the fingerprint reader stopped working. After I downloaded updates it started working again, but only functions properly about 50% of the time, and the rest of the time I need to use my password, so I can never count on it.

The next thing is that the touch pad functions irregularly. Sometimes it will close the application I am working on, other times it won't scoll and almost never does it work properly for volume control. It's very problematic.

Lately the computer has crashed with a blue screen several time for seemingly no reason. Not during intense activity, or network access.

Also every time it is booted up I get an error message about the DVD/CD player. It wants me to switch to DVD, despite the fact that I use the CD player much more. I have to tell it every time not to switch. It's very annoying.

Oh, and the master volume control is a cheap plasic rotatable knob on the front, much like they use to put on 1950's radios! What were they thinking!?

There are more problems, but I don't feel like typing them all, but those alone should be enough for you to stay away from this computer. It is so bad that I don't use it much, I am still using my 5 year old laptop with a screen that has to be tilted just right to work. I wish I could just get rid of it, but that isn't possible. I wish I had bought another Gateway, or anything else for that matter.

I have owned this for about 3 or 4 months now, and I just don't think I will ever be happy with it. I know on paper it looks like good performance for the money, but believe me, it isn't! Do yourself a favor and look at anything else!
